  1. Hello all! Last week, I got Optimum Online. I went through a whole ordeal enabling my Network Neighborhood on Windows 98 First Edition. Seems like there's not much information on how to configure your Modem -> Ethernet Connection -> Network Neighborhood. I actually, had to use the USB Connection at first, seeing that Optimum Online's installation Cd, couldn't find my DEC 21143 Adaptor. Funny thing, is my second Hard Drive is exactly like my first hard drive (I have a replica of my Motherboard and, Hard Drive) and, it was found. So, I have Optimum Online installed in my second Hard Drive (Which I use primarily for storage) and my first Hard Drive has Opera, and Internet Explorer. Upon powering up the Computer, I keep getting an enter a Network Password. I really don't know what I did, for this to pop up every time I restart my computer. I also installed it (Optimum Online) on my Windows XP computer, to see if I was getting the advertised speed. Sure enough, I met the benchmark of 10 Mbps. When, I tried the same benchmark on the Windows 98 First Edition machine, I'm only at 6.66 Mbps. Now. When I was using the USB connection, I attained 3.4 Mbps. Which was great until I saw what my Windows XP computer can do using the Ethernet Cable. This is when I was determined to use the Ethernet on my Windows 98 FE Computer. I'm not sure if it's Network Neighborhoods settings or Windows 98 First Edition's configuration, but, I'm not getting 10 Mbps. Please help. I want to dance with 10 Mbps, not the devil (6.66 Mbps), and get rid of the Network Neighboorhood "Enter Password" window when I power up my computer. Seeing that this is the second time, I’ve got my computer status removed from my signature, here is the computer I’m working on; AMD K6 400 MHZ 768 Mb of RAM Windows 98 First Edition. 10 Mbps Ethernet Port PCI Fast Ethernet DEC 21143 Based Adaptor Thanks.
  2. Okay, thanks. I'll just throw the memory in the 98 SE Computer, and keep the 98 First Edition Computer @ 512 KB. Read my signature. I have 98 First Edition, 98 SE, and, XP Professional. I just like to tweak the 98 First Edition the most. B)
  3. If you can figure a way to have XP Software work on your 3rd edition, that would be great!
  4. Congratulations You know why I like Windows 98? It gives me the power to manipulate it how I want. And with the 137 GB Barrier broken, I think I'll keep on using it. Kudos to all the developers keeping this operating system alive.
  5. Did you guys read this? http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=3609 So, I guess Microsoft is eliminating computers as well.
  6. I haven't found the need to. I started (Back in 1999) saving every program I needed on CDRs. So, when I need anything, I pop in the Disk(s). The only thing I'm planning to update (In which I downloaded already) is the 137 barrier. However, the 1.5 GB Modification will be first, as soon as I purchase more memory. B)
  7. Personally, I need a computer that works. So, a bunch of unnecessary graphics slowing its performance, is something I can do without. Read how many users of Vista are complaining how much RAM this new operating system is devouring. I think it’s safe to say, the guys tweaking Windows 98 are not doing because they cannot afford Windows XP. They’ve grown out of the eye candy that Windows XP offers, and just needs something basic that will work for their needs.
  8. Hey everyone. I’m somewhat amazed. Every year I reinstall Windows 98 First Edition on my Internet PC. Based on “My Documents” CDs that’s February, and, August. Downloading all kinds of “stuff” on the web usually shows its effect on Windows 98 by sluggish movement. Well, August is just a few days away, and to my surprise, the computer is performing excellent, and, I may skip the late summer cleanup. I even ran a virus scan on my system and it found none! Just something I wanted to share. B)
  9. Hey KingAuther, Thanks for the link! I'll add this with my other collection of browsers on a CD. EDIT: Would you believe I installed Windows XP Professional on my Internet computer this morning! Surprise, Surprise. It works on my 8 year old AMD K6 400 Hz Computer. Unfortunately, I've grown so accustomed to having my Internet PC shutdown in 2 seconds on Windows 98 First Edition, I couldn't deal with the timely shutdown which is the standard with XP Pro. I have XP Professional on my Dell, so no big deal. B)
  10. Hey Everyone I'm looking for possibly a list that gives you all the keywords when going from Start -> Run. I only know three; msconfig system.ini drwatson Are they anymore? Thank you,
  11. Apllications for the most part, yes. B) There are some applications that will not install on Windows 98 First Edition, when they state Windows 98SE. I use Windows 98 First Edition for my internet needs, and, Windows 98 Second Edition for my music needs. There is a difference among the two in which many don't know about. In terms of stability, I couldn't tell you. They both react the same for non internet work, and, Windows 98SE isn't connected to the net.
  12. Hello This is something thats urked me for years. Windows 98 SE programs not installing on Windows 98 First Edition. Is it a matter of taking a few dlls from 98 SE, installing them in 98 First Edition, to solve the problem? Thank you.
  13. Fredledingue, I agree as well. Hardware Requirements have catapulted throughout the years. I'll reserve my opinion on Vista, until I purchase a new computer. Seeing that it's pointless, upgrading my XP Computer (32 Bit) to Vista, I'll just wait a few years, when the "beta stage" should be over. Have A Great Weekend.
