Revolutions Pack Dilemna

Recommended Posts

Ok, I got this WIN98 computer at my school. I installed Service Pack 2.1a, then Revolution Pack 7. The first time I tried to install, it messed up and I had to try again several times. Finally I got it installed.

Soon after, I decided I didn't want RP7 anymore and uninstalled it. Problem was, RP7 WAS STILL THERE AFTER I UNINSTALLED. I assumed that one of the failed installs must have buggered it up.

To make matter worse, the RP uninstall option was gone, and the sysbackup folder had none of the original files, so that was out of the question.

Now I have to get rid of the RP features like the special shut down, special icons etc etc.

I thought that if I installed UnofficialWin98SESP2 over the install, everything would revert to normal.

To test this hypothesis, I tried it on my second home computer with 98SE and rev pack. The result was a totally messed up install, and as result I didn't dare try it on the school computer.

So I need to get rid of the RP crap so it looks like normal windows. Any ideas?

P.S. A reinstall is obviously out of the question.

if you uninstalled it shouldnt have been there did you refresh the icon cache

are you sure rp7 backs up to the sysbackup directory i thought it backed up to the revbackup directory

if you cant reinstall windows which would be the best option you could restore all the files that rp7 modifies from the 98se cd and than install usp2.1a

The problem is that when you reinstalled the SP2 over RP7, it didn't replace files with a newer version (most if not all) but changed the registry to the older settings, resulting in a mess.

To restore a working config now, you could extract manually all files from SP2/your 98 CD and copy them from DOS like Awergh said.

Or... I don't remember the switches but there must some way to "force" the install of SP2 over newer files. Try to look this way.

I don't wanna be mean but I really must ask what the heck you where doing putting something like this on a school computer???

Long story, but I rather not get into it.

Well, when I tried that experiment on my second home computer, I made sure that the new files got replaced by old files from SP2 by clicking "No" when it asked if I wanted to save the newer version, and it still messed up.

The school computer is still functional, it just has Revolutions Pack on it, and I want that gone.

The school computer has the 98 CD already on the HD in the form of a folder called "WIN98SE". Is it possible that I could modify the autoexec.bat file to copy the files from that folder and overwrite the other versions?

ex.

copy C:\Win98\Shell32.exe C:\Windows\System
copy C:\Win98\Explorer.exe C:\Windows
etc

AFAIK files replaced by wininit on reboot are normally backed up by Windows in the sysbckup dir.

Anyway Ambassador, have a look in the wininit.log file in your windows dir. It should list all the files that have been replaced on reboot.

And don't forget to ask tihiy in his own thread what to do. This pack has recurrent uninstall issues since eons it seems.

Can I restore the files from within windows?

Yes by using wininit.exe and creating a wininit.ini file for it. Here is a GUI tool to create the wininit.ini file for you :

http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/tools/...installfile.zip

Of course you first need to extract the files you want to restore from the install cabs.

1. Download but do not install current RP7 edition:

http://tihiy.ahanix.org/RP7MM.exe

2. D/l + install WinZip or WinRAR or PowerArchiver [or any other unzipper which supports the CAB exe format]:

http://www.mdgx.com/toy.htm#ZIP

3. Open RP7MM.exe with the unzipper you like.

4. Extract all files but make sure to keep the exact structure: folders + files.

5. Open the BAT, INF + TXT files to see which files are replaced/backed up/etc.

6. Get replaced files from the Win98 SE setup CD-ROM or CABs, or if newer versions available, get them by installing respective updates:

http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#98SE

7. Copy replaced files not available as newer updates by hand back to their original folders from native MS-DOS.

Or if some files were backed up, go to those folders and put them back.

How to exit/reboot into native/true/real/pure MS-DOS mode:

A. by holding down Shift + F5 at the same time during BIOS boot POST (Power On Self Test) sequence.

B. OR by scrolling down using the down arrow to the "Command prompt only" option and then pressing Enter from the Windows 98 Startup Menu:

http://www.mdgx.com/msdos.htm#MEN

C. OR from a Windows 98 SE Emergency/Bootup/Startup floppy/CD/DVD/USB/external disc/stick/tape.

8. Reboot.

9. If still doesn't work, ask Tihiy, the RP author:

"NEED HELP NOW!!!!!!!!!!!" = all caps and exclamation signs used this way are considered shouting, which is rude in forums, email, IRC, messenger etc.
