my Win XP SP2 installation is not going through

it says "checking inventory" and then it checks the product code id & then throws up "internal error" "SP2 installation cant proceed"

someone please help me

I dont think its the problem with WGA as other updates happen without a problem.

If you don't get a reaction in 16 minutes after opening a topic, there's no reason to panic... Anyway: could you provide a little more information? Don't you get an error number or something like that? Your SP2 installation may be corrupted; have you tried another CD or downloaded the installation again?

well, i tried downloading the installable twice, but everytime i get the same error.

Looks like a function called "GetProductID" fails with error code 0x80004005, which usually means "unspecified error" (pretty useful error description, huh ) It might be caused by an antivirus program. Do you have one running? If yes, try unloading/disabling it during the SP2 installation.

Critical updates WILL install in illegal versions (versions with blacklisted keys) but SP2 will NOT.

If it was because of the product key, it probably will be straight. It probably would complain about the product key in the error message. Instead, you got a generic error, thus probably not product key-related.

A generic error probably means a corrupted Windows installation or a hardware malfunction.
