mdana Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 (edited) I am running WinXP SP2 and it is hard wired to a router. The router is attached to a cable modem. When I start this PC I have a good internet connection. I can use it all day. But when I step away for a while the connection drops.I disable, re-enable the lan connection and still I can not connect to the internet. The only way I have been able to reconnect is reboot.I can see that the router is connected with the admin webpage.I also have a linux box connected to this router and it does not loose the connection. Please help me get my wife off my back by solving the connection problem on her PC.Thanks in advance. Jeremy Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 What make and model is the router? When you lose your connection do the following:Start > Run > CMD > "ipconfig /release" and then "ipconfig /renew". If that works properly, then it's likely not your router. If the router has a release and renew option do that. If it times out, you need to call your ISP.
mdana Posted January 31, 2007 Author Posted January 31, 2007 Router is a DLink DI-524I will try to release the IP like you said.thanks.
Jeremy Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 (edited) Router is a DLink DI-524Yeah, I have a DI-604 so the interface is the same. When you get into the administrative console of the router, go to Status and it should give you the internal (usually 192.168.0.1) IP and external IP (the one you get from the ISP).D-Links are actually known for being problematic sometimes. In the long run if no usual troubleshooting resolves the issue, then you might want to consider getting a new router, like the infamous Linksys ones. Edited January 31, 2007 by Jeremy
mdana Posted January 31, 2007 Author Posted January 31, 2007 I don't really think it is the router.Like I said earlier, I also have a linux machine attached to this router. I rarely reboot linux and it always maintains an internet connection.
Jeremy Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Ok, so it's probably your Windows machine there. Do you have any errors in Event Log that show any indication of issues or failure? Are you using onboard or a NIC card? Is the cable going from the router to your PC good? Try turning it around? You might have a malware or virus infection that is conflicting with your connection. Please run updated full system scans with Ad-Aware SE, Spybot, and Windows Defender. Also for viruses please use either freeware Avast or a trial of Kaspersky or NOD32.
nmX.Memnoch Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Are you using an onboard NIC? If so, what's the make/model of the NIC as well as the make/model of your motherboard (or system if it's a Dell/HP/Gateway/etc).
cluberti Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I can use it all day. But when I step away for a while the connection drops. Is the machine going into standby or hibernate while you're away? I think the inactivity on the machine may be a key here...
