i was wondering if somebody could help me out here. i was reading up on hfexpert features and it mentions you can put registry hives in HFEXPERTHIVEINSTALL. i have a few .reg files that i've put in hfsvcpack to accomplish some system tweaks. how do these two methods differ and which one is more effective ? and what are registry hives if not .reg files ? and how can i convert those .reg files to hives? like supposing i have one that unhides system and hidden files among other things (see attachment) will it take effect if used via hfexpert (textmode) or is it better to do via hfsvcpack (at T13) as currently ?

Personally I do reg files in hfsvcpack because there are some setup infs that change the default hives. To get a better answer, you should really ask in the "customizing windows" forum and not the HFSLIP forum.

i posted here cuz i be using 'em with hfslip. besides, i know you guys, i don't know nobody over there :D

well if you don't mind, could you gimme some sort of pros and cons kinda thingies? like which method to pick over the other and why?

Hives set the first default, setup infs do a second and final default. If you do a setup hive, the settings may not stick because they may be overwritten by a setup inf. If you use hfsvcpack reg's, the changes will affect all users and will stick.

In other words, here's the flow...

default installation of windows - default setup hives -> setup infs

hfslip installation of windows - default setup hives -> user hives -> default setup infs -> hfsvcpack inf's & reg's

So you can see that hfsvcpack infs and regs happen pretty much last step of windows installation, which also happens to be the default user.

Hope this helps.

thats exactly what i was thinking and thats exactly why i asked about those specific settings - i was thinking since they take effect in text mode they could very easily get superseded by something else that goes down between then and the desktop showing up. but if such is the case then what kind of stuff would be good to do via hives at textmode ?

by the way, i hope you guys don't mind, i'm just trying to get a hang of things here :D

With hives, you can set up driver signature stuff, add in various fixes for timezones, add in ramdisks, and fix the 48lba barrier with 2k installations. I'm sure that there are plenty of other things to either add or delete from the infant registry too. Tinkering with hives is hardcore OS modifying. If you don't know what you're doing, then you may encounter errors during installation.
