  1. Hi Everyone, I'm new at using the Windows XP command prompt. Recently, I just learned how to create a text file containing a list of a directory's contents. I used this command "I:\>tree I:\ > list.txt" to create a text list of my music files in my I: partition. When I opened the list, I found that all the entries were listed such as : ÀÄÄÄAudio and Video ÀÄÄÄMy Music 10 , with each mp3 with the AAAA before each file. So my question is does anyone know what the "AAAA" means ? Thanks !
  2. Hi Everyone, I have the latest version of Nero 7 Ultra edition. When I update Nero 7 via their Product Setup, I find out that it does not remove older entries from the add-remove program tool list. The last time this happened, I uninstalled the older program , in add-remove, and it uninstalled the current Nero version , which I had to then re-install. I'm kind of sure Nero actually removed the older versions, but it did not remove the entry from the add-remove program list. I have 2-entries in my add-remove program list, both with different versions numbers. But the version number that is displayed in Nero Startsmart(version I'm using) is diiferent than both numbers in the add-remove program list. Also the 2 Nero entries in the add-remove program list both have different installer numbers. Does anyone know of a way I can remove the "orphaned" entries from the add-remove program list, without uninstalling the current version ? Thanks.
  3. Dear Nero support, I can't connect to the INTERNET database, during "save Tracks" with Nero 7.9.6.0 . However, I could connect to the INTERNET database with Nero 7.5.9.0A successfully. I have 3 boxes, on the "use INTERNET audio CD database" tab, which is in "options", "database".The boxes are - "read server (HTTP):" , "port" and "your e-mail address" . With Nero 7.5.9.0A I used "/~cddb/cddb.cgi" in the read server box, 80 in the port box and my e-mail address in that block. And I had a good connection to the database server. However, after updating to Nero 7.9.6.0, I had no connection with those settings or any other settings I tried. Also, with the older Nero 7 version, I had a"Nero is reading server box" appear when I clicked on access "INTERNET database". But that box does not appear with Nero 7's latest version. and the problem occurs with my firewall off or on. Your feedback on how I can correct this problem , with Nero 7.9.6.0 's INTERNET database connection will be appreciated. Also, I uninstalled/reinstalled Nero 7, so much, in trying to correct this problem, that I corrupted some of my .dll files and had to go to a Microsoft website to find how to fix my computer. So I'm counting on your help with this issue ! The above is a support form ( another one) I just submitted to the Nero support team. If anyone else is having the same problem, than please submit it too Nero support so this matter can be fixed!
  4. Hi Everyone, I have a Dell Dimension 4550, Windows XP SP2. Which came with a pre-installed dvd read only drive, SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-616T , fireware F310. On my machine I have Media Player 11, Nero 7. And I have other applications for backing up my dvds. Saturday I updated Nero 7 , and a back up application. Shortly, after those updates, I noticed that my Dell supplied Samsung dvd drive would no longer read certain dvds, while still readind others. Some retail, some burned. Funny thing was, just a few weeks ago the drive was reading the dvds that it would now fail to read. I would like to ask if anyone has any ideas on what could be causing the problem. Software conflicts, corrupted drivers, etc. And if the drive's drivers are corrupted, where can I get a driver update for this dvd drive? And, a 2nd question, I saw that the drive has one driver from a "sonic solutions" company. Does anyone know what software could have installed that specfic driver? The other 3 drivers are Microsoft drivers, on the Samsung dvd drive. Your feedback will be appreciated
  5. Hi Everyone, Can I use the computer administration tools that, come with XP pro, to create a new partition on my only HD . I wanted to install another operating system on the hard drive partition I would create. I know that there is 3rd party software that will partition a HD, but I wanted to inquire about ways a novice can safely partition and manage a partition with XP tools.
  6. Thanks for your reply ! You posted alot of good information and links.
  7. Hi Everybody, I have Norton Goback 4.0 installed on my only hard drive; which has XP pro for a operating system. As I'm interested in Linux, I was thinking of installing a 2nd hard drive with a Linux version for a operating system. Now, I know that Norton Goback 4.0 cannot be installed on any hard drive that has a dual boot windows/Linux OS system. However, if I add a 2nd hard drive, that has only Linux , could that still cause problems with Norton Goback? I'm asking this question because I've never had a computer with a 2nd hard drive. Would the two hard drives share any computer resources such as the MBR , which could cause conflicts between Linux and Goback? Or would the two hard drives be totally independent of each other ? Your feed back will be appreciated !
