List yer unattainable xp customizations
svasutin replied to mraeryceos's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
Here's a thought, Install xp, however you normally do it. Export the registry Make all your changes Export your registry again Then apply windiff or whatever to track the changes This should get you your registry tweaks. There are a few minor details, you might not want to add, but more less, its the idea. -

Ya, I remember scripting 95 cd to install 100 floppies for c; glad those days are way behind me. It can be done, but there are lots of reboots. FYI, DVD+-RW's were available in Europe in 1997, so I had some experience with CD's prior to their US release. I carry an external hdd with partitions for 95/bob/98/98se/nt/me/2k/xp around when I go on support calls. When I encounter 9x (pre me) systems, I always take the 'puters home since they require many, many reboots. I gotta say this about Microsoft, they made an incredible OS with 95. I know people who burn dvd's on 95. I don't know how they coded the system to be so flexible and far reaching, but they have my vote when look towards future and backward compatibility for an OS. I suppose there are two main issues: driver and software support. As long as driver.com caches drivers, and people still have access to software updates, then it should work. However, 9x is fundamentaly unstable. Wasn't there some patch for an issue if 9x was on for more than 49.7 days? -

Actually, the vast majority of home people us 9x platforms. Most repair business is done for 9x systems. With the issue's concerning xp sp2 and longhorn, I'm telling most people to wait a while before any purchases; especially with the new driver model (WFD). Also, xp patches typically are also applied to winme. However, if clients really want to reinstall an os, I usually ask them to go xp home. It is my firm belief, reformatting should never be a support option, thus, some cases, I'm stuck helpping people with 9x. There are many many p2/p3/k2/duron's etc. Except for us geeks and freaks, most people are still using pre 2k platforms. As for the usefulness of an unattend 9x, there really isn't any. As for safer, Msft announced some time ago, they are not going to provide security fixes for old os. In other words, they decieded to patch only 2k/xp and not make updates for 9x/nt. -
The recovery console cannot be installed at the same time as the os, when booting from a CD. After your installation, then you can guirunonce to add the console. winnt32.exe /cmdcons /emsport:off /unattend30:i386\unattend.txt The recovery console only installs the floppy files part from your xp cd. However, if you are using floppies to boot, then there is a way to pre-install the rec cons. Doing this however, means lots of 8.3 renaming and many other support issues. As we burn new cd's with updates, it's important to reinstall the recovery console. If your xp cd is out of date, then using the recovery console could cause you more problems. Also, there is security issue when you install the recovery console to see it, look at your winnt.sif that's created. Of course, if you install to FAT32, then a win9x boot disk and trend micro recovery floppies work most wonders. A good idea after you install the recovery console is to do the following. 1 Using your svcpack folder, copy the contents, except the kb(q)*.exe's to the cmdcons folder. 2 For each file that is replaced, determine its location on your running system. MOST IMPORTANT STEP 3A Save all this info in a text file. 3B modify your text file (rcvr.txt) to read copy explorer.exe c:\windows\explorer.exe copy fileno2.zyx filepath\fileno2.zyx etc, foreach %1 Now, when you need to use your recovery console, life will be easy. Now you can reboot. 4 if you're really nuts, you can dir /a /b >somefile.txt, to re create certain dir's and files that may be corrupted. Since viruses typically infect iexplorer and ndis, it's a good idea to have these in your cmdcons folder as well. Don't go too nuts about copying files into the cmdcons folder as you don't have access to all folders on your drive.

Corrupt Files On Original CD
svasutin replied to shortbus's topic in Unattended Windows 2000/XP/2003
You know, I have the same problem, but I think it's related to DVD's and region free patches. dx won't install and component If you do have a license/cd you can contact msft and they will ship you out a new one free of charge. Could you please post your %windir%\setuperr.log. I'm wondering if your issue is the same as mine. -

I don't suppose other people could check their setuperr.log for similar issues. I have 5 recurring file issues: FileNameBelow is, well, below Your setuperr.log is located in c:\windows, and should only be updated when xp is installed. Presently, mine is 2k Thank you -

coo Prathapml I've uploaded a file containing all the updates I use if anyone is interested. It's mylist.zip and is a 47kb (compressed to 7kb) text file. It's broken down into svc, cmdline, and gui sections by date. It appears the problem is not with my install, but something to do with my dvd-r's. After receiving my new xpsp1a pro cd from msft, I find I encounter the same problems with the same files ; I suppose I should try installing and extracting from a cd device to see if there is a difference. Thank you once again. -

As for qchain, I found an interesting kb, 815062 updated qchain fix for xp/2k Anyway, looks like I really messed things up somewhere Stupidly I deleted my entire image and started from scratch. Now my setuperr.log is hugh. Thank you, all of you, for all your comments and help. I've got lots of work trying to figure out what to change and replace. Does msfn keep a list of up to date files, including version numbers, referenced to kb/q files, and placement in the cmdlines vs svcpack? If not, anyone interested in starting one? Thank you -

