How can I remove startup sound from Vista RC-1?

Anyone been able to do this yet?

I think MS is going a little too far with this. There should definitely be an option to disable this sound. Maybe it can be removed using regedit or something?

Haven't tried it, but can't it be removed in the same way as on WinXP, through sound controls in Control Panel?

Right click on the sound icon in the taskbar.

Choose "Sounds"

Go down to either Windows Startup (The old WinXP Sound) and Windows Logon (The new Vista sound) and depending on which one you don't like, change it to "none".

No, I am not talking about about the .wav file assigned to "start windows" in control panel. I am talking about the (hard-coded??) sound (actually the sound played is windows xp startup.wav) that plays before you log in to windows. This is the first windows that has ever had this.

I see what you mean now! Maybe they'll let you do it once the sounds are finalised??

You're right though - if it is hardcoded, shame on you Microsoft!

There will be version for EU: Windows Vista NS (No Media Player and No Startup Sound).

Just kidding.

Startup sound is hardcoded for now.

I've never took the time to even consider disabling it. However, much like the previous version's you still the ability to disable it, hardcoded, maybe. Have you attempted to check the loader for a wav (or similar dat file) string ?
