Thunderbolt 2864 Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 Hi,I have two computers. I have an onboard LAN and I can't connect to the internet, and it used to work. When I connect the RJ45 connector into the LAN, it detects a connection but cannot grant me an IP. I decided to reinstall Windows and still nothing. Its not my modem, I used the same modem and cable and it worked on the other computer. Is this a hardware issue then? Your help is greatly appreciated, thanks.
ripken204 Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 whats your interent setup outside of you computer?is it just modem->computer or is it modem->router->computerand did you install the drivers for your lan port?
Thunderbolt 2864 Posted August 15, 2006 Author Posted August 15, 2006 I have a cable internet connection. I don't have a router, the internet works fine on my other computer, except this one.Modem>ComputerYes I installed the LAN drivers and it still didn't work. Its really weird, and its really annoying me that I can't get any network connection. I also have another PCI Networking card and that doesn't work with the internet as well. I tried creating a network between two computers and it didn't work.
uid0 Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 Some ISPs lock the cable modem so it will only talk to one mac address within a timeframe - could try spoofing the mac of the second nic to match the one that worked

puntoMX Posted August 15, 2006 Posted August 15, 2006 Indeed, reset that modem. Power off for some time (could take up to 2 hours!) or try to reset that modem with the reset button on it (most of the time a little hole).
Thunderbolt 2864 Posted August 16, 2006 Author Posted August 16, 2006 Thanks for the help guys, I managed to connect to the internet again. Thanks again.Oh, my modem is a Motorola SB5100. I don't think it has a router in it. I managed to network my computer with it, funny why it didn't work the first time.
puntoMX Posted August 16, 2006 Posted August 16, 2006 Motorola SB5100 is just a modem, no router, you could buy a router to protect your system a bit with "discard ping from WAN" or for example a D-Link DSD-150 Internet Security Adapter.
