  1. Hey, little update, ive managed to sort it out, i simply added a A record, to my hosts IP address, my host, (hostgator). asked me if i planned to host the mailing server myself, i declined, but is that possible, if i was to use exchange server, can i get it to issue email address' using my @domain.com name?

    Ethan :)

  2. Ethan, is this related to this thread?

    http://www.msfn.org/board/domain-name-t143083.html

Has it happens no its not, Basically the no-ip issue is not that important, its just a nuicance bacause i bought a second domain for the no-ip purpose, this issue is that basically if i go to my browser and type in domain.com it will not allow me to access my website, because i beleive it thinks im trying to access the domain? :S

    Does this make sence?

Thanks, for your continued help lol.

    Ethan :)

  3. You can create an A record for "www" to the external IP address, and for any other external resource you want to access from the network.

    How big is your domain?

The Domain is has only got 1 Server and 3 Clients, its a work related domain controller, i don't beleive i have a fixed IP address with my Web Host.

  4. Hello,

A Slight problem, basically I own a Domain name, which is hosting our company website, say for example domain.com

And my Server/DC has the Domain name of domain.com

So when i try and access my website, my webmail etc, i just simply get page cannot be displayed, is there an easy way of resolving this, without having to reconfigure the server/DC?

    Thanks,

    Ethan :)

  5. so can I just use normal SDRAM in the machine?

Well, most likely not desktop-style "plain" PC133, more like plain ECC registered PC133 SDRAM (that would be fairly "plain" as far as servers go). Sorry for not being clear enough.

So is that cheap enough then, bare in mind i live in the UK, so US Postage is stupidly priced. :(

  6. The DNS settings on your physical computer should be the ones for your ISP. The DNS Settings for the domain are in your godaddy.com control panel.

Yea, but do i need to add any forwaders or anything else in my DNS Server to accept connection, (the Machine i want to rdp is my ad, dns, dhcp server) because when i RDP/VPN my domain name, with it forwarded to no-ip's address nothing happens.

  7. Yeah, the only reason I thought it was RDRAM was because it needed to be in pairs. Prior to Dual-Channel technology, RDRAM was the only type to my knowledge that had such a requirement. The fact that there is 168pin SDRAM PC133 AND 168pin RDRAM PC800 (for use on 133MHz FSB) adds to the confusion. However, we can easily do a comparison now as to what memory you actually need.

This page has a picture of RDRAM 168pin:

    http://www.amazon.co...E/dp/B0000A58OS

Main things to notice is the location of the notches (or the keying) of the edge (no pun intended) connector. These are in a different place than the memory from the ebay auction. Also, (again to my knowledge) all RDRAM has heat spreaders on them, because of the speed they run at. Only premium SDRAM came with heat spreaders.

You should be able to compare the pictures to the memory in your computer to see where the notches are, and which type you actually have.

No it isnt the ones on the amazon page, it is just standard SDRAM by the looks of things, they have no heat spreaders, and the notches are further apart than the image, by alot too. But the Server case, insists the Machine requires them in pairs, other wise it won't boot, just get the beeping from the bios speaker then.

  8. You are making me curious with all this RDRAM talk. I don't see how it's even related to his server, I figured I must be missing something.

About the RAM costing more, well, old computers are like that. Older parts cost more, and the computer ain't worth a whole lot either being so old (P3 era). It's a good part of why I don't stick with older stuff, it always ends up costing more than it should (doubly so for servers). Pretty much everything this old box can do, can easily be done with a virtual machine.

Dell PowerEdge 2550 Technical Specifications, for those who might want to peek. It lists RAM as being plain old ECC registered PC133 SDRAM.

Yea, its purely used as a DC, DNS and DHCP, nothing more, but its a waste of a machine, when everything in it works perfect bar the memory, so can I just use normal SDRAM in the machine? Sorry I'm more of a software person as a posed to hardware.

  9. You missed my point - DCs go into a separate OU from the rest of the machines (by default), so making sure it's actually applying to that OU is a good start. This is one of the many reasons to use GPMC exclusively for creation and application of GPOs, rather than using the policies on servers or the DCs directly.

In the GPMC it says only the Default Domain controller policy is applied. But i dont want to apply a GPO, i need to apply the 'Domain Controller Security Policy' in the Administrative tools folder. Didn't think i could apply a security policy via a GPO

I've also tried to enforce the policy, but nothing has changed. forced update, and still nothing.

  11. At what level in the AD tree did you apply the policy? If you look at it in GPMC, where is it being applied? You might want to link it directly to the domain controllers OU.

The DC that's not receiving the update is the only DC in the Tree, one DC, One tree, one forest.

So the domain controller security policy only needs to be applied to one machine, and that's the DC!

