Dumb Question?

I was wondering if there is a prefered order of installing hotfixes.

Under normal circumstances I would go in this order : SP1, hotfixes, and updates to the window apps (media player 9, directx)

Or is the authors method prefered.

Hey, there is no real problem with the order you chose, however some of the hotfixes are already included in sp1 so you could install the updates first and then sp1, its entirly up to you.

Why don't you just silpstream SP1 so you don't have to apply it each time you reinstall?
