  1. I have never had any problems with Windows Automatic up-dates before , but in the last month, the auto up-date process has suddenly started eating so much of my RAM that my computer becomes non-responsive. I didn't know what was causing the memory usage problem at 1st , but when I disabled Windows Automatic up-date the problem stopped. Windows Auto up-date would start to eat up memory when I brought my computer out of Standby or after a system re-start. Does anyone have any ideas why Windows Auto up-date would suddenly start to eat up all of my memory ? My system is a Win XP Pro SP3 computer . Thanks.
  2. Thanks for all of your replies. I contacted Yahoo , and they replied that someone had probably harvested my yahoo e-mail address from another person's computer. Someone who had malware on their computer , which enabled the spammer's to harvest my e-mail address from the other person's Yahoo address book.
  3. Hi Everyone, A few weeks back , I started receiving a-lot of notices concerning failed e-mail delivery attempts, that some how were sent using my Yahoo e-mail address. I never sent any of these message , nor do I know how or who sent them. Some of the attended Recipients had hot-mail accounts , some live-mail and other e-mail accounts. I changed my Yahoo password , but the failed e-mail delivery notices keep appearing in my Yahoo mail Inbox. Today I ran both a anti-virus and anti-spyware scans , on my WinXP Pro SP3 computer. The Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware came up with 2 cases of the Pup.Malware.tool on my computer , and my Avira AntiVir Personal came up with 2 cases of the TR/Drop.Softomat.AN being in my System Restore directory. All were Quarantined . I ran the scan just a few hours ago. I don't know if these malware/Trojans had anything to do with my Yahoo problem. I have never had this problem before , so I wanted to ask what steps I can take to deal with the problem of someone else using Yahoo e-mail address. I'm pasting below the text report I received following my last notice of a failed e-mail delivery attempt from my Yahoo e-mail account........... "Return-Path: <leoliver@yahoo.com> Received: from web192c0.megawebservers.com (web192c0.megawebservers.com [216.251.35.192]) by mailrelay3.megamailservers.com (8.13.6/8.13.1) with ESMTP id o0MMWkgY021287; Fri, 22 Jan 2010 17:32:46 -0500 Received: from localhost (beachavenuemedical.com@localhost [127.0.0.1]) by web192c0.megawebservers.com (8.13.6/8.12.6/SuSE Linux 0.6) with SMTP id o0MMWXEX011691; Fri, 22 Jan 2010 17:32:34 -0500 From: <leoliver@yahoo.com> To: <alain.heuze@wanadoo.fr>, <alain.heurtel@wanadoo.fr>, <alain.heulet@wanadoo.fr>, <alain.heuninck@wanadoo.fr> Subject: Aware of V-pilule advantages? 4. Hi Everyone, I have a friend with Windows Home Edition SP3 , on his Sony computer. He is infected by MS antispyware 2009 , and a pop up window appeared telling him he had to restart his computer ,because he had just installed new hard- ware and the software with the new hard ware wouldn't work right unless the computer was rebooted. But he never had installed new hard ware , but he went ahead and restarted because he thought a restart my remove the MS antispyware 2009 pop ups. But after restarting he was unable to log on his user settings. After Windows rebooted , his log on screen appeared and when he clicked on his "Log On Icon" his desktop wall paper would appear but no desktop icons. But then the log on process stopped and Windows starting logging him off. And no matter how many times he restarted, and tried to log on , the result was the same , logging on went immediately to log off. I tried to go to the boot menu , by holding down F8 during the restart process , but the boot menu screen would appear for just a second and the restart process continued to boot into Windows. He had a Norton Anti-virus CD , which I inserted and restarted and his system read the Norton disc. After booting to the Norton CD , I ran a scan which only scanned the MBR and it said that the MBR was clean. And I couldn't see how to boot to Safe mode on his system . I tried holding down either F11 or F12 , but in neither case did the option to boot to Safe Mode appear. Or what options do I have since MS antispyware 2009 prevents anyone from logging on the computer? Feedback will be appreciated ! Thanks.
  5. Thanks for your help with this issue.
  6. So far , I've downloaded this file : DirectX 9.0c End-User Runtime AddOn - 0.5.1 (August 2008) , now RyanVM web-page says something about this file : DirectX for Managed Code AddOn - 1.0.0a . I use .net 2.0 , but I'm not going to attempt to add .net 2.0 to my nlite build as it seems to complicated. I will add the .net 2.0 after doing a Windows install with my nlite build. The only .net in my nlite build , is whatever default .net version is in the SP3 service pack. So do I need to include DirectX for Managed Code AddOn - 1.0.0a in my nlite build ? And one more question , do I need to add this file : DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer , to my nlite build? Thanks!
  7. Thanks for the tip ! I downloaded both files.
  8. Hi Everyone, Is direct x 9.0 included in the SP3 service pack ? So further files would or would not be needed in the nlite build to achive direct x in a Windows install? Also, is there a simple way to include WMP 11 in a nlite build? Thanks!!
  9. Personally i have removed this since anybody who uses it will have their own drivers for it so its rather out of date now i would say (with a fair bit of confidence) that you can get rid of it with no problems (i sure aint come across any so far) Hope this helps. Stoner81 Thanks for your reply. It it's not needed, and removing it causes no problems , then I will remove it on my next nlite build.
  10. Hi Everyone, I'm building a new nlite build , from my Win XP Pro SP3 computer . In the components folder , I have a folder called Tablet PC. I left Tablet PC in my last nlite build , because I was not certain of what function it performs. I'm UN-certain of what tablet PC even is ! Is tablet PC a different operating system version of Win XP ? I don't want my system to be a different XP version. So should I remove tablet PC from my nlite builds ? And would removing tablet PC take away any text writing, or editing functions in a XP install? Thanks.
  11. Hi Everyone, Do I need to UN-install a older version of nlite before updating to the latests version of nlite? Or will the new version simply replace the older one ? Thanks !
  12. Hi Everyone, I just ran Secunia PSI (RC3) personal software inspector , version vo.9.0.4 , https://psi.secunia.com/ , and they reported that the 7z.exe file , which comes with the nlite program files , is "This installation of 7-Zip 4.x is insecure and potentially exposes your system to security threats!" and also "Secunia strongly recommends that you update this program by installing the update that is provided by the vendor of this program. " I thought I would share this info with everyone. I use and like nlite , but I'm uncertain if my installation of nlite would work properly if I deleted the 7z.exe file, that was installed with nlite and replaced it with the current version of 7z.exe , which is 7z. exe 4.57 , and a beta version 4.58 . Any comments ?
  13. Hi Everyone, Thanks for all your replies, I'll be thinking them over for a while. I'm learning a lot about computers that I wasn't previously aware of . But after reading over my post 's replies , I have another question ............ What is the legal definition of a computer ? The motherboard for instance ? If I had to change my computer's motherboard , would I legally have a "new" computer ? Thanks .
  14. I thought it was legal to transfer Windows product to a 2nd computer, if you re-registered Windows with Microsoft and if Windows was only on one computer . But I'm not a lawyer either.......... Anyways, you raised a good point . I'll do some research and post my answer.
  15. Hi Everyone, I have my original Dell WinXPPro SP1a reinstall disk that was shipped with my Dell Dimension 4550 computer . Which I have used with nlite many times to create both SP2 or SP3 slipstreamed disk's. Recently someone told me that a OEM reinstall disk is "locked to" the manufacturer's Motherboard , and couldn't be used for a Windows reinstall if I had to replace my Dell computer with another brand . So can nlite be used to create a slipstreamed reinstall disk , that could be used on any brand of computer ? Thanks .
  16. Thanks for your reply, I'll start another nlite build and I'll select "prompt repair" instead of default .
  17. Hi Everyone, After test booting to my latest nlite build , the usual "Welcome to Setup" screen didn't show , along with the three options : "To Setup Windows XP now, press enter" , "To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R" and "To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3" . Instead it went directly to a screen that displayed my HD partitions and asked which one I wanted to install XP on. This isn't what I wanted because I used a nlite SP2 build to perform a repair install before , and I want the option again. The repair install I used was the version (not from recovery console) , but the one available after I select "To Setup Windows XP now, press enter" . But it looked like the booted disk went straight to a full install screen. On this build I slipstreamed my DELL SP1 install disk, with the SP3 update , and then only selected the "unattended option " . On the unattended option I chose "provide defaults" for the unattended mode , and for computer type I chose "automatic" . I selected no other build options , such as "tweaks" or "options" , on this build. Which may have been a mistake ? Thanks !
  18. Which brings another question to mind , Ryanvm's web-site lists a "post SP2" hotfix package , but wouldn't the SP3 update contain all the hotfixs released since SP2 ? Is a post SP3 hotfix package available ? Thanks .
  19. Thanks for your reply , it was very informative , and I read it several times . I was concerned about this issue because I never integrated drivers, or hotfixs on the nlite XpSp2 build I made last year. I did successfully use that build for a repair install of Windows. But never a full install . After reading your reply , I don't think I will integrate anything (except for my Windows product key in the unattended section ) in my SP3 slipstream build . If I will have a bootable install of Windows , with just the SP3 update , than I could easily add device drivers , hotfixs later after a install of Windows is up and going. Thanks again for your reply , about 2 weeks ago I posted a question on this forum and received no replies , which kind of disappointed me . So I'm glad that my last post was answered.
  20. Hi Everyone, When I selected to integrate some of my .inf driver files, I came to my C:\DRIVERS\SYSTEM folder which contained about 6 .inf driver files. Nlite told me I only needed to select 1 file , from that driver folder, because they would all be integrated . After completing the build process, the LAST SESSION.INI file only showed the 1st .inf file, from my C:\DRIVERS\SYSTEM folder . So my question is , where are the 5 other .inf driver files , from my C:\DRIVERS\SYSTEM folder, that were also supposed to be included in the nlite build ? Or as a newbie , did I make a mistake in my build process? Feed back will be appreciated ! P.S. My computer is a Dell Dimension 4550 computer, with WinXP Pro , SP3 .
  21. Hi Everyone, I have my original Dell WinXP Sp1a reinstall disk, that was shipped with my computer , that already had Windows XP Pro installed. And the product key is found on a sticker on my computer's case. When I recently used the nlite program, to slipstream my original install disk, with the SP3 update , I noticed that nlite displayed a different product key number, for the slipstreamed build. Which brings me to ask, if I should manually input the original product key into the slipstreamed build , or does each progressive service pack update have a different product key number , than prior service pack builds ? This is very important , because if a incorrect product key number is inputed into the slipstream build , it would fail to reinstall Windows when needed. Thanks ! -- your friend, Larry
  22. Thanks .
  23. Hi Everyone, Last year I used a previous version of nlite to slipstream my Dell OEM SP1 Winxp Pro install disc with SP2 . It worked great , which I was very pleased about because all other slip streaming methods failed for me . Now I'm working on using nlite to slipstream the same Dell install disc with SP3 . But I'm wondering if more hotfix's and updates are needed in the slipstream , because I understood that SP3 contained all the updates and hotfix's that Microsoft issued up until the release of SP3 . Would I still have to include additional updates and hotfix's along with the SP3 .exe file ? Feedback will be appreciated !
  24. Thanks for your replies !
