  1. I just went to the board index, and scrolled all the way down to the bottom, and this is what I saw:

Only two users. And 27 guests.

    Wha- ???

What is going on here? I refreshed the page, and it was the same. But when I clicked my shortcut to MSFN, it was all back to normal. 543 guests and 49 users. Huh? Something weird is going on here. Admins, have you been messing around with things again? Or did you all log off to have a quick coffee break and come back at the same time?

    :wacko::unsure:

  2. Cool! I didn't know how to do that before! Never really thought about it...

Similar question: Where do those yellow stars that appear right below your custom title come from? How do I get more? Why do I get more? When, where, whatever-you-get-the-point do I get more? Do they mean anything in particular? Is there a limit to how many you can get? Is this enough questions?

Oh and why do some people not have any?

  3. Anyone mind if I remove the screenshot from the original post? If anyone needs it there, I'll leave it, but if no-one says otherwise, I'll delete it. No point in wasting attachment space on things that are fixed. At least I hope this is fixed. Haven't seen Mr. B. for a while, so I guess he (or she?) left. Bye Mr. B! :hello:

  4. I would just use a normal web host. Your best bet for free is going to http://www.1010mb.com making a account there and then installing phpBB2 and then wait for phpBB3 to come out which will be very soon, then browse the phpBB site for add ons you could try setting up a Java IRC client and making your own IRC channel on quakenet or a decent IRC server :).

What's with their home page?!? They have this bar off to the right that says "Link Link Link Link Link", and all of those links go to - nowhere! WTF? That alone made me not trust their site. Either they have stupid coders who leave "Link Link Link Link Link" on the home page or something. Totally bizarre. Anyhow, a very similarly-named site that I have been using for a while is 9999mb.com. They seem to have pretty good service. And no Link Link Link, either.

  5. Is there any way, using regular HTML, CSS, PHP or JavaScript to have a webpage automatically insert a certain corresponding icon before a link to a file that is not HTML, PHP or something else that is "regular" for the browser? I want to be able to let people know that the link is to PDF or PowerPoint or something like that, and I don't want to have to insert

    <img src="/icons/pdf.png" width="16" height="16" alt="PDF document" />

or something like that before every link to a certain file. Also it would be nice to be able to do something like what wikipedia does where if a link is external, it shows a little arrow next to it and is a slightly different color. Anyone know of a way to do this? This would be going on PHP pages, but any method with CSS or JavaScript or PHP or just plain old (X)HTML would work.

  6. Yes, I have FTP access, but I can't make anything called .htaccess on my local computer, I get an error telling me I must enter a file name. If I upload a text document to the server and try to rename it to .htaccess, it says

Response: 550 Permission denied on server. You are restricted to your account.

So I guess it can't be done. Oh well, thanks anyway.

  7. windows_95.jpg

However, Windows 95 was possibly the best OS MS ever released IMO. It was stable, but... it just couldn't do as much as the later OS's. Which is why I now run Windows XP.

Really? Windows 95 was great - at the time. But I think the most rock-solid version of windows ever was Windows NT 5. I don't say Windows 2000 or XP or 2003 or whatever for a reason. Here's how I see it: NT 5.0, aka Windows 2000, was the most solid MS OS ever when it was released. But the UI was a bit cappy. Then, along came 2000's brother, NT 5.1, aka Windows XP. 5.1 was essentially the same as Windows 2000 as far as code base goes, but was in my opinion a lot more user friendly. OK, the animated search dog is totally obnoxious and needs an animated rifle to accompany him, if you get what I mean  , and the Welcome screen was a bad idea for everyone but grammas, and the Luna theme is annoying, though I like Royale Noir. So XP was like a nicer, prettier version of 2000. NT 5.2, aka Server 2003 and XP Pro x64, were also a lot like 5.0, just bit more stable. So I don't think Win95 was the best ever. Sorry.

  8. NT 6 = WinME

I had heard all this great stuff about Vista, how it would be a wonderful OS with support for all this cool stuff. It never happened. Just got delayed, dummed-down and DRM'd. I like XP a lot, and I'm sticking with it until Vista is either made better, or until I can no longer get it. Vista != good.

  9. ...Also you can drop a floppy on the floor or handle it while eating a Hershey

Bar and not corrupt it, like you would with a CD. ...

Floppies are SO much fragiler than CDs or USB flash drives. True, CD's can't take a certain level of abuse, but floppies were always going bad from magnets or getting bumped in the wrong place or just randomly flopping - hence the name, I suppose. I don't like them. I avoid them.

  10. Hi,

I've been making a website for a group that uses Yahoo! Small Business web-hosting. Does anyone know of any way to edit the .htaccess file? I'm pretty sure there is one, but I can't seem to be able to find it, and it won't let me upload one. Also, is it possible to apply custom error 404 pages to a sub-domain? That would be nice, too. This has been bugging the heck out of me...

    :hello:

  11. This may not be possible, but perhaps you shouldn't use word. I used to use Word for HTML files, and it always created a colossal pain in the @$$. If you have dreanweaver or frontpage or something designed for that sort of thing, I recommend you use that. Publisher would probably work, too, though it can create issues with non- IE browsers. Or, write the HTML yourself. I think there's a Windows XP PowerToy for making HTML slideshows or something like that; you may want to check that out. Good luck!

  12. Not to offend anyone, but I found this joke quite funny....

Yo momma's so fat, I had to integrate her by parts!

TOTALLY not relevant to this topic, and TOTALLY obnoxious. :thumbdown

What is it with "Yo momma" jokes? They are so juvenile, stupid, immature and just... dumb.

