  1. Windows 10 itself works great. If you try and tweak it to "optimize" by disabling things, you're just making more problems.

It's not a good idea to disable Microsoft Defender. Hell, it's been the best antivirus all year.

This meme sums things up nicely about people who tweak and optimize, only to break their OS:

  2. @forjonny Storage Sense / Free space now is the same as using the Disk Cleanup utility. You can turn Storage Sense on to automate how often it cleans unneeded files, which can be beneficial.

    To answer your questions:

    • It doesn't matter, actually. You can use either one and they both accomplish the same thing. The disk cleanup utility is most likely still there as it supports command line switches, which allows automating disk cleanup.
    • Storage Sense does clean everything out, the only thing I've ever seen come back is a few KB worth of temp files for the browser.
    • You have the new Settings and the old Control Panel. Both work just fine, though Microsoft is having people shift towards using Settings. Honestly Settings does a great job with everything and the search is very intuitive.
  3. It’s been a long time in the making. Finally, I’ve released the Anti-Malware Toolkit 2! Check it out! It has a lot of quality software to help users get their PCs in good working condition.

The Anti-Malware Toolkit 2 has been released! Lunarsoft has always had the goal of helping users rid their computers of malware by suggesting a variety of tools.

The search for the right program can be daunting for some users, and takes valuable time. It’s already stressful enough when your computer gets infected by malicious software. Rather than have those users suffer by searching several websites for the right software, there was a better goal. To give users a program that would eliminate the search, providing direct downloads to the files to help get them back to a clean, operational state.

:hello: No, you ain't! No way! Win 10 has actually an insane interface and is really perplexing to use. And you're not alone, I, for one, do abhor Win 10 with a passion. I don't think I can be of much help to you with Win 10, sorry, but rest assured you're my hero for even giving it a try! You have all my sympathy.

    Where do I type diskmgmt.msc?

Where do I find the control panel to search it wih cortana? What actually is cortana? I am all question marks.

Am I handicapped because of my age being 88 years?

Would it be possible to install WinXp on the Lenovo Windows 10 desktop machine?

Or even if it was doable, it would be very silly to do it?

Please ignore the Windows 10 haters. Sadly you see way too much bashing on Windows 10 on this forum.

You have several options to access Disk Management.

    • Click on the Windows symbol and type "Disk Management". This will show "Create and format hard disk partitions", which once clicked will open Disk Management. This is most likely the easiest way to access it.
    • If you have the Cortana search bar (seen in the image below) you can simply type "Disk Management" there, too.

    Other ways include:

    • Pressing Windows key + R and typing diskmgmt.msc,
    • If you have This PC showing on the desktop or in the Windows Start menu, you can right click and select Manage...

There's also third party software that can do it as well, but Disk Management works perfectly fine.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask me.

I used to have Windows Server 2016 and Visual Studio 2002 and Visual Studio 2003 perfectly and solve all the problems to be able to install it. But when installing Visual Studio 2003 there were many errors, so cancel the installation. Then, try VS2002, I have the .NET FX 1.0 but the prerequisite installer tells me that it is not installed. Have any of you tried to successfully install these versions of Visual Studio in Windows Server 2019 or Windows 10 April 2018 update?

Please do not come with "Upgrade to Visual Studio 2017" or "Return to Windows Server 2016"

That's your only solution, or using Visual Studio Community.

Refer to your description, I suppose the VS 2003 is incompatible with the Windows 10 1703 build. Since the VS 2003 is very old and we are not support it for a long time, please check its product life cycle.

Usually, we recommend customers to use the latest VS 2017 RTM version, it works best with the Windows 10 and have lots of improvements and new features.

Visual Studio 2003 is only compatible with:

    • Windows 2000
    • Windows NT
    • Windows Server 2003
    • Windows XP

And support ended back in 2013.

I would definitely upgrade to Visual Studio Community at the very least and be sure to keep your OS fully up-to-date.

  6. I still am not using any anti-virus. Never had any such need. Have the built in Windows Defender with my Windows 10 install. If I need be, I have my lifetime license for Malwarebytes.

As stated, Comodo is worthless for any of their so called products. They had too many issues in the past and frankly, I'd recommend Norton over them any day.

For antivirus, Malwarebytes. They're not a full on av, but they cover the entire spectrum. If someone truly wants a good anti-virus that's free, Avira is nice overall.

I will say, I miss Outpost Pro firewall. GlassWire is decent but not as comprehensive. It uses the Windows Firewall so it still does just fine. I'm waiting for Malwarebytes to have a firewall, and hoping it will be of the same quality that Outpost was.

