  1. Solved. It seems to have been something related to Acronis. When I deleted the Acronis Secure Zone, the mysterious Z: drive disappeared. Thank you all for your good suggestions and willingness to help.
  2. magicfly I'll try your suggestion. Thank you. unnameduser No it's not a mounted volume.
  3. How can I eliminate a mysterious 19.6 GB "Drive Z:" that has spontaneously appeared on my individual personal desktop computer. (Windows XP Professional SP2) It appears in the list of logical drives in Windows Esplorer. No files are vidible in it in Windows Explorer, but the Properties display shows 11.7 GB of files in it. However, this Drive Z: is NOT seen by either the Windows Management Console (Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer Management / Disk Management), or by Partition Magic 8. I haven't figured out which of 3 HDDs it's on. How can I eliminate it? Thank you.
  4. Thank you everybody! I followed all of your suggestions, after which the problem seems to be solved (cross fingers). After uninstalling the cpu drivers, then reinstalling the drivers suggested by nmX.Memnoch , the temp has held steady at around 36 Deg C with my overclock settings. Wow what a huge difference, from 71 Dec C to 36 Deg C just because of the proper cpu drivers. Your help and good troubleshooting ideas were very helpful to me, and much appreciated. Thank you all.

    disabling sfc

Do uyou want to disable SFC in nLite / Options / Patches so the Winlite installation will go faster? Or why else do you want to disable it? Why? Somebody posted a little tweak that stops the SFC error message pop-ups while still leaving SFC enabled. I copied and saved his post, but unfortunately did not copy his name so I don't know who to give credit to. I posted his tweak recently, here it is again: QUOTE alright do this... make a registry file with this in it. This will disable those popups but leave file protection eneabled (so you cannot delete important system files) Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 ;Prevents Windows File Protection from Reporting Errors at Startup After Multiple Unattended Hotfix Installs (WFP is still enabled only warning prompts are disabled) [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon] "SFCDisable"=dword:00000004 END QUOTE Isn't that good enough, so the error message pop-ups stop? Question: If you disable SFC in nLite, then how can you re-enable SFC after you finish your new installation ? I would like to still be able to run the command "sfc /scannow" to double check that I have all the files needed.