  13. Speaking of animated bits and pieces of windows, does anyone know which dll(s) or exe(s) contain the AVI for the scrolling blue and gold bar at the bottom of the dialog that says "Please wait..." while logging on or off? i know the bitmap is in msgina.dll and another is in shell32.dll but does anyone know where the animated ones are? I haven't been able to find them.

    As for the original post:

Tell us what you want and we'll try to help you, but you need to respond to us please and tell us what it is you want. Could you provide a screenshot of whatever you're talking about in Vista and in XP and show what you want to put where? :hello:

  14. Is there any way to install a Firefox add-on for all users instead of just the one who installs it? I'd like to install Ad-Block Plus and Yahoo Mail Notifier for all of the users on a certain computer, and I don't want to install it for every user individually since that's a waste of disk space to have the same add-on five or so times, and it's a computer with dial-up, so it takes forever to download even the smallest thing. Any way to do this?

  15. Hey all.

Does anyone know what file(s) contain the dialogs that Novell uses for locking the computer, Windows Novell Security dialog, etc? I am referring to Novell Client installed on Windows XP or 2000. I would like to hack around some, like I do with msgina.dll, but I can only find some of the components. Novell's logon system confuses the **** out of me. It seems like some things they replace with their own, others they rely on the default msgina.dll for... it's all unclear.

This is what I've found out:

NWGINA.dll, which is what shows up in

    HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/Winlogon!ginaDLL

That file when opened with ResHacker contains nothing but version info. It has none of the components such as log on, log off, windows security, lock computer, etc. which are in msgina.dll. I did find though a file that appears to be linked to NWGINA.dll in some way that has some of the components I speak of. It has some of the icons that show up at logon, etc. and it has some of the parts of various logon dialogs, etc. It does have the Novell banner that is displayed above the logon, locked workstation, and Novell Security dialogs. But some of the components I want to modify, specifically the Novell Security dialog, with Lock Workstation, Change Password, etc. are not in this file. Does anyone know where these exist?

On the other hand, modifying the Press Ctrl+Alt+Del screen is really, really easy! It's stored as a plain old bitmap that resides in C:\WINDOWS and is named nwelcome.bmp. It can be modded to your heart's content, even made larger. So at least that part is easy to customize.

I particularly want to know where this dialog is, but it would be nice to know more in general about how the heck this whole thing works. Beats me why they can't just have it all in one sensible place like Microsoft does.

I hope someone can help. Thanks! :hello:

PS: If this belongs somewhere else, please go ahead and move it. I put it here because it refers to Novell on multiple Windows NT operating systems.

  16. As with PPT 2003, PPT 2007 has a useful tool to make a presentation CD with your show and any other ones you want to add. The CD includes the PowerPoint viewer on it, and will play the presentation automatically from any computer with Windows 2000 or later, even if PPT isn't installed. This is very handy when trying to give a presentation made in PPT 2007 on ancient school or work computers that ony have PPT 2000 or something. The problem is that PPT 2007 tries - in fact, forces you to - convert your *.pptx (PPT 2007 format) files to *.ppt (PPT 2003 format). Obviously, this is not something you want to do. The viewer itself, despite what the Presentation CD maker leads you to believe, can play all PowerPoint files starting with PPT 97 or 2000 (I don't recall which) up through PPT 2007 files, including *.pptx files. When you go to make the CD, you are led to believe that this isn't possible, but the viewer itself allows you to choose pptx files and appears to play them just fine. So, here's the quick little hack I devised. I always like to save my presentation CDs to the hard disk before burning them, just to test them. The solution is to choose "Copy to Folder" from the CD dialog. Allow it to convert your files to *.ppt. Then, go to where you saved the files and replace any *.ppt files with the original *.pptx files. The final step to make it work properly is to open playlist.txt and replace all of the file names with the correct ones. I just press Ctrl+H and tell it to replace all instances of .ppt with .pptx. So far, it seems to have worked!

So does anyone know why the developers made it so that you are supposed to use PPT rather than PPTX?

I hope folks find this useful! :hello:

  17. Could Mr. B. have something to do with the new option at the logon page to log on without being shown on the user list? I don't recall that checkbox having been there earlier. As for Mr. B. asking to be a friend.... that's odd that you can't accept or deny him (or her - who knows!).

    Crazy. :crazy::wacko:

  18. New, easier way! :thumbup

    HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/CurrentVersion/ProfileList

It has all the SIDs for users, as well as their profile path. It doesn't tell their username, but by seeing the path you can figure it out. For example, if the path is C:/Documents and Settings/Joe, the user is probably Joe. Could be handy.

  19. I found this info in the guidebook about timers and such, but I can't seem to make it work at all. Does anyone know how to use these?

    checkTmr(starttime)

Returns the number of seconds since you used startTmr to start the timer. The starttime is the value displayed by startTmr.

    startTmr

Starts the clock timer. Store or note the displayed value, and use it as the argument for checkTmr( ) to check the elapsed time.

I've only ever used 83's, 83+'s and 84+'s. The TI-83 is really, really crappy. The TI-83+ is a little bit better. The 83+SE is OK, but the lack of USB support is a major down side. The 84+ is great as far as I'm concerned. I think the 84+ SE is supposed to have more memory, but I think the processor is the same. My school used to have only 83s and 83+s, but this year they finally got some new 84+s. Unfortunately, those are only for in-class work; the ones we can check out are all the old crummy ones. That's why I have my own now. :thumbup

Still working on this... I'll report back if I find anything out. :hello:
