Here's a very elegant way to replace Notepad by Notepad++ Notepad Replacement : http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/commun...auncher.bin.zip Installation Instruction: * Backup your original Notepad.exe (we never know...). * Copy notepad.exe which comes with this package into 4 directories (in given order) : 1. c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386 2. c:\windows\system32\dllcache 3. c:\windows\system32 4. c:\windows When you replace notepad.exe in c:\windows\system32 and c:\windows, a "Windows File Protection" message box appears, click Cancel. Then another message box appears, click OK. * Modify you registry (if you use installer to install your Notepad++, you don't need to do this step): Create key \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Notepad++, then add your Notepad++ full path as the default value of this key. In my case, it's C:\Program Files\Notepad++. Now Notepad++ is your default Notepad. I make a point of thanking Stépho for his contribution.
  5. K, this is a bit weird. But I've to manually press F5 to see any changes ie, if i delete a file or create a new file, I've to refresh it manually before I see the change. How do i rectify this? Thx...
  6. Will the following approach work? Use a notepad++ installation. Rename Notepad++.exe to notepad.exe. Use makecab (or anything else for that matter) to make a notepad.ex_ Replace original notepad.ex_ in i386 with this If not, why? Thx
  7. hey gosh, u're active. cool, i wanted to ask some questions to u in particular... i read ur guide to slimming down xp, followed it and it works. Here's what i did. Used nlite to remove all crap retaining manual install and upgrade then i used ur method to get a boot menu giving 2 options : unattended install and normal install (with recovery console). for the unattended one, i used wihu from cmdlines.txt. when wihu is called at T-12, i want to use hidcon. Where do i place it such that it can be used? I tried placing it in AUTO (that's what i'm calling the boot folder for unattended). doesn't work
  8. I put notepad.exe in remove files list and it worked. Can't find notepad now. XP is running. But at the start, i saw an error : something abt ie4uinit.exe and advpack.dll. Haven't seen it b4. Not sure if it's related to this or not.

I run WIHU from cmdlines.txt at T-12 with ".\WIHU\wihu.exe /AutoInstall=60 /Beep=15 /SkipRestart /NoRestartChange" When it starts, in the first screen, It shows me logged in as "SYSTEM" and New User name and password are greyed out. I can't create a new user here. However, in the second screen I can. How can I create a new user in the 1st screen itself?
  10. oh, i didn't know it'd have such serious implications. anyway, i tried replacing notepad with notepad2 by doing modifype and makecab and it works fine. I wanted to replace notepad with notepad++ cos it offers so much better functionality than the vanilla flavoured notepad . Also i never use notepad. Isn't that possible u say?

  14. Hi, i want to perform silent install of applications in WIHU. I've done it in RunOnceEx and WPI too and i know the required switches. However, with WIHU, i'm facing a prob which says file not found. For eg, to install Notepad++, i use these lines in 'install.ini' description.1 = Notepad++ command.1 = "%WIHU%\Install\Utilities\nppinstaller4.5.exe\" /S and i get an error saying file not found. Even changing it to command.1 = "\"%WIHU%\Install\Utilities\nppinstaller4.5.exe\" /S" doesn't work. However, upon removing /S it works. command.1 = "%WIHU%\Install\Utilities\nppinstaller4.5.exe" I can't perform silent installs. Can someone pls help me?
  15. I want to know what are the different methods to reduce the size of source. This is what I do 1. Use nLite to remove components (this reduces from 570MB to 270MB). I preserve 'Manual Install and Upgrade' to faciliate "2" 2. Use Gosh's method. I use this primarily to be able to use the recovery console. I do this by setting up a dual-boot, one with unattended install, the other without. However, contrary to what Gosh claims, i see Copying Files in GUI mode as well. Am i doing something wrong? Are there any other methods to reduce size?
  16. During driver install, a dialog pops up called Plug and Play Monitor found. Installation stops there and doesn't proceed unless i click on cancel. Didn't face this prob earlier. Mostly this is due to integrating SP3, RC1. Can someone confirm?
  17. Start off with RunOnceEx. There isn't much difference between BatchScripting and RunOnceEx cept that the latter looks neater. Once you get the hang of it (and all the switches for silent install too) then you can try WPI, WIHU or XPlode which are a bit more intricate. For silent install, there's a topic entirely devoted to it. If that too isn't enough try searching the net. I hope that helps. Out of curiosity...what all did you remove to make it 170MB?

  21. If WIHU is present in \$OEM$\WIHU and the applications are present in \Install with the root folder being the CD, how do i specify the relative paths?