Which is where the security policy is being set.

  12. Above is true (I have a no-ip "free domain name" yada-yada.no-ip.xxx). You need the DUX running on the dynamic-ip-Server. Also, don't forget about any "blockages" in your server's Firewall and/or your Router (have to Port Forward in the Router with a Fixed IP to my server). The DUX updates (at no-ip) my dynamic-IP (assigned by the ISP) adn in the router I port-forward (80) to the Fixed IP. Still battling with this stupid Symantec Firewall; ready to use built-in methods and toss it... Although when "stealth" is off it seems to work, and depends on my Rules instead (just like a "normal firewall").

Can't elaborate more than that. Your scenario is a "domain name" via "godaddy", so I can't say how the IP works with that (is it the same deal as "free domain" as is in mine and simply "points" to your server? No Clue!). I got mine (as I example'd) from No-IP (just a "pointer").

Well, i can get to the server using the no-ip host easy, just type the host into the RDP box, same goes for the IP, i can simply type in the IP and its connected. Just don't know if i need to change the DNS to no-ips DNS servers as a posed to the godaddy ones, and if i need to edit anything in my dns server settings!

  13. Yea the server offers RAID, so that clears that one up,

    it is 168 pin memory.

I live in the UK, so the postage on those items is steep.

Shame you cant use normal SDRAM, because i've got loads of it laying around!

ive just looked inside the machine im using to type this up on, and it takes 2x256Mb, 168Pin SDRAM memory.

isit worth sticking them in the server? or do i run the risk of ruining the sticks/motherboard?

  14. Well first off, can you RDP via your current IP address? It also looks like their service works by a program running on the server that keeps in contact with this no-ip service, so that it knows your current IP to assign your domain to. Have you also tried an nslookup for your domain? I don't know how you would do this. The DNS is not kept on your server, it is kept on no-ip's name servers I imagine. Have you tried contacting them?

Yea i can RDP my current IP address, well i have DNS installed on my DC, but the DNS server i use to browse the net is my ISPs DNS. no-ip want me to buy a domain name off them, or transfer an existing one, which i can only do after six months, I thought it could just simply be forwarded to the no-ip host name/server ip, but that just doesn't seem to work.

  15. 1) I'm not sure at all this will fix your problem.

    2) Dell has Bios upgrades that run under Windows or even a BartPE/WinPE.

Just Done a memtest, and im getting failures every other second, so i'm assuming its the memory thats faulty. But it costs more me to replace the memory that what the server is worth, waste of a server really! :(

Hmmm... let me put things together... memory needs to be in pairs... replacement memory costs more than the system... this sounds like my old computer! Which used first-gen RAMBUS where 2x1GB sticks cost about $700 last I checked! Its a little cheaper now I think as time goes on but I have already moved on away from that (except I still have that system) now my main PC uses DDR2. :sneaky:

Yea the server uses 4x512Mb sticks, requires them in pairs, The stick reads: PC133R-333-542-82

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Dell-Poweredge-2550-Memory-RAM-512MB-PC133R-SDRAM_W0QQitemZ300356084581QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_Networking_SM?hash=item45ee9e2365#ht_1638wt_964

Bare in mind the server set me back £30, so the memory will work out as more.

Just don't understand how it can run faultless for months on end, then all of a sudden, decide to stop.

It also has a 128Mb Base memory i think its called, installed, which i next to the RAM Modules, don't understand what that is for either.

  16. Well, run gpresult /z to see what's actually being applied, and perhaps use GPMC to do an RSOP to see what settings are actually being applied (and by which policy), and go from there.

It seems to think the security policy is applied to the domain controller, when it isn't.

At this point I'm stuck. It's being applied to clients, but not the DC. Don't understand it.

  17. Hello,

i need to use no-ip's service because my ISP will not offer a static IP, so last night I bought a domain name, domain.info for example, to use to connect to my server via RDP/VPN, now when i forward it to my no-ip host name it won't connect, nor will it connect if i forward it to my servers ip. is there anything i need to do to the DNS setting on my Domain Controller, no-ip host, or domain host (godaddy).

    Thanks

    Ethan

  18. I don't really understand what you're trying to do but here are generic gpo diagnose steps:

    - Check if the gpo is really applied on the right computer/user.

    - launch gpupdate /force on the target computer then gpresult should show which gpo have been applied.

    Generic tips:

    - use loopback when more than one gpo is applied on the same target.

    - disable slow link detection.

The Security policy has been applied to the clients, with the gpupdate /force command, however the domain controller is not updating itself, its not letting users log in interactively/through terminal server. even though the required info has been filled out.

gpupdate /force doesn't seem to do anything on the actual domain controller.
