I used http://amalux.winbuilder.net/lx41208pg.exe to make BootSDI.img file used for booting from USB-stick via RAMDISK. The BootSDI.img file is located in the root of the USB-stick, prepared with the next version USB_MultiBoot_11.cmd and using NO Copy of XP Install folders (BT and LS). In root of stick we have additionally: XPSOURCE folder complete SETUPLDR.BIN of Server 2003 SP1 copied as RMLD1 to USB-stick, cracked and patched with gsar winnt.sif renamed as ramx1.sif Multiple PE from USB is supported for max 9 Boot Image files either IMG or ISO In the case of 1 Boot Image file you might keep winnt.sif as filename and don't need to patch with gsar makebt\gsar -b -o -s:x46:xda:x74:x03 -r:x46:xda:xEB:x1A %usbdrive%\RMLD1 makebt\gsar -b -o -swinnt.sif -rramx1.sif %usbdrive%\RMLD1 where %usbdrive% is changed for your USB-stick e.g. Q: ramx1.sif [SetupData] BootDevice="ramdisk(0)" BootPath="\i386\System32\" OsLoadOptions="/noguiboot /fastdetect /minint /rdexportashd /rdpath=BootSDI.img" For ISO files we have to use /rdexportascd instead of hd In the PE environment you can first format your C: drive with NTFS format. This LiveXP has a build in XP Setup script to specify XP Setup parameters and to launch XP Setup with XPSetupLauncher.exe Launching XP Setup from LiveXP PE environment is quite interesting. The XPSOURCE folder can be located on USB-stick bootdrive or on any partition of any HardDisk, or you can even use your XP Setup CD as XPSOURCE. This means an Alternative location of Setup files is possible in various ways and seems to be unlimited. After launching XPSetup from LiveXP, the $WIN_NT$.~BT was made on the USB-stick bootdrive, but the $WIN_NT$.~LS folder was made on C-drive used for Install of WINDOWS. So the BT and LS folders are made on different drives Now on Reboot from USB-stick, XP Setup is auto-launched from the modified boot.ini file. Filecopy to WINDOWS Install folder occurs. Then on Reboot from USB-stick I selected to boot from HD1 to start GUI mode and again to Start XP. The XPSOURCE remains on stick OK, $WIN_NT$.~BT folder on stick is removed. Next XP Install from USB via LiveXP PE, the temporary folder is made again. Hi ilko, Interesting new experimental results. There is always more to find out .... At the moment I am adding to USB_MultiBoot.cmd the option to boot with boot.ini Menu from USB with IMG or ISO Boot Image Files loaded into RAMDISK. It is possible now to add Multiple PE Boot Images in a similar way as described by diddy in his great Guide, Step 9a - Add another BartPE, for booting with Syslinux Menu. http://www.911cd.net/forums//index.php?showtopic=18846 In this way Multiple PE from USB-stick is possible without making Multiple partitions. Instead of the SDI files I follow the handy aproach with IMG files used by the BootLand community. The BootSDI.img files made with WinBuilder can be used with the next version of USB_MultiBoot.cmd LiveXP is running quite well from USB using booting from RAMDISK with these BootSDI.img files. http://www.boot-land.net/forums/?showtopic=4111 This might be interesting in view of your experiments with Starting XP Setup from RAM. You can try to edit your winnt.sif file copied to $WIN_NT$.~BT folder on USB-stick by adding to the [Data] Section: [Data] DriverSigningPolicy=Ignore NonDriverSigningPolicy=Ignore For Install from CD these settings can occur in the [unattended] Section, but that Section is lost for Install from USB, but they might work from the [Data] Section Please Report your findings. It is possible to make two partitions on the USB-stick using first INSTALL_DUMMY.cmd and Restart. It seems possible then to Install XP from the first Active partition. When I try to Install XP from the second partition (Set Active) of my USB-stick, I get the boot.ini menu and can start TXT Mode of Setup, but I get BSOD 0x0000007B during text mode of Setup. So the configuratuion that you propose seems to give trouble. But it is not necessary to MultiPartition the USB-stick. You might boot with BackTrack from the stick Indirect using GRUB4DOS, selected from the boot.ini Menu. I suggest you follow the same kind of procedure as used for Puppy Linux, for which you find an entry in the menu.lst editable GRUB4DOS menu file in the Root of the stick. Something similar might work for BackTrack and you have Install of XP from USB still available from boot.ini Menu.

In any case the $OEM$ folder selected for the second source, should not be equal to the $OEM$ folder for the first source. I suggest you select for the second source the Empty $OEM$_X folder from the USB_MultiBoot_10 folder, since you want to use the second source without any changes. Such selection is automatically proposed when a winnt.sif is found in the XP Source and is used from the XP Source. But probably this was not your case for the second source How did you prepare the two sources, was nLite used in both cases or not ? To make things clear for me, it would be nice to send your two log files as Attachment. Then I know exactly what folders and files you are using. It is not clear to me what you are doing here (what folder ?)

Thanks for your reply with feedback information. I don't know if this can be solved, anyway it needs a lot of testing to find out what are the possibilities. I don't have Windows 2003, so I cannot help you with this. After running INSTALL_DUMMY.cmd from the makebt folder, it is possible to make USB-stick with multiple partitions.Then using USB_MultiBoot_10.cmd TWICE, you will be able to install BartPE + UBCD4WIN on the different partitions. It is semi-automatic, but you want it more automated for BartPE + WinFLP + ERD Commander ? Anyway it is possible already,allthough the 3-level Menu solution with boot.ini - GRUB4DOS - bootmgr Menu, and first booting with Windows PE 2.0 is may be not your ideal solution.

