Please Help? Nlite Questions.

I need some help with nlite. I am upgrading from windows98SE. Please help. Here are my queries:

1. What is the maximum and minimum iso file size possible with nlite for Windows 2000 and Windows XP pro. And what will be the size of Windows directory in each case after installation? Actually i have a very old computer with limited space in it. Please help. Thanks in advance.

It depends of so much things that an answer almost cannot be given. Typically, you'll go from ~1.6Gig to ~700Meg on your disk so you should be able to run a 2Gig HDD. As for the ISO, as long as it fits on a CD, who cares ? . Mine (XP) is about 300Meg without the goodies. Others will surely be more precise.

You can get XP down to about 360Mb as the installed WINDOWS folder,

after that you start to lose serious functions, like MDAC, Jet Database,

Printer Support, Windows Management Instrumentation.

As an ISO it probably translates to about 160Mb.

To lose things like Printer Support (Print Spooler Service) and ability to

use webcams and digital cameras (Windows Image Aquisition service)

then yes, you can get the WINDOWS folder down to maybe under 300Mb

and a 110Mb or 115Mb ISO but then, its not going to really support the

things you'd expect it to.

By default Windows XP uses up 1200Mb of disk space and its a 400Mb+ ISO!

My ISO is ~ 150MB and it takes 400MB to install (pagefile excluded).

It includes WinXP Pro SP2 + All critical updates.

And I still got MDAC, Jet Database, Printer Support, Windows Management Instrumentation, Windows Image Aquisition service etc... and everything else

Guys, thanks for the replies. But i still do not get it.

If i make an iso of 150 MB of Windows XP SP2, then it will be take app. 400 MB after install. Or is it that it will take more then that and certain things have to be removed after installation :? Please can you clarify it .

Has someone made any list about how many things can be removed and what impact that has on the final size of Windows folder or is it that i have to adopt the method of trial and error. My hard drive is small, and i have several images of CDs on my hard drive which i really want to keep because...you know how small windows98SE was? It saved so much disk space. I hate Microsoft for closing its support on 98 .

Here is part of my Last Session, so that everyone interested could see what I remove.

Do not try to load it in nLite, because I deleted some parts (privacy heh ).

Just look on the components I removed.

This config on WinXP + SP2 +all hotfixes will result in ~150MB ISO (~2300files inside).

This config is by no means perfect for you, but it might help you
