  1. Update: I now work in a corporate environment, so I have access to a lot of hardware for testing purposes. I decided to include both a full featured Designer and a minimalistic Designer Shell (for scripting purposes) in this project. I will be testing features on the Shell and adding them onto the Designer forms when they work properly.
  2. Post 11 - the Windows Home Server I used to make that part of the tutorial does not support properly BusLogic SCSI. Post 24 - I've recently migrated my virtual machines on a Datacenter Server x64 host, so I will investigate more on this subject. I am also interested in a Domain Controller guest machine migration from virtual to physical hardware. Post 45 - There's this topic that covers the problem. As for the pictures, I think I will use my own web server to store them from now on.
  3. I've heard about June 27th... a grand release with Visual Studio 2008, SQL 2008 , Server 2008 RTM, Vista SP1 and XP SP3, something like that.
  4. If all you really need is to transfer files, mount the VMDK while offline in your physical machine and copy your stuff in there. The only reason to include VMware Tools would be for deployment on both physical machines and ESX Server.
  5. it might, if you make sysprep scan the NLDRV folder. But I haven't tested that with non-PnP drivers due to lack of actual hardware to experiment on.
  6. I did, and the problems are solved, nLite doesn't screw up sysprep functionality anymore
  7. True, if I were just making it smaller, but I also intend to establish the layout of components that could be removed by vLite in the future. If I use a smaller subset of functionality, I'd be neglecting some components that are Enterprise specific.
  8. This is the session that I used at this point on the 3 distros: ; vLite preset file [Information] Version = 1.1 beta on 2.0.50727.1378 Microsoft Windows NT 5.2.3790 Service Pack 2 Target = Windows Longhorn SERVERENTERPRISE 32-bit [Compatibility] [Components] ;# Languages # Japanese Korean Simplified Chinese Traditional Chinese ;# System # Manual Install (Setup.exe) Windows Easy Transfer [Options] DEP (Data Execution Prevention) = Disabled (AlwaysOff) Memory requirement = 256MB Show hidden files and folders = Yes Show extensions for known file types = Yes [Protection] [Drivers] [Unattended] SkipNewUser SkipAutoActivation [Hotfixes] [LanguagePacks] After which I have: - Enterprise, 1.32 GB ISO, 4.84 GB uncompressed image - Enterprise Core, 334 MB ISO, 1.04 GB uncompressed image - Starter, 1.54 GB ISO, 5.67 GB uncompressed image - Ultimate, not yet relevant for this process at the moment Note: If you want to diff you should always do it between distros built on the same codebase, in my case NT 6.0.6001.16659.070916-1443, used in Windows Server 2008 RC0 and Windows Vista SP1. Otherwise you'd end up doing binary comparison between executable code with different builds and same names. I have the 3 WIMs mounted as read only and use WinMerge 2.6 to compare them. I'd recommend using RAID-0 striped partitions for this task, as it is very disk-intensive. Also make sure the WIMs are not fragmented before mounting them to ensure optimal read-ahead buffering (Server 2003 is the most suited environment for this). 1) Files that can be found in Core and not in non-Core will most likely be the ocsetup-related packages that are not affected by the way vLite interacts with Server 2008. - in this case, different binary files with same size / same binary files with different dates are not relevant - the expected files with different size and contents are: GlobalInstallOrder.xml and ServerEnterprise.xml. The rest are logs or garbage. After discarding these, generate a tab-separated report. The result is this: a) folders - point out what is unique in core architecture Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-a..ations-sc.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.16659_en-us_1cebb6b1d2f624fa Activation Service next, as it's a fundamental package for a lot of server functionality and it worked ok. Makes me wonder even more why Codename Viridian is flagged as "not working" on Core. Probably missing dependencies, but I'll find out soon enough. So go for it: start /w ocsetup WAS-WindowsActivationService and check again with oclist when it completes. Note: you may want to transfer files to the VM. The best way in this scenario is this: 1) use hostname to find out the current name of the computer 2) use netdom renamecomputer <oldname> /newname:<newname> . because the \\Win-xxxx is crap 3) use net share <sharename>=c:\ to share the entire partition 4) eventually mount it in the physical computer as a drive letter. Assumptions at this point: - Languages removal doesn't break Server Core functionality and removes 1/3 of total size. Does it break Server non-Core? Core install footprint is down to 1.04 GB - Server Core functionality contains unique packages, not present on non-Core. Can they be discovered by diffing? - Are there any leftovers that should be included in the Languages component, not present in Vista RTM ? Course of action: - remove Languages from Enterprise non-Core and test the result. - remove next testing candidates: Manual Install, Windows Easy Transfer from both Core and non-Core - diff the result (non-Core Lite) to my current Core Lite and post the unique files in Core. - split the diff result into several packages and identify matching registry data
  10. The advantage of 1 GB of data: this finishes very fast So I stopped the VM, removed the CD-ROM and went back to 256 MB of memory. Windows bug present here: they removed the console logo with Windows Vista So you can see here what are the default services running after first boot: And now, the essential part: vLite does not appear to corrupt oclist.exe functionality: Adding or removing the Active Directory role with OCSetup.exe is not supported. It can leave your server in an unstable state. Always use DCPromo to install or uninstall Active Directory. =========================================================================== Microsoft-Windows-ServerCore-Package Not Installed:BitLocker 11. And now the fun part of testing... As I suspected, the 256 MB fix doesn't work properly (hopefully at least on VMware), probably due to more memory requirements by the setup. You can see the error here: Windows Installation encountered an unexpected error. Verify that the installation sources are accessible, and restart the installation. [b]Error Code: 0xE00000100[/b] To get to the product key I had to raise the memory of the VM to 320 MB
  12. Diffing the changes vLite made for Languages has reduced the footprint of the WIM contents from 1.54 GB to 1.04 GB, and the rebuilt ISO is now 449 MB. Here is what has been removed, somebody should confirm if these are all the files that should have been removed at this stage (I doubt somebody extensively tested vLite on Core) Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.16659_none_09328d3ac76aa5d0\GlobalInstallOrder.xml Edit: can somebody confirm that this is actually what the Languages component was supposed to remove? Next I will proceed with diffing the registry and checking if more files should be included in this component. There may be differences from results obtained on Vista RTM, my goal at this stage is to further refine the Languages Component removal.