You should not manually rename the folders Let USB_MultiBoot_10.cmd do the work, the whole procedure is build in the program. The program is designed to make MultiBoot USB-sticks with boot.ini Menu. Such sticks require the files ntldr and ntdetect.com which come from your XP Setup Source. The file ntldr is essential to get the Boot Menu and is not present in your BartPE Source and is also absent in a possible Vista OS environment. For making your BartPE Source there was anyway an XP Setup Source needed, which you can use for making the MultiBoot USB-stick with USB_MultiBoot.cmd

Check your winnt.sif file in the XPSOURCE produced by nLite In the [Data] Section you have got to add: unattendswitch="Yes" so that Windows Welcome Screens are Skipped and screen for giving First User will not appear. For Install of XP from USB we have got to remove the [unattended] Section in your winnt.sif file, and that is where nLite has put the unattendswitch="Yes" Setting for you. Running USB_MultiBoot_10.cmd makes that the Setting unattendswitch="Yes" is lost and you have got to add this in some way to the [Data] section of your winnt.sif file when you want to skip Windows Welcome Screens for giving First User Name. The problem of loosing the unattendswitch="Yes" Setting from the [unattended] Section wiil be repaired in the next version, but for the moment you can use the following workaround. Instead of the manual edit of your winnt.sif file described above, it is also possible after Display of the Setup Parameters, to Select Unattended Install instead of Cancel, and go through the Edit Screens (use Enter) for the 8 Setup Parameters. Selecting Unattended Install will take care that unattendswitch="Yes" is added to the [Data] section of the Current_winnt.sif copy of your winnt.sif file. In this case a given UserName in Screen 8 is not used when Setup Parameters come from nLite. In $OEM$ Folder a file useraccounts.cmd is made, which however is not used in this case.

After Selecting Your XP Source created by nLite, Select Yes to Use all Setup Parameters from XP Source. When the 8 parameters are displayed, you can Select Cancel to keep Settings Unchanged, and you are not asked to create the First User. Then there is No problem

Your USB-stick should be visible in the list of Harddisks in your BIOS (in case of + sign use Enter to Expand the List) Move your USB-stick to first position, above your Computer Harddisk and then Save BIOS Settings. After Reboot from the stick, wait sufficient time to get the boot.ini Menu Also: Have a look at your USB-stick Drive BootSector using TinyHexer e.g. found in MBR_Backup.zip Save the Drive Bootsector of the Bootable and the Non_Bootable stick using MBR_Backup.cmd, and send these as zip Attachments to the forum. How was the Bootable stick with ghost prepared, what is the format and what program was used to make it ? Can you give a Windows Explorer Screendump of this stick, similar as ScreenShot 16 of USB_MultiBoot_9 ? Show Details and Hidden + System Files. Edit: Use a different computer and try Booting from the stick prepared with USB_MultiBoot_9.cmd Most likely the problem is your computer and not the stick.

Warning: When you prepare the USB-stick from a running Vista OS, you have indeed to answer Yes for: Make NTLDR BootSector for Windows XP boot.ini Menu So that is OK. Vista OS can be used to prepare the stick. What you should try and need for Install of XP from USB is to change in the BIOS the Boot Priority: Read the END Help Screen: Boot with USB-Drive plugged and Press [Delete] or F2 to Enter BIOS Setup Change BIOS Boot Settings: Harddisk is First Boot Device Type and USB-Drive is seen as First Harddisk Reboot from USB-Drive and Make Selection from Boot Menu

The program asks: Select your XP Setup Source Folder containing I386 Folder So you should select your winxp Folder

The 50 MB Reserved are only needed to prevent overflow. The $WIN_NT$.~BT Folder uses about 12 MB and cmdcons can take a similar amount of space. Also Folder Size on Disk is larger then the measured folder size, for which also some space is reserved. But If you use the stick only for BartPE without XP Setup Folders, then it is not needed to reserve the 50 MB. The smallest stick size nowadays is 1 GB, and then the 50 MB Reserved is no problem.

Good decision After Install of XP, from cmd Window Run SFC /purgecache which deletes the dll cache and which is a very simple way to reduce the WINDOWS Folder Size by 360 MB The Result is a XP WINDOWS Folder Size on Harddisk of only 785 MB inclusive all Updates.

Did you take care of this: In Both Guides for using nLite I see that Operating System Options > Manual Install and Upgrade is Checked for Removal, which is wrong for Install of XP from USB, as indicated even in the second guide (See Quote).

USB_MultiBoot_8.cmd was used for realising multiple PE from USB-Harddisk having two Partitions.Simply by running the program twice. First BartPE plus XP Setup Folders are Installed on First Partition as usual. Then UBCD4Win is Installed on Second Partition, using Empty XX_Content Source Folder and No Copy of XP Source. In GRUB4DOS menu.lst on First Partition one has to make adjustment for launching UBCD4Win title UBCD4Win - Load PELDR From USB-HD 0 - Partition 1 root (hd0,1) chainloader (hd0,1)/PELDR This works, no problem with manual hexediting and no conflict of PROGRAMS folders USB_MultiBoot_8.cmd does all the work

You can change [userData] Section in winnt.sif file in w_sif folder to your personal needs and use in [Data] section ; unattendswitch=yes The ; in front of this line will take care that you get the Windows Welcome screens where you can fill in User Accounts. The [GuiUnattended] Section in winnt.sif file is important for TimeZone You can change for unattended install the UserXP name in useraccounts.cmd in $OEM$_UserXP Folder. Unattended Install is convenient but requires that you edit winnt.sif and $OEM$_UserXP to your personal needs.
