Mini123 Posted April 30, 2006 Posted April 30, 2006 (edited) When you hide a file in windows xp you can go to folder options and show hidden files and folders this way you can then open them files, is there a way to make them hidden so that even doing the folder options way you cant see themCheers Edited April 30, 2006 by Mini123

LLXX Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 Yeah basically i have an online portfolio of my work as pdf i want the user to view the document but not see it and not save their own copyCan't be done. To view it you need to be able to read it, and if you can read the file then you can copy it...
Mini123 Posted May 1, 2006 Author Posted May 1, 2006 Ok what about software that will blank out the save a copy button or save as in Adobe Reader?
Mini123 Posted May 2, 2006 Author Posted May 2, 2006 They would still be able to copy it...Can the save as button and the save a copy button be removed though through 3rd party software?
meyava Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Sound like the permissions are hosed.Try this:If you haven't already done it turn off "Use Simple file sharing"To do this open my computer, select tools menu, folder options. All the way at the bottom of the list on the Views tab under advanced settings is a check box to "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" remove the checkmark and click OK to close the Folder Options window. Now right click on the drive/folder with the problem. (If you select the drive you can reset permissions for all files/folders contain on it and start over.)Select Properties and then select the Security Tab.Click the Advanced button.Select the Owner tab.Select your preferred user name or group, and place a check in the box for "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects"Click OKand wait it takes about 5-10 minutes dependingupon the size of your drive and how much stuff you have on it.If it comes up with a security warning click yes to replace permissions.Generally speaking, this will do the work. if not, maybe some application lock the folder, you can del it after rebooting ur pc
Mini123 Posted May 2, 2006 Author Posted May 2, 2006 Ok,These files are to be sent off to an external person to be examined i have no idea of their setupAll of my work has to be in PDF i have software that can make the file invisable to windows even with view hidden files and folders option on so it cant be copied and pasted from the directory.I need to disable the button in adobe free version that says Save a copy and in file save as those are the only two i need to be disabled.Hope that clears up any confusions

I definitely wouldn't be.I need to disable the button in adobe free version that says Save a copy and in file save as those are the only two i need to be disabled. You can disable it on your own copy of the reader, but who knows what software the other person is using to view the PDFs?Summary: If you give someone else your file, they will be able to copy it and you are helpless in that situation.
Scubar Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 if you want to allow ppl to view your pdf then there is no way you can stop them from saving a copy.
Mini123 Posted May 3, 2006 Author Posted May 3, 2006 Thanks for your help.I will keep an open mind for software
dneigler Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 If you want to post it online, try FileOpen (http://www.fileopen.com). They have a plugin for acrobat that can help with disabling "Save a Copy" functionality.

In fact, I'd rather just use Windows Explorer or even the command prompt to get a copy of the PDF itself.
