Hi Kel, OK so over the weekend I only had time to do a clean install of WXP Pro from the original media. That means no SPs, hotfixes, or nLite. Then when I tried WPI it worked perfectly. I have used this PC before for some 'experimentation', maybe I inadvertently broke something. Sorry about the brain cramp...just happens sometimes. Regards, Mike

Hi Kel, Okay, what do you think about this; I will reinstall WXP Pro from the original media, and then SP2 and SP2 update. Then with a fresh OS, it should work. Then I will reinstall WXP from my nLited CD. I have used this CD numerous times before without any issues. Then see if there is any problem with WPI. This will tell me if the problem is specific to the PC in question when setup with nLite, as opposed to with original media. Regards, Mike

Hi Kel, I just doublechecked the USB key with my main PC, and it works, both in the Windows 2000 OS and the Windows XP virtual machine. I think that maybe I will rerun my nlited WXP UI CD on the machine in question, and start with a clean machine. Regards, Mike

Hi Kel, As I stated before, I have used this USB key before to test installs with a VM. WPI is started with an Autorun.inf that simply calls WPI.HTA. But even if I manually run WPI.HTA I get the same error mesage. However I am running it with a custom config file, config001.js, if I remember correctly. But this has caused me no problems in the past. regards, Mike

Hi Kel, ok here is my user options.js file Thanx for the quick response. Regards, Mike useroptions.js

Hi Kel, I have used this exact setup to test in a virtual environment on a different machine. So I have no permission issues as far as I know, and I didn't modify any files. I wonder if there is a version issue, however. I think that I am using WPI 6.2. As I stated earlier, the PC in question has IE v6.0.2900.2180 with SP2, I believe, and Windows XP Pro with SP2, but not SP2 Update, installed. Thanks for the quick response. Regards, Mike

Hi All, I have been using WPI for quite a while now to do unattended installs, and along the way have had to do some troubleshooting on various things. But this one has me stumped. I copied my WPI folder to a USB key, and plugged it into a PC with Windows XP SP2, .NET Framework 2, and IE v6.0.2900.2180 on it. When I launch WPI.hta I get the following message: "This useroptions.js file is not a v5.0 compatible file. Delete the file and start WPI again". When I delete the file I get the same message again. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for a great forum and great software. Regards, Mike

Install problem with MS Publisher
mikep56 replied to mikep56's topic in Windows Post-Install Wizard (WPI)
Hi Kelsenellenelvian, How do I go about listing the commandline section? Thanks and Happy Holidays. Mike -
Season's Greetings to all, Hi everyone. I have a problem with MS Publisher. When I go to install it in my VM, I get an error message about not being able to run the external program pub.msi. Do I need to have a copy of msiexec.exe included somewhere, or am I missing something? Mike

Hi kumarkumar, I had a similar problem with a new build a few months ago. I had a SATA HD, a SATA optical drive, and a multiple card reader device, which is USB. With all the hardware connected and running an nLite Windows XP installation, the USB devices were enumerated first as drives C:-I:, then the SATA HD was enumerated as J:, and the optical drive was K:. To get Windows XP to install on the HD and have the HD enumerated as C:, all I needed to do was disconnect the multiple card reader device from the USB port and re-install Windows XP. WXP installed on the properly enumerated HD, and the optical drive became D:. After reinstalling WXP I reconnected the card reader and all is now good, with the card readers becoming devices E:-K:. So, to make a long story short (oops I guess it's too late for that now), disconnect the PATA HD, reinstall WXP, and then reconnect the PATA drive. You should be good to go. Hope this helps. Regards, Mike

Hi Zorphnog, I believe that I tried setting the attribute before copying it into the VM environment that I use for testing, and it didn't work. But now you've given me an idea...what about undoing the read only attribute, selecting W95 comp mode, then resetting the read only attribute? I will try this out and report back, probably not till over the weekend. Hi Bledd, The setup.exe file won't run on any w32s system. But once it is installed, it runs with no problem. Thanks for the quick responses. Mike

Hi All, I have a great older game called Tritryst. It is similar to Tetris, but it is different. I want to install this silently, but upon clicking on the setup.exe file, a message box pops up telling me that it will not run in win32s mode. So I needed to right click on the setup.exe file and go to properties, and select Windows 95 Compatibility mode. Then the program installs and runs fine. How do I go about doing this with WPI? I tried an idea in AutoIt. Creating a target directory and copying all of the setup files to the target directory, but then I couldn't figure out how to automate navigating to a folder and right clicking on a file. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Mike

