Nope. You're not insane. You gave your reasons why you use Windows 95. Unfortunately, it seems the Moderator on Mozilla forums needs some growing up to do. I rest my case.

I just want something that works. Heh, Windows 2000 works and is vastly superior to Windows 98 and its FAT32 limitation. How do you store a 4Gb+ ISO file on FAT32? The answer is you don't, because you can't. Why would I need a 4GB file ISO for Audio? That's Video (DVD) in which I have no interest of. The Fat 32 limitation is not an issue for me because I use separate internal Hard Drives. I'm into Audio, and it's common for guys to use multiple Hard Drives for Audio purposes. So, relying on one Hard Drive to do it all is not what Audio Professionals do. This topic is called "Why continue to use Windows 9x?" but for me the full question would have to be "Why continue to use Windows 9x when you could just use Windows 2000?" What I mentioned previously says it all. I use my Computer primarily for Audio Purposes. Which doesn't need Windows 2000. Operating systems don't hold any factors when it comes to the quality of sound. What matters is the sound card. My sound cards offer 96Khz/24 Bit with MIDI. So I'm not losing anything remaining on Windows 98.

I use Windows 98 FE for numerous reasons. Little Process Needed Windows 98 can run on 5 processors (6 if you count Opera) Speed No matter how you toss it, Windows 98 shuts down faster than XP. This is very important to me when I'm running out the door, and want my computer to shutdown instantly. No Phoning Microsoft to Activate Freedom. That's very interesting! Well, after a few days toying with Firefox, my curiosity has been fulfilled. And I'm back on Opera 9.02 I agree with Jeremy. For my computer Opera just works best in terms of stability and performance.

Hello Fellow Windows 95/98 users. Well, after trying out the new Firefox (2.0) and experiencing dial up response on a cable network, I've decided to go "Back In Time" and use Firefox 0.9 I've always knew Firefox was getting slower as the versions increased (Like Internet Exploer). Not to mention, I remember having pretty good results before moving towards version 1.1 Opera 9.02 (I may just resort back to 8.5), will always be my Primary Browser. But, when I need a change in scenary, I use Firefox 0.9 I have only one issue, that I've noticed even with Firefox 1.5 How do you "Copy & Paste" on Firefox? Firefox is the only browser I cannot copy and paste on message boards. I've always had to resort to copying to Word, and dragging the information into Firefox.

Hey, thanks for your input! I'm really enjoying the read and the civil manner that's taking place. Quick question! I used to work in a big retail store when I was 16 the time Windows 95 became available. I didn't know anything about Computers much less Operating Systems (I actually had my first experience on a Mac Computer/Monitor integrated system) until I purchased my first Computer in 1998 (Thus, Win 98 FE) Pre-dating Windows 98, were there no Internet Explorer?

So, I'm on another popular forum, and a lot of people are now realizing that Windows XP will not be top dog anymore. As I read, most are all for Vista, while a few are clinging on to XP. What I find amusing is the response of by the posters. I could've sworn I read the same replies when XP was going to be the big dog on the block back in 2001. I give it a year, and you'll hear the same negativity we Win 98 users received when we chose not to upgrade to XP, directed toward XP users. I'm already reading a few replies from posters stating XP wasn't great anyway. Those who don't upgrade will soon feel what many of us Windows 98 users felt. Just something I needed to get off my chest, that I knew many Windows 98 users would understand. For the record, I am a Windows XP user. I just know that many who constantly abused us throughout the years using Windows 98, will be getting their share abuse, when Vista becomes the standard in Windows Operating Systems.

Very nice post Arrow, and I agree 100% And, thanks for the World Browser BTW.

I suspect so too. My Windows 98SE used to do that as well. I would have only the necessary processors running upon start up, and it would show 100% Funny, it only occured on my 98SE Machine, and not the 98 FE or Win XP CPUs. Wow! When you start you machine, your system resources is only at 59%? Mine starts at 97% Could it be something running in the background why, your system resources is pratically half when you power up? I've gotten mine to power up on as little as 7 processors btw.

Thanks everyone. I guess I'll just wait to see what soporific brings to the table. In the meantime, I'll just do more research on this board, and see what turns up.

