Although I'm not sure whithout looking this is my file that 'm using

CLS
@echo off
ECHO Installing All Pre-SP2 Hotfixes...
ECHO Please Wait...
CD "%systemdrive%\install\Hotfixes
for %%i in (*.exe) do start /wait %%i -u -f -o -z -q -m

ECHO Done.
ECHO Installing All Pre-SP2 Cumulative patches...
ECHO Please Wait...
CD "%systemdrive%\install\Hotfixes2

ECHO Please Wait...
CD "%systemdrive%\install\Hotfixes3
for %%i in (*.exe) do start /wait %%i /Q /C:"dahotfix /q /n"
ECHO Done.
EXIT

Hotfixes includes the original ones that start with a q

hotfixes2 has the ones that are knowlidgebase fixes.

hotfixes3 are teh ones like ie6 cumulative patch and the javascript updatre. There are about 5 or 6 of these. You know them because the icon is colorfull

hotfix4 is the last mrupatch since it takes different switches than the others.

You have a few irrelevant ones there. What you should do is this: Get a machine where you can do a test install of XP SP1 *without any fixes*. Then go to the online WindowsUpdate and make note of the patch numbers. It only shows those that you need, not old patches that were replaced by new patches.

Also: Install them in alphabetical order. Right now you have a big mess there, it's not sorted. General rule: Install like Explorer sorts it. First Q3......, then Q8......, then KB......

Hehe, maybe if you're not connected to the internet.. :)

ECHO Installing Q815411: Help Algorithm Update for atypically large Heap Requests...
Hmm...
This fix in the Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows Server 2003 heap algorithm was released to better handle a particular atypical and uncommon sequence of heap requests by a private, internally developed program that is not commercially available. This program allocated and freed large chunks from the heap tens of thousands of times. The original scope and the size of the improvement for the particular program were mistakenly overstated in a prior version of this article based on an internal test application designed to reproduce the symptom, and is not relevant for any known programs or overall system performance. Typical Windows operation and common business, home, gaming and Internet programs will not be affected by this fix. It is not recommended that you use this fix except to address the specific program.

only the hardware/software hotfixes apply for myself..

it depends entirely on your own end use for the OS and how diligent you are

the security hotfixes are by and large issued to the users least likely to maintain their own ipsec and firewall settings for themselves

if you have a knowledge of how to set your own security..those hotfixes can hold till a rollup comes along

I guess my problem is I see no reason to waste my time with a windows firewall that my be compromised due to lack of any decent amount of any real security in the os to begin with. All my stuff sits behind my linux firewall. Not only that but the linux firewall was a snap to set up. I have done the same thing for other small business in my area. It works quite well and they dont have disruptions like a few weeks ago. For them it's all business as usuall while everybody else is struggeling to get thier systems back up.

As for the hot fixes it is still a good policy for any admin to aply them internaly or you could be just like microsoft and hewlet packard themselves who got allot of system infected by sqlslammer.

I good firewall on a windows box is an oxymorron.
