Scouser Posted September 30, 2003 Posted September 30, 2003 Help!Am receiving the following message on Boot Up:" Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\Windows\system32\config\system.You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup cd-romSelect r at the first sreen to start repair"I have done this and ran bootfix but the problem remains exactly the same!Any ideas out there please would be much appreciated....CheersScouser
tosk Posted October 1, 2003 Posted October 1, 2003 All bootfix will do is repair the NT boot loader. I think the only way you're going to be able to fix the problem is by reinstalling XP. I could be wrong though. Next chance I get, I'll reboot into the repair utility and check out some stuff.
b0r3d Posted October 1, 2003 Posted October 1, 2003 Try this:Open a dos box, and type sfc /scannowSFC stands for System File Checker. It will check your system files and locate any corrupt ones, and attempt to fix them.
Aaron Posted October 1, 2003 Posted October 1, 2003 Have you tried pressing F8 just before the Windows XP boot screen appears, and selected "Last Known Good Configuration"?
rik Posted October 2, 2003 Posted October 2, 2003 I have tried running fixboot and chkdsk /r from the recovery console and both have had mixed results. Unfortunately I end up reinstalling typically when this happens...
Scouser Posted October 2, 2003 Author Posted October 2, 2003 Thanks for your responses Guys, I'd already tried F8 on bootup and last known config, but it did exactly the same on reboot! Also tried chdsk /r which did'nt do the trick either! No resigned to doing a rebuild on the weekend!Cheers
