Symc8xx.sys error when installing win XP

Just bought new motherboard and amd processor and two 1g ram sticks. Buddy at the computer store installed it all for me. I told him I can install the windowsXp because my old comp was so f'ed that I basically had to reinstalll windows everytime the bloody thing turned off. So I take home my new comp and buddy at the store said everything is fine all it needs is the win install and I tried it and it gets to a certain point during the initial blue screen setup and stops and says symc8xx.sys error setup failed hit any key to reboot. What do I do now?

That particular file could not be read properly from the disk. Make sure there are no scratches or debris on the disk. If after cleaning it with a soft cloth it does not work, you may have to obtain a new installation CD from your friend at the computer shop.

if you have another computer, you could try extracting the files from the CD and creating a new copy of it. yes, technically it is illegal to make a copy, however, CD-RW's make it possible to 'destroy' the evidence when done. i'm not endorsing the making of copies, but my windows Server 2k3 CD had to be backed up somehow..that was the only way. now its just an ISO on the external drive.

my cd was slid along my desk across a nail point that pokes up, giving a deep scratch on the data side of the CD, not the plastic bottom.