  13. I decided today to try to minimize even more my vLited Vista by using a more unusual method: hand diffing against the Server 2008 Core. My future application will probably benefit from the results I've gathered, but until then, hopefully with some work from nuhi, we might see them sooner in a next version of vLite. Windows Server 2008 RC0 - Enterprise Core (build 6.0.6001.16659.070916-1443) Last Session: ; vLite preset file [Information] Version = 1.1 beta on 2.0.50727.1378 Microsoft Windows NT 5.2.3790 Service Pack 2 Target = Windows Longhorn SERVERENTERPRISECORE 32-bit [Compatibility] [Components] ;# Languages # Japanese Korean Simplified Chinese Traditional Chinese [Options] DEP (Data Execution Prevention) = Disabled (AlwaysOff) Memory requirement = 256MB Show hidden files and folders = Yes Show extensions for known file types = Yes [Protection] [Drivers] [Unattended] SkipNewUser [Hotfixes] [LanguagePacks] Note: please be patient, I am updating this topic as I progress with the trials. Suggestions are welcome. Note 2: in this case, the actual minimal requirements for Core is 256 MB of memory (unlike Vista), but Microsoft did not bother to reduce the limit in setup. I did it with vLite.
  14. Well, this is more of a long-term project and although I may have the adequate skills to perform modification operations on windows, building a storage abstraction database is not as straightforward as I thought. So it's quite normal for a pre-alpha project to go unnoticed.
  15. Is there something keeping you from changing it after installation?
  16. The implementation may be the same, true, but if I were to code a new setup routine to install the OS from 7z it would take a lot more work. WIM is already optimal for programatic control. And let's not discard the fact that WIM technology could be the best piece of software Microsoft did in the last 10 years . And unlike WIM and VMDK formats, Symantec hasn't taken too many steps towards publishing specs for theirs.
  17. 1) Yes, you can unzip files to a non empty partition, but that's just the easy part. You can't mount a 4 Gb 7z archive as a NTFS junction and service it offline. You have no integrity checking when capturing over network. The 7z algorithm is suitable just for heavy packing / unpacking, the LZX algoritm is suitable for more precise purposes like this one. And the SDK for WIM technology is freeware too. 2) WIM technology also allows easy diffing / differential packaging, suitable for Embedded purposes. A componentized XP / Vista will benefit the most from this type of packaging, due to the very efficient system of single instance storage. Each package would contain the entire file dependencies for the executables, but add only a little header to the entire WIM file. I am studying the posibilities of this method now, and it seems even more promicing. Let's say I were to divide the OS in several hundred packages, out of which only a handful were really critical, and the user would choose at setup time what functionality is needed. WinFLP was the first attempt towards this goal, but I don't see Microsoft adopting the style anytime soon 3) The limitations in this procedure are caused by the PE-based setup, not by the WIM. When I will have available something like Symantec's SRESHELL to do the setup, but in opensource, things will change
  18. Who's your OEM ? Maybe I should ask them for an evaluation for myself
  19. i think that wouled be illegal, not sure It's as illegal as converting XP Home in XP Pro. Such a thing is partially restricted through the Global Policy, mainly to prevent people from adding Server 2008 components in Vista. At this point it's a painful process as there's no proper tool to do it, so I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Maybe things will be different when there will be a Vista Embedded platform.
  20. Actually, it is as fast as server, now it's the same build 6001 codebase. The RTM shared the codebase with Server 2008 Beta 3. HP was kind enough to provide me a OEM disc to test, on which I've tested several vLite scenarios, all working well. My recomandations are to use SP1 Beta together with vLite 1.1, the 6001 AIK, VMware Workstation 6.0.1 (build 50000+) and Microsoft Deployment 4. In order to test the improvements, I have made the following scenario: 1) Made an unattended install from my HP disc using vLite without removing anything, for Ultimate Edition. 2) Installed it in VMware 3) Installed IIS7 with ASP.NET using Programs and Features 4) Activated it 5) Sysprepped 6) Used WinPE 2.0 to boot and capture C: to a WIM over the network 7) Removed the CLG and replaced the vLited WIM with the one I've captured 8) Ran vLite to remove stuff I didn't want 9) Installed the WIM through WDS The nice part comes here: you can use at this point vLite to remove unwanted functionality WITHOUT making IIS7 unusable. I am sure that by diffing the new WIM against the original one I can identify the missing files that prevent the new vLite disc to install.
  21. Don't you just love the things you can do with your network? Here's the latest thing I've tried on Server 2008: Please notice the abnormalities in this picture
  22. and also has done this many times to the same installation, adding or rolling up file versions along the way. Without this it would have been impossible to make Vista the way it is now (imagine having to reinstall windows using the clasical installer 20-30 times for each build or file change) or to test it properly.
  23. runs quite fast for checked code, never saw that in Vista beta.
  24. yes, that's a good scenario, in my case I am trying to develop a more automatized solution. If you just handle one computer and no server components yours does the job just fine.
