  1. I've noticed when applying some reg tweaks for folder views and tool bar settings on XP SP2 my firewire drive(s)/partition(s) also dissappeared. Fortunately, my external devices have USB and 1394. Merely connecting the device through USB, then disconnecting it (safley through the disconnect SysTray Icon), and reconnecting the 1394 makes the drives reappear. My config used to use a Ratoc PCIFu1w Firewire card (6 and 4 pin ports), Audigy 2 Zs Platinum Firewire, and the firewire on my board (Asus A7n8v-e deluxe: nvidia). These days however, I just use the Audigy port. Anyway... To apply the folder view and toolbar correctly I needed to have my entire hdd as the systemdrive and not have any other drives connected. The hard part was completely removing the references to my DVD device; powertoys didn't work, but was used anyway. Specifically, don't apply reg tweaks with: {01E04581-4EEE-11D0-BFE9-00AA005B4383} {0E5CBF21-D15F-11D0-8301-00AA005B4383} {1E796980-9CC5-11D1-A83F-00C04FC99D61} {710EB7A1-45ED-11D0-924A-0020AFC7AC4D} ITBarLayout Hope this helps.
  2. Not that it really matters, but in doing sooooo many installations I've determined the following for purely aesthetic purposes. Essentailly these are the largest MB you can type and have "nice" Total Sizes for the details view of My Computer. 1.00 GB = 1031 MB 1.25 GB = 1290 MB 2.00 GB = 2059 MB 4.00 GB = 4106 MB 5.00 GB = 5134 MB 6.00 GB = 6153 MB 7.00 GB = 7181 MB 7.50 GB = 7691 MB 8.00 GB = 8201 MB 9.00 GB = 9228 MB 10.0 GB = 10342 MB 11.0 GB = 11370 MB 12.0 GB = 12389 MB 16.0 GB = 16484 MB The largest MB's you can type for FAT32 is 32.0 GB = 32769 MB
  3. Since I've found this forum to be a weatlth of information, I thought I might ask around about something that has bothered me for a few years. I have an ATI AIW 9600xt, Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Zs Platinum, and analog 7.1 speakers. My internal DVD is connected only via an ATA/133 Cable (no other connections to the motherboard or sound card). As I'm sure owners of ATI's MultiMedia Center (MMC) know, you need to set the Audio Tab to Pass through to audio device and select either ATI Rage Theater Audio or CyberLink Audio Renderer (ATI) I've noticed when I select ATI Rage Theater Audio, the sound works fine and the DVD plays well. When I select CyberLink Audio Renderer (ATI) the soundblaster card displays a Dolby Digital On Screen Display (OSD) water mark, but then the DVD play is extremely choppy and sometimes there is no sound. So I'm wondering, has anyone else experienced this problem? thank you
  4. I read a lot about people trying to make their install smaller, I'm wondering what sizes do people generally get. Not counting the pagefile or files and folders copied due to $oem$\$1, I end up with an installation size of 2.03 GB for Xp Sp2. This includes: All patches and updates listed in the Sticky (HOTFIXES: Win2000 SP4 – WinXP SP1 – WinXP SP2) Also included: Mbsa, Msft Calc plus, powertoy calc/image size/tweakui/timer shot, firefox, mp10, divx codec, huffyuv codec, dvd shrink, jdk 1.5.01 + jre, quicktime, real player 10, spyblaster, spybot, winamp, acrobat reader 7.0, flash and shockwave, mgi viewer plug-in, mru blaster, spygaurd, zone alarms, and all the plug-ins and downloads from the Msft Media site (mono 2 multi, wm9 cap, wm encoder, bonus pack, etc) I just wondering how much space is saved. [EDIT] To get my space I Double-clicked c: Ctrl+A Ctrl+Click pagefile.sys, and my install folder(s) to remove these Alt+Enter
  5. My 256Color
  6. Attached are my reg tweaks, most can be found in the reg_tweaks.txt in the sticky. The main difference is these are sorted via directories. Some of the reg entries are bundled together (Folder Options, Security Center, Media Player), but most are single commands. With the exception of disabling certain services, I do not belive there are duplicate listings. Please note, there is NO UNDO. If you don't want a setting, change the entry to .txt and it won't be installed. To run call ExeReg.cmd [EDIT] Some of the Display directory rests upon my 256Color.theme. I have this stored in $OEM$\$$\Resources\Themes [Shell] DefaultStartPanelOff=No DefaultThemesOff=Yes CustomDefaultThemeFile="%windir%\Resources\Themes\256Color.theme" This saves some time and reg tweaks. The 256Color.theme is just black and grey w/o gradient fills and uses (well used to) the base 16 colors native to Windows. Finally, I'm trying to figure out four things: 1) how do I set Firefox to be the default browser 2) how do I stop Outlook Express from opening up; see Firefox installs ol-e thread 3) Set Auto-Hide in the task bar; I'm pretty sure I can find this one 4) How to make the task bar taller
  7. It appears, even if i delete all the keys under SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Outlook Express still opens I guess it is always there
  8. Well, with the exception of removing the registry keys, nothing else worked. Typically I don't install an email clientSomething else I've noticed, OE and Messenger are still unchecked in the Program Access and Defaults section, and still listed as not installed in the Windows Components Section. Even after I've attempted to send an email. As for messenger, I'm attempting to remove the Messenger from Internet Properties | Programs | Manage Add-on... Finally neither oe or wm appears in the start menu Think this qualifies as a security flaw, or just a bug?
