Are you sure about that? I wanted to use this information to prevent my (ACPI) computer from powering itself down. (I'm using a central switch to power off the computer and all peripherals. When the computer powers itself down you can easily forget to use the switch, spoiling about 25 Watts) So I renamed win.com to winorig.com, wrote a new win.com which only beeps once with the internal speaker, and put it in \Windows, did the BootGUI=0 trick, and launched windows (winorig.com) from autoexec.bat. It still powers off the computer, and I didn't hear a beep. Well, maybe Windows 'knows' which file lauched it? So from within Windows I renamed Win.com etc. Didn't help. I filled Win.com with junk from within Windows, for the case Windows uses the start sector, didn't help either. So I think Win.com isn't involved in shutdown, or it is loaded in memory, and waits till Windows returns to do it's trick. I found this link about the win /Z parameter. This works on my computer. So ACPI is downcompatible with APM, or Win.com contains poweroff code for both APM and ACPI.

On a dual boot system I've used ext2 for W95 (on W98SE). Worked. But unfortunately it's readonly. (Well, maybe fortunately, since sometimes it lost its perception of the ext2 partition, showing garbage in Explorer.) AFAIK there are no freeware r/w for W9x.

You've got a problem. W9x internally uses a 32 bit filepointer, so it cannot use files bigger than 4 GiB, no matter which filesystem you use. That is easy to prove, just try to create a >4GiB file on a networkdrive, W9x will fail, while an XP system will succeed. (Assuming the network drive has a proper OS/filesystem). /Edit: The trick FAT64 uses to create a bigger file, is to create a subdirectory with several <4GiB files in it. Your video software could do the same. A video DVD is always devided in <=1GiB files. I suppose this is done for the same reason.

Tab explorer. Everything in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved which is not Microsoft's is a '3rd party shell extensions'. But all items under this tab could change the affinity of explorer.

Maybe. It's caused by a 3rth party shell extension. When you can isolate the extension, maybe you'll can find an updated, fixed version. When your system is crippled by this, than explorer should have an affinity of 1 processor. Download AutoRuns, and use it to switch off the shell extensions one by one. Reboot after each switch. When explorer has an affinity of 2 processors, you have found the evil one.

Could it be possible that it's back in DOS? This is roughly the same behaviour as you could get on an pre APM or ACPI machine running W95, without logos.sys. In that case you could change msdos.sys: BootGUI=0 and autoexec.bat: <snip> C:\Windows\win.com shutdown When windows fails to shutdown, it will return to the command prompt, which will excute next command in line.

Having Windows on another drive is just fine. I 've done it that way for years (started with NT4). Windows doesn't have any problems with it. Some programs have problems with it, though. As uid0 mentioned, you can use the SUBST command a a work around. But I wouldn't use subst C: H:\ but create a subdirectory, and use subst C: H:\SillyProgramsC Why give a silly program an easy way to your precious windows directory? By the way, there's a bug in XP. When you have a substituted C drive, and you put in an USB stick, this will also get the letter C, and will be hidden and unusable until you 'unsubst' C: with the command subst /D C:

You could also try Off By One. A very small self-containing graphical browser, which doesn't need or use an installation, and which even fits on a floppie.