Hello Everyone Happy Pre-Columbus Day for those who celebrate it. I would like to take the most essential patches, exe., etc. located on MDGx’s website and create a CD that I can have for future references. Overwhelmed by so much stuff, I'm in need of your help. What would be the bare essentials that you could not do without if you were making a MDGx Windows 98/98SE CD. I can only think of one (IDE Barrier Patch) and it is probably because everything is working in tiptop form. Thanks.

Having More Memory Speed Opposed Processing Speed

Thanks oscardog. It's ashame I picked it up before reading your post. I don't mind though. The Norton cloned the drive and, I'm very pleased it was done so quickly. -
Having More Memory Speed Opposed Processing Speed
Atmosphere XG replied to Atmosphere XG's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Thanks for your comments Gentlemen! I do have Miss Pacman in DOS on my Windows XP Computer, when the urge strikes. I just don't find these games so appealing nowadays. Possibly due to looking less like Video Games, and more like Virtual Games with story lines added to make them more realistic? I do listen to a few audio streams once in a while and every so month checkout You Tube on this Computer. Having multiple tabs began, when I started saving all my Bookmarks in HTML files. I would store them in My Documents and, open the whole thing on one page. As more pages came of interest, I would build more bookmarks, and save them in a folder according to the closing date. So, that builds one tab. The second tab would come from having the home page separate from the hyper link page(s). Say, I want to read multiple posts on MSFN Forums. I would open each post in it's own tab. Now, if someone mentions a product, that sounds interesting, I would then open another tab to research the product in question. This is how the tabs accumulate. I've been online since 1998. So, I'm more into research than trying to watch music videos on whatever the hottest thing is out there now. I agree on the speed comparison going from 98 -> XP. I do have a Dell 2.8 Ghz P4 sitting on XP Home and its remarkably slow for the internet compared to this 400 MHZ Win98 CPU. That's why I only use this computer online and, keep the other two Internet free. I get a lot of buddies laughing at the beige computer sitting in the living room with the sound of the keyboard "tapping away" when you need to write anything. But, once they give it a test run and see how fast and responsive it's moving about online, it leaves them puzzled. Sure, it's outdated, sure it's on Windows 98 FE, but its fast on the Internet, and turns off in 2 seconds flat. That's the perk about using Windows 98. I’m waiting around a minute for XP Home to start, and 98 FE starts around 10 – 15 seconds. I have Windows 98 SE on my music computer seeing that the demand is more severe there and, the XP Home on the Dell for whatever the 98 SE can't handle. But Win98 FE is what I use to surf online. And that's its sole purpose, to research online. B) AdAware Professional SE, Registry First Aid is installed, and, I'm going to get Norton Ghost today, to mimic my hard drive to another drive. Hopefully next week, I get more RAM. Thanks Again! -
So what to do if and when 98SE is no longer viable?
Atmosphere XG replied to emarkay's topic in Windows 9x/ME
If you are looking for Video convertors that will work in Windows 98, you should checkout http://www.imtoo.com/ A lot of convertors there, and, many do work on Windows 98. -
Having More Memory Speed Opposed Processing Speed
Atmosphere XG replied to Atmosphere XG's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Thanks for the replies although I didn't know such a question would be considered trolling. The reason I asked, is due to seeing a lot of posts from Windows 98 users buying Motherboards and installing it on their new Computers. Where I'm just using my old Computer. In addition to looking at the Specs of many computers offering RAM capacity slightly below the Processing Speed. I'm well aware of the system.ini -> vcache trick to increase my RAM. However, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't an exception to Processing Speed before adding more RAM. For the Internet, 400 Mhz its fast enough. But when you have multiple tabs open, it really takes it's toll on the RAM availability. I'm not trying to play music, movies or games. Just basic Internet surfing. I have another Computer solely designed for Music, and I rather buy DVDs before trying to view one on a Computer. Lost all interest in Games 18 years ago. So, for my situation, 400 Mhz is fine. Thanks Again! -
Hello All! I was wondering the downfalls (If any) of having 1 Ghz of Memory on a 400 MHZ Computer. Is there a rule on having more processing speed opposed ram? Thanks