Howdy, 78 year old man here who is running a dual boot with Windows 10 and Linux Mint Debian Edition 2 and planning to upgrade to LMDE3 shortly (as soon as our family refugees from power loss due to Michel leave so I can devote uninterrupted  time to doing my computer upgrades and maintenance).

I HAVE A hp COMPUTER WITH A 2 TB HDD AND A QUAD CORE ATHLON CHIP. ORIGINALLY PURCHASED WITH WINDOWS 8 INSTALLED, BUT UPGRADED TO WINDOWS 10 WHILE IT WE AVAILABLE FREE.

MY QUESTION: IF i RESTORE FROM THE RESTORE PARTITION, WILL IT GO BACK TO WINDOWS 8 OR REMAIN A WINDOWS 10 OPERATING SYSTEM??

It is just full of junk and garbage that I would like to clean up. My files are backed up on an external HDD.  I'd really just like to clean up my Windows 10 to the basics and then add back my files and programs.

I do plan to, as mentioned above, replace LMDE2 Mate with LMDE3 Cinnamon.

Thanks for any comments, answers, snide remarks, etc.

Lots of posts but no direct answer was given to you.

You don't need to use the recovery partition if it still exists. It will most likely reinstall your Windows 8 installation.

You clearly state that you really just want to clean up your Windows 10 install.

    It's easy to do this!

    • Open Settings
    • Click Update & Security
    • On the left side, click Recovery in the left pane.
    • In the right pane, under the Reset this PC section at the top, it will say "If your PC isn't running well, resetting it might help. This lets you choose to keep your personal files or remove them, and then reinstalls Windows."
    • Just below Reset this PC, click the Get Started button. Windows will walk you through the rest. You won't need your Windows key either.

    Hope this helps you out.

Well, are those videos even embedded properly? I personally would prefer that a browser render things by the standard, meaning that embedded videos that the developer uses with an include that contains a Doctype declaration should be ignored or break the page! Yet, there does not seem to be any modern browsers that will do that.

I prefer Palemoon, which is a Mozilla browser. Like Firefox (and you can import your bookmarks and stuff) but without most of the fluff put into the flagship browser.

Note that Palemoon is not an official Mozilla browser, it's a fork of Firefox.

I personally prefer Firefox, with a few good addons.

Yes. It's yet another forum software quirk. You ought not be pinged by the forum... it was just a test performed by one of our SMods. Do please ignore it, and sorry for the inconvenience!

No, that's wrong. It's not a software quirk. He was notified of responses that were posted. The forum software is behaving as it should.

@mike13 I was using a test account and deleted the posts within a minute of making them. You're supposed to receive notifications as soon as posts are made to any topic you follow.

  11. Regardless of how a well educated user/common sense is the best anti-malware, that is not the answer to the topic at hand.

@mike13, Malwarebytes is an anti-malware software that, as of v3, has improved to give protection like an anti-virus (replacing it). It can protect against infections that your common anti-virus software cannot detect or remove. Malwarebytes is a light-weight, efficient anti-malware solution. I've been an Expert on their team since the software was still 0.x alpha stage. While there are many solutions available for anti-virus and anti-malware; none of them work anywhere near as well as Malwarebytes does.

The reason Malwarebytes replaced Windows Defender is because it's an alternative anti-malware solution that integrates into Windows. The same thing happens if you install a firewall. For example, I used to run Agnitum's Outpost Pro firewall before the company discontinued the product due to being bought out. It would replace Windows Firewall in the Windows Security Center as the active firewall solution.

You're perfectly fine and safe allowing Malwarebytes to act as your anti-malware solution in place of Windows Defender.

I hope this helped to address the questions you've had so far, Mike.

  12. Sounds like you need to refresh your Firefox. Had no problems at all with the upgrade, only one addon disabled due to being Legacy/not WebExtension compatible.

Edit: also shouldn't this be in the Software forum rather than Networks and the Internet? I mean, Firefox is software.

  13. It all depends upon the hosting plan and how much space is available overall. Then you need to factor in that this all adds up. For my website, Lunarsoft; I need to factor in that the forums, wiki, and frontpage all count. Then you have to factor in that any images for example that can be hosted on the forums and wiki count towards that overall total. Split all of that up between members for each software and it adds up fast.

That's why many websites say to use mirrors when possible. Web space is not a cheap thing for many people, whether it's 2017 or not.