    Helpful pointer

This is such a small thing, but it made a huge difference in my nLite results, and made lots of errors go away: n7Epsilon @ Apr 13 2007 pointed this out: QUOTE Try right-click on the XP_Source folder remove checkmark from readonly and then apply it to all subfolders and files... Also check that you have NTFS Write and Modify permission on that folder (Security tab in XP Pro, if you have XP Home then ignore this sentence). END QUOTE (from post 112 in this thread: http://www.msfn.org/board/RELEASE_Boooggy_...44#entry645744) So if you get a lot of errors in your Winlite installation, try that! Again, a small thing, but makes a big difference!
  7. No. Don't waste your money on SLI. Enjoy what you have. Next wave of video cards will blow away SLI with todays cards. That's not far off either. Don't waste your money.
  8. Just installed Windows XP Pro SP2 with nLite slim-down. The air-cooled cpu is AMD Athlon 64 4200+ X2 (dual core). The cpu temperature reads dangerously high - burn-out high. So I took it all apart, reinstalled new Arctic Silver 5, and totally took everything back down to stock settings, with vcore at only 1.296 volts, and after all that (now) : temperatures per Everest Ultimate Edition: CPU 71 Deg C CPu #1 / Core # 1 22 Deg C CPU #2 / Core #2 27 Deg C temperatures per ITE SmartGuardian: CPU 71 Deg C In nLite's Unattended / General tab / Choice of Computer type box, I chose ACPI Multiprocessor PC. Did that affect the type of HAL that was installed, affecting cpu temp? Or is the temp reading probably just something wrong in software? How can I know? (don't have a multimmeter to hand test it).
  9. A long time ago somebody on these forums - I don't remember who or else I would give them credit - wrote this little reg tweak that stops the SFC popup warnings. Just copy the below file which that guy wrote, save it in MS Notepad with a .reg ending, and run it once. It should permanently stop the pop up warnings. It wortks for me. QUOTE alright do this... make a registry file with this in it. This will disable those popups but leave file protection eneabled (so you cannot delete important system files) Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 ;Prevents Windows File Protection from Reporting Errors at Startup After Multiple Unattended Hotfix Installs (WFP is still enabled only warning prompts are disabled) [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon] "SFCDisable"=dword:00000004 END QUOTE
  10. Thank you for your guide. In Part 2 of it you say, QUOTE The Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC is the most compatible, so it's by far the best choice for 32-bit systems. It should be noted that multiprocessor computers can also use this HAL, however they will only make use of a single processor." END QUOTE I'm a little bit worried this means only 1 of the 2 cores in my cpu will do work, leaving the 2nd core idle. Is that what you mean will happen? (AMD Athlon 64 4200 X2 with 32 bit Windows XP Pro)
  11. Ponch, Thank you for giving a reply. Scott
  12. Mara- That file you linked to is: dotnetaio.exe When I try to include an .exe file like that one with the hotfixes, nLite doesn't like it, and gives a message that it can't use that type of file. Do you know of some way to slipstream that .NET Framework 2 + 3 file with nLite? I would like to learn how to do it. Thanks
  13. Previously used nLite 1.35 with great success, but this time getting strange errors. I've been now 3 days trying to make 1 clean WinLite installation file, getting frustrated. Sorry but need help solving 2 recurring errors which recurr with nLite 1.35, 1.40beta, & 1.40 rc: (1) WinLite installation keeps pausing and asking me for parts of "SP2" although my WInXP source already includes SP2. What I've unsuccessfully tried: Completely reintegrated SP2 into the WinXP installation folder by using nLite. During that process nLite first removes some of what had already been integrated into the original source files, then replaces it with the new SP2 integration. (2) Also, WinLite installation keeps pausing and asking me for file "mediactr.cat" although in the nLite Components section I have removed Windows Media Center. Are there any suggested solutions to this? Thank you.
  14. Innocent Devil & nuhi, You were right. I had it set to multiprocessor for my new dual core cpu. After I changed it to "default" it works fine now. So that was the problem. Thank you both. Scott
  15. Was there any good resolution to this problem? I'm still experiencing eternal hang up at blue screen with message: "Setup is starting Windows." Thank you.
  16. Inferi0r, Gorki Thank you for telling me about that new source for the update packs. I sincerely appreciate your help. newsposter You are rebuking me for not actively participating in some other forum? Sorry but I find your point of view strange. Well I guess I don't have as much time as you do. Can't do/know everything! Can't even know as much as you! If I knew everything I'd never need to ask a question. That's why web boards are good, so we can all help each other. My attitude is, I give help when I can and I ask for help when I need it. This time I needed it. jcarle, Thank you.
  17. Does anybody know where to get packs of Microsoft Windows XP Pro hot fix packs? It looks like the hotfix packs on the RyanVM website are not updated any more, at least not since June 2007.
  18. catborise & mara, Thank you both for your advice.
  19. prathapml and Idontwantspam, Thank you both. As for drivers, yes maybe I did remove some drivers in my nLite installation. Yes I did do the "Install or Update Virtual Machine Add-Ons." Networking out of the VM does not work. I will try the shared folder idea. Thank you both for your helpful suggestions. Scott
  20. MS Virtual PC 2007 has been working OK for me. (but I haven't yet figured out how to drag files between the host and the vpc) Yes, it's slow, but speed seems to depend on the amount of RAM you allocate to it. If you let it take the default memory size then VPC2007 runs slower, and if you manually set the memory size bigger it runs faster.
  21. Installation hangs forever at blue screen:"Setup is starting Windows" Is there a known fix? I have re-made many ISO's but they all act the same way. I don't have RAID or anything complicated like that...my setup is very simple. 22. How can I move the files from "My Docs" inside Virtual PC 2007 over to "My Docs" in Windows XP Pro SP2 in my desktop computer, outside the Virtual PC? Dragging doesn't seem to work. I need to get those files out. Already tried the "help and support" on Microsoft's web site. It says, "Users can copy, paste, drag, and drop between guest and host." Unfortunately, that doesn't work. Thought someone here would know the answer. Thank you.