  9. Well, using IE I find it also launches Outlook Express, which in turn allows Messenger to be installed. ok, now I will try to remove the hotmail and outlook express registry keys you mentioned. Will get back some time tomorrow
  10. 1st if i didn't install Firefox, then I would need to set ieaccess to on, which I've done since I'm testing my reg settings. As for internet properties (via control panel | internet options ), the email client is blank (for that matter so was the start menu option). I'm going to burn and reformat again to check the reg key you suggested. YesAnd by the way, Outlook Express still opens Unfortunately, I ran the test though firefox before checking the reg key. Under HKLM\Sw\Clients\mail I have hotmail and Outlook Express sub keys Be back in a hour or two oh ya, and by the way, thank you
  11. Something is strange, From my winnt.sif/Unattend.txt I have Ol-E and Messenger disabled. Neither show up in my start menu. When I check the default access settings, both ol-e and messenger are unchecked (no 'enable access') From the cmdlines, I install Firefox and set it as my default browser. Here's the thing, I don't install an email client, so if I click a mailto: link, then outlook opens up, and messenger gets installed. Aside from completely erasing ol-e and messenger, is there a tweak to disable this auto turn on?
  12. I'm just wondering, I apply most of my reg tweaks during the cmdlines.txt portion using HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT instead of HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ just wondering if there is a difference? ... I am just speaking of keys specific to these sections, not hklm, hkcr, or hkcc
  13. In Browsing post I found quite a few .ini settings, and am wondering which are still in use, and which ones do what [SETUP] XFULL=0; 1 overrides and installs all XNAME="some user"; a string XKEY=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX; is this needed XAllShort=0 ; 1 installs all possible short cuts, overrides the next 4 XDesktop=0 ; if 1 installs short cut XQuicklaunch=0; if 1 installs short cut XStartmenu=1; if 1 installs short cut xtray=0; not too sure about this one XSkinsetting=Specify the SKIN to use in Winamp. XMODERNSKIN=1 XINET=2 ; 0-always 1-modem 2-never; this setting is the same as the next two xintex=2 ; 0-always 1-modem 2-never xtypecont=2; 0-always 1-modem 2-never Xregopt=1; ? XREGAUD=1; all audio files are registered, same as next XAUDIO=1 ; all audio files are registered XREGVID=1; all video files are registered, same as next XVIDEO=1; all video files are registered xagent=1; Installs the winamp svc XWRITEWAV=1; enables .wav XNSV=1; ? xlibrary=1; ? Xvisual=1; ? Xextra=0; ? XDCOUT=1; ? xdircont=1; ? xnetscape=1; ? Xhotkey=1; ? Xjump=1; ? Did I miss anything? [Edit] I just downloaded the cab files. So each X%cab% = 0 will skip the cab, and 1 will enable it? If the cab is not listed, then the x%cab% is not available? [Edit Edit] For some reason the image did not show up for me the other day, not even the "no image" red-x ... now I understand
  14. this is just a thought, try removing the space in ( *.* ), to get for /r %%I in (*.*) do makecab.exe %%I I'm working on a slipmaker (yes I know many are out there, but I need to maintain sp0, sp1, sp1a, and sp2), and I'm using the 'for /r'. I do seem to remember something about it not working when I used 'dir'. EDIT: BTW: I'm not a batch person either just hours and hours of seaching
  15. Hello, First, let me write, I love this pack BTS. I was wondering if it would be possible to expand on the driver pack folder names. I've figured out M/S/W/L, it's the sub directories I'm not too sure of. I know AD = ADaptec, I = Intel, ... but am unsure of many of the sub-dirs. Is it possible to post the correlation between the sub-dirs and mfr's names? Thank you
  16. FOR /F %%I IN ('DIR /AD /OGN /B') DO ( CALL :TRAVERSAL %CD%\%%I ) Try changint the /f to /r, where r implies recurively go through all directories in current folder for /r %%I in ( *.* ) do makecab.exe %cd%\%I Just a throught
  17. If you're slipping sp2, then sp2 has issues with power managment. Prathapml is correct, typically, in xp (ver0, sp1, 1a, 2) you need to have all your drivers installed; otherwise win can't put some devices to sleep, or shutdown certain buses. If you went to sp2, then there could be issue's with wdm vs wfd drivers. Power Management is a major update in sp2, and in the next win OS. If you're using a notebook, ensure you have the mfr's system updates. Typically the system updates are the ones that control the function keys (Fn) for keyboards, volume controls, etc. On Dell notebooks, you should install the quickset for full functionallity. Dell's quickset is as important as its chipset drivers. Without the quickset, I've found some Dell drivers do not install fully.
