But some applications need it, for example O&O Defrag.

But if you use O&O Defrag you can try UltimateDefrag http://www.disktrix.com/ultimatedefrag/

It's light and better than Diskeeper, PerfectDisk and O&O Defrag.

UltimateDefrag does not require any service at all.