WPI on DVD. ISO or just files?
mikep56 replied to mikep56's topic in Windows Post-Install Wizard (WPI)
Hi Zorphnog and Kelsenellenelvian, Yeah it would probably be better to leave it as folders and files; programs can be added to it directly. A .iso makes sense for nontechnical 3rd party individuals, so they can't mess anything up. Keep up the great work, Kel! Regards, Mike -
WPI on DVD. ISO or just files?
mikep56 replied to mikep56's topic in Windows Post-Install Wizard (WPI)
Hi Zorphnog, Yeah, I didn't think that it would matter. Thanks for the response. Mike -
Hi All, I have been using this program for months, and it rocks. I usee an nLite CD for Windows unattended installation, and a WPI DVD for program installation. This is so sweet... Anyway, I have a simple question. Does it matter whether I burn WPI onto the DVD as files and folders, or create an ISO image first, and then burn the image? I would think functionally it is the same; isn't that the definition of an image? Great piece of software, Kel, keep up the good work! Regards, Mike

Works OK when running wpi.hta
mikep56 replied to mikep56's topic in Windows Post-Install Wizard (WPI)
Hi Kelsenellenelvian, I named it config001.js. I have used this method before with no problems. I think that the screen resolution of my VM was set wrong, and I couldn't get to the checkboxes for selecting what to install. It seems to be OK now. Must be a brain fart or something! Anyway, thanks for the quick response. Mike -
Hi All, This is an awesome place for great apps and info. I have been using WPI for about 6 months now, and I want to check out my work with a virtual machine and an .iso file. I used Nero 6 Ultra to create my .iso file. I removed all the installable programs but one to speed up the image creation process. I also added an autorun.inf file to automatically launch WPI upon insertion of the CD. When I double click Autorun.inf in the root of the WPI directory, WPI opens and all is well. But after creating the image file and capturing it in my virtual machine, WPI opens, but the only things available are the Begin Install, Selections, and Exit buttons, and the Selections dropdown box. There are no other interface elements present. The configuration files are all there. I checked each folder under the WPI folder, and the only 2 that are different from my virtual machine and the bigger setup that I have been compiling are the Install folder, with all the programs in it, and the WPI Scripts folder, which has my custom configuration file, along with all of the other configuration files required. I just can't figure it out! Thanks in advance for any help. Mike

Hi rendrag, Thanks for the response. I guess I forgot to mention that the cable modem connects the the PC via USB, not ethernet. There is however, a built in ethernet port on the internet connected PC. So this PC would get the router between the built in ethernet and the other PCs? Sorry, but I am just not very network-literate. Mike

Hi All, I currently have about 6 PCs scattered about in different rooms of my house. How would I go about setting up another PC to be used as a file/services server? I am looking at Video On Demand, Internet Connection Sharing, printer sharing, etc. Thanks for any info. Mike

Would Not Copy A File To C:\Program Files

Would Not Copy A File To C:\Program Files
mikep56 replied to mikep56's topic in Windows Post-Install Wizard (WPI)
Hi zorphnog, You nailed it right on the head! The path 'C:\Program Files' has a space in it and it needs double quotes to work, while the path 'C:\temp' has no spaces and hence no double quotes. As Carlos Mencia would undoubtedly say "DEE DEE DEE" Thanks for all the help, and keeping this forum a 10. Regards, Mike -
Would Not Copy A File To C:\Program Files
mikep56 replied to mikep56's topic in Windows Post-Install Wizard (WPI)
Hi zorphnog, OK I will try that tonite, and report back tomorrow. Regards, Mike -
Hi Kel, From using WPI and reading the forums, I understand that there is a bug that places double quotes where they shouldn't be. What are rules for using the double quotes; ie when are double quotes used and when are they not used? Thanks for clearing this up for me. Regards, Mike PS i am using the new version of WPI, v6.2

Would Not Copy A File To C:\Program Files
mikep56 replied to mikep56's topic in Windows Post-Install Wizard (WPI)
Hi Kelsenellenelvian, OK, the command that works is FILECOPY "%wpipath%\Install\Test\test.txt" C:\temp. This command copies the file 'test.txt' from the install folder in wpi to the temp directory in the root of the hard drive, C:\. Now this command FILECOPY "%wpipath%\Install\Test\test.txt" C:\Program Files\Test does not work. The destination directory is present and all system attributes are off, but the file 'test.txt' does not get copied there. No error messages or boxes are shown. As a sanity check, I wrote an AutoIt script to do this same thing, and it works flawlessly. Is there a command line switch for the FILECOPY command? Thanks for any replies. Regards, Mike -