  8. Hi Everybody, I have a Dell Dimension 4550, XP pro, SP2 desktop. The other night, while working on my computer, there was a wheather related power-out. When the power came back on, I tried to restart my computer, it went to a screen that said Windows failed to start normally and gave me some options to restart Windows. I choose " Restart at the last know good configuration point", and Windows, did restart but with theis message on the screen : "Windows - Registry Recovery.... One of the files containing the system's registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternative copy. The recovery was sucessfull." My computer is running, and restarting but everytime it does restart, it displays the above message. After wading thru some microsoft knowledge base articles, I found one that shed some light on my problem : " How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from startingHow to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting" (Article ID : 307545) Although my computer is starting, it's not starting normally, which has me concerned. It's starting from registry restore points( not system restore points) in the system volume information folder. And system volume isn't aware of the previous registry restore points, so it creates a new restore point (without deleting the older points ; RP1, RP2, etc.) everytime the computer restarts. Some of these system volume restore points are up to 432 mb in size. In the microsoft article I refered to, it listed some fix it procedures that looked promising, but the article had a disclaimer that stated that some of the fix-it techniques would not work on OEM computer, which my DEll is. I think the disclaimer my have been refering to using the Windows Recovery Console , but I'm uncertain. It did warn that using the Recovery Console, with these techniques could make a OEM computer unstartable. I don't know if it is safe to delete some of the old system volume registry restore points either. If I keep on restarting my computer, with it's current system start up confiuration, I may have my entire harddrive filled up with system volume registry restore points! If anyone can share some repair procedures I may use, it would be greatly appreciated . Thank you!
  9. Hi Everyone, I just downloaded the: firefox-1.5.0.1-en-US plug in for Bart Pe. I saved the pug in this folder : C:\pebuilder3110a\plugin . My question is : Is there a specfic plug in folder, in the Bart plug in directory, for this plug in to be stored prior to starting the build process? Thanks!
  10. Hi Everybody, Last Saturday I downloaded/installed Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 , because the "nLite" autostreamer program required net 2.0 to run correctly. Everything went good, "nLite" worked and I had no computer problems. However, when I run Norton Windoctor, or norton one button check up I recieve program error messages such as "net framework\v 2.0.5o727\vbc.exe cannot access a necessary file "Msvcr80.dll". There are also 9 other messages saying other net 2.0 .exe files cannot access the Msvcr80.dll file. When I attempt to have norton repair these problems, norton fails to fix them. I went to a microsoft web page about net 2.0 (kbtshoot kbhowtomaster KB908077) and I used 2 of the listed repair techniques, which went without a problem, but my Norton utlities are still displaying the same error messages. But I'm having no computer problems , other than the Norton error messages. So my question is : Do I have a serious problem with net 2.0 , and if so what can I do about it? Or does the msvcr80.dll file even belong in the net framework 2.0 folder? I'm asking this question because I know next to nothing about the net framework. Thanks!
  11. Hi Everybody, I just downloaded Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 , then "nlite" software ( http://www.nliteos.com/guide/ ) and on the frist attempt Nlite successfully slipstreamed a SP2.exe file into my Dell OEM Windows install disc ! ( by success I mean that their were both a SP2.cab file and a win51ip.sp2 file in the slipstreamed file ) This was after a lot of failures using "Autostreamer" , Bart Pe and using run commands to integrate the install/update files. This made me very happy that my attempts wre finnally successfull! This success came from using different software ( nlite) but I wonder if using the Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 in the background (instead of Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 ) also contributated to the successfull slipstream ? Any ideas? Thanks again for all your helpfull replies!
  12. Hi Everybody, I have had many unsucessfull attempts with integrating my Dell OEM Windows install disc with the SP2 updates. I have tried Autostreamer, Bart Pe and a run line command to attempt integration without any sucess. By sucess I mean the "finished product" showing either SP2.cab files or WIN51IP.SP2 files. Is there any chance nlite would work when the other methods didn't? Has anyone had any experience with that? One more question : Why does nlite require a microsoft net frame work update to 2.0, if I have the 1.1 net version on my computer? Are there any potential problems from going to 2.0 framework from a 1.1 framework? Thanks!
  13. opps................, I forgot about that one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  14. Hi Everybody, I read this quote from a post concerning Bart PE ..... "Bart PE is for rescueing PC system who's hard disk is not damaged or corrupted beyond repair, and rescuing any data on the hard disk." Which brings to mind a couple of general questions about Bart PE I would like to ask before investing a lot of time "studying up" on Bart PE . How could Bart PE be used for... " rescuing any data on the hard disk." ? From some of my readings about Bart PE, I got the impression that one Bart PE advantage is it "speeds up" Windows install process for multiple computers on a network. So is Bart PE "geared" torwards use on a computer network , or does Bart PE have advantages for a single computer use ? A friend of mine, who is a lot more computer "knowledgeable" than I , says he already is familar with Windows Install and disc repair methods , "wants to know what Bart PE could do, or do better than , other install, disc repair or data recovey techniques" ? Your feedback on these questions will be appreciated !!!
  15. where could I go to download these versions?
  16. Hi Everyone, I have never used Linux but I'm curious about it. Someone told me that there is a test drive version of Linux that can be ran from a disc in a cd/dvd drive, without installing Linux on my hard drive. Does anyone have any info about this? Feed back will be appreciated.
