[LAN] Block Windows Live Messenger

I want to stop WLM from being able to connect.

Is there anything I can add to the computers HOSTS file or in the routers Settings?

You could always create a block rule in Windows Firewall (or most any other firewall product) to block the .exe file itself. If you're in an Active Directory environment, you may be able to use Group Policy to disable it. I know it works for Windows Messenger, so it may work for WLM as well. Microsoft seems to tie the two programs together for certain things and this may be one of them.

Not quite a solution.

If the user gets smart and renames the file, he can connect.

The Wikipedia article on this has a handy little guide for blocking domains. Just follow the instructions under Ad filtering and use the domain you want to block.