Some 1,400 files later, I've got a few notes: First, dosnet.inf does have two [files] sections Next, upon removing useless files, I have 830 files (includes everything needed); getting rid of kb/q exe's, security cat's, inf's, and multi language I am left with 615 files. From these 615, there are 453 included in the i386 folder by default. Although, I could be off by 30 files either way (comparing sp1 i386 to the extracted contents leads me to believe I can further remove another 26 files). Finally, where am I getting some of my files: So now I get the fun of actually replacing files with my dvd, then finally testing the opk. Prathapml, on the old msft powertoys, the svqn switches work fine, it's with the new powertoy. Give me one more day, and I should have a new DVD. Once again, thank. -

Fun stuff I tell you. My dosnet.inf has two [files], [OptionalSrcDirs], and [ForceCopyDriverCabFiles] And they appear to be coming from the /integrage:<path> option for kb840374 I guess msft's installer doesn't check for an updated dosnet.inf, nor svcpack.inf for that matter (I remember it over wrote my old svcpack.inf). As for my dosnet.inf, I install the patch(es), I extract conents, compare the files to see which are really in use/updated, then move the required files to my i386, and finally check my dosnet.inf to see if the file is already listed. If it ain't, I add it to the [files] and [force...] sections. Since I have a system running dx9, I used my above process for the contents of the opk. Once again, I'll be back, and thank you. PS: if we're going to diverge, there is a new msft tweakui powertoy. Anyone know of usable command switches? Have tried /q, /qb, /s /v/q(|n|b|!), but then again, my dosnet is messed up. Oh nevermind, one thing at a time. PPS: Thank you AMD for the download. I'm between vs 97 and vs .nyet right now. I have the software, just in the process of trying to get my xp correct first. -

Once again I'm back, and going to dissappear to try some more options. So let me start out once again by saying thank you. It appears this thread was about to diverge. I think my issue is with my original CD; however, this does not explain why dx 9 correctly when I double click dxsetup.exe. On a side note, I called up Msft and they agreed to ship me a new one for free. All retail/upgrade versions are entitled to get 1 free. When SP2 ships, I can get a new CD for $14.00 USD. Anyway, I'm going to get rid of my unattend and restore dosnet and see what happens. If I'm lucky, I get to attempt this 3 times a day (wake up/lunch/sleep). Actually...brb -

Well I made it back. Looks like there has been a little bit of activity since I've been burning and installing Thank you. I've downloaded the rar, and will attempt to install one more time. Although it may take me a little bit longer since I need to rebuild my xp install cd. I'm wondering if my issue is related to the fact I'm using sp1 and not sp1a. Let me ask, is anyone adjusting the dosnet.inf when slipping dx? I'm going to try the dx9ntopk 1st, then go for the coding; I don't suppose you could post the exe? Should be back in a day or so. I'm starting to think my master xp cd is corrupted. Thank you once again. -

I suppose I should mention, if I run dx9ntopk, or dxsetup without any switches, it runs fine. I've now replaced all the files in i386, updated my dosnet.inf, and I still can't get dx9 to intstall. I keep getting the same error, the files are not signed correctly. Finally, I think I changed one thing in the components section, and now I'm running quite the reduced Xp Pro (no msinfo in start menu, certain services have dissappeaerd, etc). Thank you for your help -

My unattend.txt, edit to make a little smaller -
Hello folks, I got a problem. My slipstream doesn't install directx 9.0b. Essentailly, my custom install always hangs during the DOS copy part for the following dll files: d3dim700, msvidctl, mswebdvd. When I go to install dx 9.0b with opk, winupdate, package switches, I get the common error message: this software has not passed windows testing ... Reviewing the dx log and setup error logs it stops at one of the files mentioned. Specifically, the logs state the files are not properly signed. Naturally I've placed start /wait sfc /scannow into several area's of my installation before the dx install. In replacing d3dim700, msvidctl, and mswebdvd I get prompted that msrating is no longer valid... I have a feeling I'm going to manual end up replacing dx one file at a time. I've modified dosnet.inf to force the copying of the dll's mentioned, but this is not really a solution. I've downloaded the end user redist from cnet and msft, and opk from oem.msft, edited dxsetup to eb w/o success in a silent install. I've placed dx9ntopk and the dxsetup+files into my svcpack.inf, $oem$ (cmdlines), and guirunonce without success. My question, what is different? Why can't I do a silent install? If I install dx without any switches, it installs fine. Otherwise, no go. Help, I know I'm doing something stupid. One more gem of info about my dx issue, I noticed in my event log that the hlp update has many dcom errors. Something about the help service starting with empty arguements. It was the first update msft released with the /integrate switch.
