well I live in Bahrain (Gulf) and there is only 1 ISP, week before they were offering unlimted package for home users which is very common in the world our ISP r Charging 106 USD dollar which is 40 B.D (Bharaini Dinar) Yeah i know it expensive but cannot do nothing , and the speed with 512/kbps

nevertheless they have stop offering it and giving a limit of 15 GB if we DOWNLOAD more than this they will charge according to there system. Now i have 8 people on my Network what can i do from which i can see how many bandwith is downloaded by my network so i can manage from been safe by overpaying.

we r still protesting this agenda by out ISP and Launched a Website { http://boycottbatelco.com } but i need few suggestions by You people that how i can know that this many GB is Downloaded by my Network.

i'm sure enterprise class routers have some kind of bandwidth monitoring, however I know of no consumer grade router that does that.

If I log into my webhost, I can tell how much bandwidth has been used by my account, so I'm sure it can be done at the server level, but I would have to assume all network traffic would have to pass through said server to be logged.

What kind of device(s) is/are between the ISP and those 8 users? A router and/or modem of some sort? Tell us what is there and maybe we can cook something up

yes i can tell you the structure we have 1 Speed Touch ADSL modem and build in rounter i have connected the modem with a switch through Cat 5e Wire and from it i have distributed the internet to my 8 users

So your modem/router is one of these? Which one?

Not that any of them are likely to have the feature you want. Are you willing to buy another router? Or can you setup a machine to act as one?

What kind of clients are on the network? Win2k? Linux?

You would need a supported device but it sounds like you could use one anyway

well you certainly gave the discussion a turning point with , you really gave it a new way and thanx 4 the link i try to learn them but i wanna ask is there any software from which i can monitor the bandwith use my my users in my Local Network so i can figure at out the user who is having Heavy use of internet and the limit going more than 16 GB.

Ooooo....you want to measure each user's bandwidth usage? That is harder for windows machines! The options above give you a "total usage" number but not by user.

Is your network an Active Directory domain? Or just a bunch of clients sharing a router?

Another option is a smart switch that can report port usage. My Cisco 2950 has detailed usage reports per port. But most consumer-grade switches are dumber.
