November_rain Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 Im trying to decide what would give me the best performance out of what I have available. I just purchased Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS (Perpendicular Recording Technology) 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive I also have two older ones. Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 ST380817AS 80GB 7200 RPM Serial ATA150 Hard DriveThe motherboard I use will only support SATA 1. Should I use a RAID 0 setup with the two older ones or just install the OS on this new hard drive which I hear is quite fast.
bonestonne Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 if you install on the SATA drive, you'll get a max of 1.5GB/s because the drive can't function faster than the board. if you install raid on the other two, the pro will be having raid, the con will be that it would be a lot slower.its not the easiest thing to install an OS on SATA, but once its done, its very fast.
ripken204 Posted December 14, 2006 Posted December 14, 2006 well i would run some hdtach tests on the hdd, just to see which setup would be really faster.http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?act=At...st&id=15757for reference, here is the results for my seagate 320gig i just got, but it is in sataII mode...
