Kmuland Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 Using 98lite.. I used the windows95 shell on the michro install version for maximun performance and low memory requirements.. so OS runs very fast. Its posible do the same replacing the XP shell by the one of win2000?I have tried replacing just the explorer.exe file.. but ists not enough for display the start bar and the desktop. Maybe I need to replace more files than just explorer.exeAny help appreciated
Kmuland Posted February 26, 2007 Author Posted February 26, 2007 cause some programs dont work properly on win2k :/
Sonic Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 Even if it's possible (while breaking few features of XP), tweaking will best choice than replacing the shell, IMHOFew regsDisabling themes & effectsDisabling un-used servicesCleaning programs at start

He is still left with the optionof somehow replacing explorer.exe with something lighter orperhaps the Windows 2000 explorer.exe. One thing is, the Explorer on XP is about 1Mb in size whereas the oneon Windows 2000 is only 237Kb - that is a massive difference really.I reckon there has to be a way to make the Windows 2000 one work on XP
Kmuland Posted February 26, 2007 Author Posted February 26, 2007 (edited) I already have very stripped XP with Nlite.. all "visual" stuffs disabled, using really few services.. and no programs loading at startup.. running all my programs as portable versionsI only look for fastest computer response.. and minimal memory usage--- so I was thinking about improving system resources using the win2000 shell instead of the XP one Edited February 26, 2007 by Kmuland
Sonic Posted February 27, 2007 Posted February 27, 2007 but explorer.exe is not only responsable of windows responsiveness.Look for win2k + patchs/hack to allow the features you want in XP to keep responsiveness of Win2k ...
