Thanks Explorer09, someone double checking is always helpful, especially on things that don't show up on the monthly security bulletin such as "Note: 2661254 + 2728973 (rvkroots.exe) replaces 2718704. 2661254 is not a high-priority update AFAIK."

I've decided from now on to leave in the batch files all my hardware specific driver commands but comment them all out as well as some other non-freeware applications I install.

  2. VirtualBox is obviously the big one, but there's also VMware Server 1.0.10 (and other VMware products) and Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 SP1 (and other Microsoft products).

However one concern is will drivers for one version of these VMs work for different versions (by this I mean will drivers for VirtualBox 3.0.14 work on VirtualBox 4.1.18)

If they aren't compatible across versions then there's not really any point including them as they'll quickly go obsolete.

  3. While I personally only use Windows 2000 within virtual machines these days, I'd suggest including the CPU, Chipset, Mass Storage, LAN and WLAN drivers from the DriverPacks archive.

The May 2008 versions (W2K support after this gets a bit dodgy) of these 5 packs only amount to 33.5 MB. Sound and Video drivers take up far larger amounts of space but unlike the 5 groups I nominated they are not necessary to getting a system running and online and hence can easily be added later.

Perhaps you might want to consider adding VM drivers as well?

  5. cu·mu·la·tive [kyoo-myuh-luh-tiv, -ley-tiv] adjective

    1. increasing or growing by accumulation or successive additions: the cumulative effect of one rejection after another.

    2. formed by or resulting from accumulation or the addition of successive parts or elements.

    3. of or pertaining to interest or dividends that, if not paid when due, become a prior claim for payment in the future: cumulative preferred stocks.

So your options are nothing or A or A+B or A+B+C

  6. Strange, my SP1 disk (which is really RtM, XP x64 and Server 2003 x64 were released when Server 2003 32-bit had already received SP1) has a volume label of ARMPXOEM_EN

Also there is no SVCpack directory on a default SP1 (or SP2) disk, did you buy an OEM disk yourself (in a plastic DVD style case) or was it supplied with your computer?

  7. 1) Is the directory structure contained in your Config_XP-64_date.7z file supposed to overlay the contents copied from one's XP x64 CD or is it just something to keep the files organized before slipstreaming?

Both, after slipsteaming one should copy the Run*_XP-64.bat files and the AddOns & RunOnce folders to the nLite working directory as indicated in step 9 of the guide.

    2) When I was integrating SP2 using nlite, I got a warning dialog about existing hotfixes that needed to be removed before applying the service pack. Is this normal? My XP x64 source was copied directly from a factory pressed CD. Any hotfixes present must have been put there by Microsoft.

No it is not normal, are you sure that your CD isn't SP2 already? Check the root directory of the CD, if it has WIN51AP.SP2 then the disk is Service Pack 2.

    3) Your "Internet Explorer 8 subgroup" has an old version of 5eraph's Internet Explorer 8 AddOn from 2009_03 along with several updates. I assume that the latest version of 5eraph's Internet Explorer 8 AddOn already has those updates included. Can I just use that instead, or is there some specific reason you're using the older version?

Yes you can use the updated version if you like, in fact you can use 5eraph's pack and skip the vast majority of the Hotfixes, needing only DirectX, WMP11 and .Net related ones.

    4) Regarding DirectX... I see that you're using the directx_Jun2010_redist.exe in RunOnce. code65536 built addon packs for DirectX (later maintained by Yumeyao) that purport to be equivalent, yet quite smaller. Is there some advantage to or benefit from using the redist version that I'm not considering? http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8136

You can try it, but I haven't tested it. Considering I've never heard of an x64 capable computer that only has a CD rather than a DVD drive I've never been worried about the size of the various installers.

    5) Regarding WMP11... There's a comment near the end of this thread by user ricktendo64 about KB970159 and the boooggy's WMP11 slipstreaming tool. What is he talking about?... http://www.ryanvm.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4109&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=wmp++slipstreamer&start=1050

Googling it, it seems to be similar to the old and tempermental Media Transfer Protocol, as it's not a high priority download it's not included in the update list.

  8. That might be due to the unofficial kernel you use, with a standard kernel launching Opera as a member of the Users group brings up the following message box:

    Startup error

Opera has failed to access or upgrade your profile. This may have occurred because your computer has insufficient resources available or because some files are locked by other applications. You may have to restart your computer before Opera will start again.

  11. 5eraph: You've got to admit, the KB955417 note accurately describes what in fact is fixed and is less obscure about it than most such notes.

Explorer09: Yes I did read the description on KB982666 and KB2478953 when they first came out which is why they weren't included at that time. As you might note they are now included only as optional updates, as indicated by the green description note.

Thank you Explorer09 for reporting that nLite bug, I'll have to keep an eye out in future for that ASMS folder.

I've also taken a look at the optional updates that 5eraph includes and added those that aren't Hotfix by Request (HBRs), I already had most of them, the most significant addition being exFAT partition support.

And here I thought - only 2 relevant security bulletins this month, rather quiet.

  15. I certainly admire their efforts in that regard and of course one can use this guide anyway one sees fit but I for one would not recommend Windows 2000 for front line use these days.

To use the infamous car analogy, if you took a 1930's car that had been sealed away and was in mint condition it wouldn't be as safe to drive as an equivalent brand new model. Sure you could retrofit some things, seat belts shouldn't be too hard for instance, but good luck retrofitting crumple zones. By the way I usually use this analogy to describe why the ****ashima reactor partial meltdown is a poor reason to write off nuclear power.

At one stage I was considering taking an old box and using W2K on it as the basis of a media PC, but 10 minutes down the road they're selling ex-lease Core2 quad machines for $230. At that price it simply isn't worth mucking around with a box from 2003 running W2K that I wouldn't really trust on the internet.

    Edit:

What is with the censoring on this site, that wasn't even a dirty word, at least not in English.