  18. So I was about to slip KB833407 and noticed it said the font contained unacceptable symbols. Anyone figure out what the unacceptable system is?
  19. Hello everyone, I was wondering, is anyone still continuing to slipstream sp1, or did everyone go to sp2? On upgrades I've found sp2 uninstalls the mfr's wdm in favor of msft wdf uni-drivers. Moreover some, wdm drivers run on top of a wdf layer. This is, of course, in addition to other resource hits, and advanced usage issues. For the time being, I'm trying to keep my sp1 slip, and periodically testing an sp2 slipstream and upgrades, but generally waiting for mfr's to release new drivers (I can't wait to slipstream 30+ wdf). I'm hopping most mfr's will have new drivers by Christmas. Why's this important? When sfc runs, one needs to have the correct image available. Anyone have any thoughts?
  20. Well thank you people for all your help, but I got to let this thread drop for a while. I'm going out of town for a week and won't be around my system. As it is, for the past few days, I've been kinda busy. Thank you once again
  21. Ok, here's a stupid question, should I install vmware on a known good system, or my test system. By the way, I replaced my sound card, with an on-board one and an sb live!, both yielded the same error messages about files not being signed. Although it appears that I only have 3-4 files not properly signed. Anyway, if I do have bad hardware, I've at least narrowed it down to the mainboard, cpu, and/or the video card. Also, this is using the original xp sp1a pro CD, so nothing is slipstreamed that msft doesn't want. This also requires me to baby sit my pc for 45 minutes:( So does anyone else have similar setuperr.log's?
  22. Sorry about not posting mine, stupid of me. Two things, first, I noticed a few people were using txtsetup to rename files from 8.3 to long names. I thought one of the great things about booting from the CD is setup uses winnt32 which automatically recongizes long names without the need append/fix/edit the txtsetup; provided you don't use spaces (use underscores or just no spaces). Also, I just copy and rename my unattend.txt to winnt.sif. First, A little history on my question, this is still on the msfn site. I have replaced my optical drive with 5 differnet drives (dvd-r/dvd+-r/dvd,cdrw/cdrw/cd), have tried 5 different hard drives (ata (133)120,(66)18, (33)4gb and scsi (u160)8gb/(u320) 36gb), and have changed ata/scsi cables several times. Not to mention I've tried several different scsi cards. Moreover, I am using a new msft shipped xp pro sp1a cd (no scratches, has only been used to reinstall 20 times)...it is not unattended anymore. As I write, I am attended installing xp for millionth time. Presently I have removed my sb audigy 2 plat card, and can tell you I have received the same error messages with the same file (no sound card in use). I am going to see if either 1) using the onboard sound 2) old sblive 5.1 plat still yields the same error messages; the sb live audigy 2 plat is not recongized as I am sure some people know. This is really driving me nuts. What get me is, I don't know if this error is new, or is always the case. It's late for me, and I'm booked tomorrow, but I will get back. Since someone might ask, no, running sfc does not fix anything. My test sys: MSI KT3 Ultra2 AMD Athlon 2200+ XP 512 MB RAM Ricoh dvd/cdrw Adaptec 2940u2w ~ nothing connected Intel Pro 100+ Mangmnt ATI AIW 128 2x AGP 32 MB video IBM UltraStar ATA/66 18.6 GB I have serial, parallel, RAID, and floppy disabled, and am using USB 1.1/2 for all of my external devices. All my devices were whql/amd certified for use with at least 9x/nt/2k. I think the video card is listed as compatible with XP. In any case, this system is entrirely contained on the xp sp1a pro cd driver cabinet.
  23. I was just wondering if people could post their: %windir%\setuperr.log (these should be 0, or just a few K, maybe even bytes when zipped) I'm trying to determine why I'm having some issues. Thank you
  24. Well I've changed my DVD-R to a DVD/CDRW, then to a CD w/o success. I have changed the internal cables ~ again no luck. Guess I get to try a new hard drive.
