Yesterday I finally managed to upgrade from XP to Vista Ultimate after a few problems I encountered along the way. Today I decided to uninstall some programs that I no longer needed. So I first started uninstalling Corel Paint Shop Pro X. Halfway through the uninstallation process I got the BSOD and the system promptly rebooted itself. Except the system didn't boot up because I got the error message "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". So I loaded my Vista DVD into the drive and pressed enter but the same error message came back. What can I do to resolve this?

one of the first places to look..is to make sure you don't have a floppy inserted...also this could be results of a bad IDE connection or a 'bad sector' created from the BSOD on the uninstallation of PSP...might try and boot with the DVD and use the system recovery console and scan for bad clusters.

here are some links from a goggle search that might help

I tried restarting the system with the Vista DVD inserted in the drive but this didn't make any difference. I know I can change the order for the bootable devices within the BIOS settings but when I look at this I don't seem to be able to select the DVD drive as a bootable device - I only get Hard Drive, Floppy & CD-ROM. And I don't have a floppy disk in the drive....one of the first things I checked :)

are you sure the hard drive cable is plugged in?

have you tried to restore the boot sector?

****!! Dont tell me this is because of vista install. I am also getting the same error

on both my hard drives after I installed windows vista.

I uninstalled it, formatted my frives, installed xp prof sp2 again, but the system has to be switched

on n off many times before it boots.

Sometimes it says, ntldr is missing n sometimes just cant read the disks.

I have sent one of the hard drives back to seagate reporting the error as it was in warrenty period.

But the other one is > 3yrs old so no luck :(

madhouse,

check to see if your BIOS has an option for the boot order of your HDs, i know after installing vista on my machine, if the HD without vista installed on it is set to boot first, Vista will not load and i will get the error your stating

Same thing happend here when I installed Vista, I have to use a boot cd I got from the net a while back, It suppose to fix the NTLDR missing problem, but it also worked to start my system in the mean time. I think the cd points to boot.ini and starts windows. Im gonna try repairing the mbr to see if it helps. fdisk /mbr