  14. Did you check your Mulitmedia settings and made sure your Wave & Synthesizer controls are up, and checked?
  15. Fredledingue, I would say the limitation on 98 goes back to Fat 32. When you are editing Audio/Video hard drive space is used up rather quickly. When you take into consideration the plugins to enhance quality, comparing the original to the finished work, you'll need alot space. Sure! 4 GB is what you start off with. However, once you begin your work, the size is much larger than that. Blu Ray discs can hold up to 200 GB. This could be easily used for the best video quality, and, surround sound. Video and Audio holds no boundaries in size, when quality is the objective. If I record an audio file @ 24 Bit 96 Khz, I'll reach the 2 GB limit (Fat 32) under an hour. Today, 192 Khz 24 bit, is the new standard for professional audio recording. If a Blu - Ray Disc is using High Definition Video, and, Surround sound, I can't say Windows 98 would be strong enough to handle such a file, when editing is concerned. If by chance it's encoded in 64 Bit, it will eliminate Windows 98 altogether. Bare in mind, I'm speaking sheerly on a Audio/Video Professional level. The Home Consumer could well indeed operate a Blu Ray Disc Drive on Windows 98. Provided it is not encoded @ 64 Bit of course! Although, as you mentioned, drivers will probably be non existent, unless some one is skilled enough to design one on their own. When I see Vista, I see a whole new meaning to Windows. One that will create a new standard, on a lot of things, and, restrict users that don't have computers operating on At Least Windows XP. While I do love my Windows 98/98SE, technology is moving very rapid these days. When 64 Bit computers become the standard as far as society goes, Windows 98SE/98 & 95 will be what Windows 3.1 is today.............. Non existent.
  16. If you're doing MPEG, or AVI editing, you won't have that much problems. However, if you're trying to edit DVDs in terms of effects, and surround sound, you'll find 98SE is the limiting factor for not only the software, but the Video card as well. With Blue Ray Disks being the latest craze, Vista's 64 Bit platform will benefit over Windows XP. You can read more about Blu Ray here if you're not familiar with it; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc
  17. I do recordings all the time. Just send your mix out of your board into your computer. If you have a good sound card, I would suggest recording no less than @ 24 bit, 48000 Khz. If you can do 24 Bit, 96000 Khz, all the better! Of course, you'll do this in Wav for it offers no compression whatsoever. You can always convert it to any format you like later on. What program are you using the record? I'm using Wavelab.
  18. To each their own. But, comparing Low Bit Rate to Low Bit Rate WMA usually wins. It's only when you go outside WMA limitations, you actually benefit from MP3. Also, WMA only offers a standard encoder. So, you won't have the option to tweak it like using a Lame Encoder. Personally, for my MP3 player, I prefer WMA over MP3. Try, listen, and come to your own conclusion. Good Luck!
  19. Hi If you want something that will work in any player that offers no compression whatsoever, it's going to be WAV The downside is, being the largest in terms of file size. For MP3 Encoders, I like Fraunhofer, but it's not free. I usually encode mp3s @ 320 Kbs 44100 Khz for CD copies, or 320 48000 Khz, if I'm making my on mixes. There are so many out there, I would suggest you listen before you decide. There's no better, just what sounds best to you. Good Luck!
  20. I appologize for quoting you wrong. It was just that piece, that solved the puzzle. At least we're on the same track
  21. Actually Video Games, is the next big thing for Home PCs. This is why, many are upgrading their 32 bit systems to 64 bit systems, and installing the Vista Platforms. Being very familiar with Audio, I'm more than positive, Vista, is steered primarily for Video purposes than XP, 98, & of course, 95. You just don't need an OS housing 7 GB for Audio purposes. This is why I can use 98SE for DJing audio in 2006. It's not that I don't have an XP Computer available. It's because, all the extras that XP offers, doesn't justify the need for playback pre-recorded music. But for Video, more graphics, clarity, and, effects, increases the operating size tremendously! And, this is where XP shines over 98SE. It will come to a point, that we (Consumers) will need to stop, think, and, decide if all these extras are really necessary for our needs. Vista is a graphical operating system. For a gamer, this is great. For a video editor, this is fantastic. For the person who has no intrest in neither, it's overkill on your PCs Hard Drive.
  22. Thank you Gentlemen. I appolgize for my terminology error The 98 SE Computer is for DJing so, I would guess, that's why msgloop.exe and msg.32.exe are running. The 98 First Edition, is only for the Internet. I'm not using msconfig btw. I use a process starter to view everything running on my computers. Upon startup, 98SE offers 99% free, and, 98 First Edition states 98% free, so, I guess I'm fine. How can I disconnect MREXE.EXE completely from Windows 98 SE? I'm never going to use this computer for anything that pertains to the Internet. Thanks.
  23. Happy 4th Of July Guys! So, I'm curious what's the minimun processors I can use on Windows 98 & 98SE. Keep in mind, I'm not talking neo 98 nor lite 98. Just Microsoft's Standard 98 & 98SE Thanks to MDGx's website, I found out that I'm using the final versions of 98 & 98 SE. Here's what processors I have starting on my 98 Computers; Windows 98 First Edition Build 4.10.1998 EXPLORER.EXE KERNELL32.DLL mmtask.tsk MPREXE.EXE MSGSRV32.EXE Windows 98 Second Edition Build 4.10.2222 A EXPLORER.EXE KERNELL32.DLL mmtask.tsk MPREXE.EXE MSG.32.EXE MSGLOOP.EXE MSGSRV32.EXE I have a Windows XP computer as well, however, I'll just post the Windows XP Minimum Processors startup on the XP Forum. In regards, to Windows 98 & 98 SE, can I disconnect anything else? Thank you.