Can You Install Windows 98 On A Blank Drive
Atmosphere XG replied to Atmosphere XG's topic in Windows 9x/ME
I believe the "OEM-customised Windows" sounds correct. For, I've been reinstalling my computer to factory default for years, and, I do have the Windows 98 book, Product Key, & the Certificate of Authenticity as well. I can actually go to Windows -> Options -> Cabs? and, pull the whole Windows 98 out of my computer. I tried re-installing it directly that way (Clicking on the "Setup") and it reinstalled But! I needed to punch in a Name & something else below that (Due to stating "Unknown" in the boxes) and, when I tried that, I got some kind of error, and, it shut down. So.......... I used my backup drive, deleted the problem drive, and, re-partitioned it again. All I need to do now, is to format it (I can actually do this on my other PC with the working Floppy Drive) and, reinstall the OEM version back to default. Couldn't I just "Mirror Image" the working drive on the newly formatted (and portioned) older drive? They are exactly the same (Hard drive brand/Specs wise) Thanks -
Ever since I got my First Computer (Back in 1998) my Floppy Drive worked for about a month, then died. It actually works but, it can never read the disks. So, from 1998 to 2006 I never used the Floppy Disk. I would like to copy Windows 98 on another Hard drive for backup, and, was wondering if there was a way to do it, without resorting to the Floppy Disk. The Drive is empty and partitioned. All is needed is to install Windows 98. I like to keep my second, third, etc. Hard Drives loaded with an operating system in the event the main drive dies, I can just switch IDE cables and I'm back in business. Oh. I'm using the Recovery Disc CD that came with the Computer. That's the catch. Having two to three Hardrives offering the same features/functions. It offers Windows 98 on the CD. Will this be a problem?

Hey, thanks for the help. Well, I think Free RAM XP was the cause of the problem. I turned it off, and, all is well.

Good Morning. So, I added more memory to my Internet Computer (512 = 768) and my computer is Crashing spuratically. At one time, it crashed, and started to add up the amount of memory I had, began and dated back to December 1997 When I jumped into system.ini the maximum file vcache was blank so, I added "MaxFileCache=524288" eventhough, my computer was seeing the whole 768 before I made this tweak. I'm also using Free RAM XP to "Free Up" ram when it dips below 65. I tried shutting it down last night, and, it crashed again so, I just turned off the computer's power supply switch. This morning all is well (No Scanning Disc Upon Powering Up), but, I would like to get to the bottom of this. I'm not sure if this will help, but this is my system.ini file Help!

I'm getting 9.6 mbps and, I'm on Windows 98 First Edition. You may want to check your Ethernet Card. Mine goes only up to 10 mbps. However, once I upgrade, I should be able to get up to 15 mbps. Even before I tweaked my connection settings, I was getting 6.66 mbps. So, check your Ethernet card limitation.

Windows 98 First Edition & Network Neighborhood
Atmosphere XG replied to Atmosphere XG's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Update I did a little tweaking here and there which, increased my download speed to 1167 KBs a second peak, and 1156 KBs on average. So thats 9.336 -> 9.248 Mbps. My Ethernet card is 10 Mbps, so I can't expect to attain the speed of my Dell using a 10/100 Mbps card. I guess I'll just leave the operating systems "as is" and continue to surf using Windows 98 First edition. B) -
Windows 98 First Edition & Network Neighborhood
Atmosphere XG replied to Atmosphere XG's topic in Windows 9x/ME
Hey, thanks for the help! I actually have Windows 98SE in my DJ Computer. I could pull it out of there, and install it on my second hard drive. OR, Install Windows XP Professional on my second Hard Drive. Seeing that I have Optimum Online installed on my second Hard Drive would that work? I'm not really concerned with the USB Connections, for I only use one USB socket for the Digital Camera. So, should I; A. Install Windows 98 SE B. Install Windows XP Professional Since this PC is only for the Internet, I'm trying to take advantage of the 10 Mbps speed using the Ethernet connection, and enjoy Windows 98, at the same time. Here's the full specs of the Computer I'm using a Cat6 Ethernet Cable if that helps. Thanks. -
Windows 98 First Edition & Network Neighborhood

Awesome!!! Thanks! Last question. Will Ethernet, put a heavier toll on your RAM than Dial Up? I find my Memory being reduced significantly, and I was wondering if it was the culprit? BTW to keep my computer moving fast on Dial Up, I was using AOL 5.0 While I'm overly impressed on the Speed, I'm not so thrilled on my lower than usual memory loss. Should I assume, the "smileys" & gif images increase in movement speed is why, my memory is lower than average? Thanks again B)
