Hi,

I have two computers. I have an onboard LAN and I can't connect to the internet, and it used to work. When I connect the RJ45 connector into the LAN, it detects a connection but cannot grant me an IP. I decided to reinstall Windows and still nothing. Its not my modem, I used the same modem and cable and it worked on the other computer.

Is this a hardware issue then? Your help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

whats your interent setup outside of you computer?

is it just modem->computer

or is it modem->router->computer

and did you install the drivers for your lan port?

I have a cable internet connection. I don't have a router, the internet works fine on my other computer, except this one.

Modem>Computer

Yes I installed the LAN drivers and it still didn't work.

Its really weird, and its really annoying me that I can't get any network connection. I also have another PCI Networking card and that doesn't work with the internet as well. I tried creating a network between two computers and it didn't work.

Some ISPs lock the cable modem so it will only talk to one mac address within a timeframe - could try spoofing the mac of the second nic to match the one that worked

ya. afaik modems will only allow 1 comp hooked up to it. this is unless the modem has a router built into it? what make/model is the router and what connections are coming off the back of it?

Indeed, reset that modem. Power off for some time (could take up to 2 hours!) or try to reset that modem with the reset button on it (most of the time a little hole).

Thanks for the help guys, I managed to connect to the internet again. Thanks again.

Oh, my modem is a Motorola SB5100. I don't think it has a router in it. I managed to network my computer with it, funny why it didn't work the first time.
