anothersmith84 Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 I am looking for a way to update Windows 98 to Windows 98 SE, just by using a pack or copying some files? I've looked through the forums, but found nothing that said I could. I'm assuming the Windows 98 Unofficial service pack is for SE only.If this is not possible, is the Windows 98 First Edition key code compatible with the Windows 98 Second Edition setup? Thanks,Jason
CptMurphy Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 You can't upgrade using a pack, you need to get the full CD for win98SE upgrade. I'm pretty sure you can use the same key but I haven't used this OS in years so don't take my word for it.
Atmosphere XG Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 (edited) CptMurphy is correct.I asked the same question here last year. I wanted some programs to install that wouldn't under Windows 98 but would on Windows 98SE . Windows 98SE is a totaly different operating system than Windows 98 Gold. My Windows 98 Codename is *Chicago* whereas, 98SE Codename is *Memphis*. I actually found that out searching through some dlls one night. *Chicago* is Windows 95. So, Windows 98 FE is more an upgrade from Windows 95. I'm assuming that's why Microsoft never called it First Edition (FE) but Gold. I would also imagine this is why Microsoft never gave a free upgrade for users of Windows 98 to 98SE. This leads me to understand the reasoning behind Windows 98 SE Upgrade Disc, and a Full Install Disc (Which couldn't be used as an upgrade for Windows 98 FE). Check your stamp date. Mine is 4.10.1998 If yours is the same, you're probably in the same boat as me. Edited February 13, 2007 by Atmosphere XG
MDGx Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 If you have Windows 98 Gold/FE, right-click My Computer -> Properties dialog box -> should say:Windows 984.10.1998If you have Windows 98 SE, it should say:Windows 98 Second Edition4.10.2222 AExample:http://www.mdgx.com/ver95.gifOr open Windows Explorer -> highlight %windir%\SYSTEM\KERNEL32.DLL [%windir% = usually C:\WINDOWS] -> right-click on it -> select the Version tab -> scroll down to Product Version -> 98 Gold/FE = 4.10.1998 [or newer] or 98 SE = 4.10.2222 [or newer].M$ sold [directly from their web site] a $20 Step Upgrade [called "Updates"] CD-ROM which allowed to upgrade only from 98 Gold/FE to 98 SE way back in 1998:http://www.mdgx.com/win.htmHTH
BenoitRen Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 *Chicago* is Windows 95. So, Windows 98 FE is more an upgrade from Windows 95.More like a downgrade. It's Windows 95 + IE4, including the s***ty new shell. And some bugfixes.

So I couldn't say how both differs in terms of functionality.
galahs Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 Does anybody have a copy of this Upgrade CD?I would be interested in knowing does it just do a few updates 98 to bring it up to 98SE or is it a Full Upgrade CD (entire Windows version so you can lean install from it), if you get what I mean

That's done all the time.
