I just got a new computer and am having problems when I did not have a problem on my previous computer

that also used XP.

When I go into sidewinder central everything works except when I try to go into the recorder tab and I get the following error message RUN DLL AN EXCEPTION OCCURRED WHILE TRYING TO RUN "shell32.dll, Control_ RunDLL joy.cpl"

I hope someone can help with this problem. Thanks :}

To All: I have done some searching and found that the problem I am having is with control panel and specifically the joy.cpl file. I can open joystick properties with the command however this does not effect my problem. I still get the same error. Everything works but the recorder tab. In effect I cannot assign keyboard strokes to the joystick.

I also have a logitech joystick and I can use this, but I prefer the microsoft precision2. This is so weird...all works but the recorder tab.

Jeremy: I do have a file called jpicpl32. But no Joy.cpl.

Well, it seems that somehow your joy.cpl got removed. Do you have your XPCD? If so, search it for the file in the I386 folder, copy it to the root of your harddrive, go to Start > Run > cmd

Use the CD.. command to make your way to the C root, then type "expand joy.cp_ C:\WINDOWS\system32\joy.cpl

I hope this fixes your problem.

Jeremy: I am not sure how to copythe file to my root hard drive. I did copy it to the system32 folder which is probably wrong. Could you give me more specific instructions on how to copy it to the hard drive.

when I tried the command in dos you asked me to put in does did not enter it because it said there was no destination.

Well, it has the .cp_ file extension so it won't work yet. Take the file and put it on your main C:\ drive in Windows Explorer, so it's not in a folder.

Start > Run > cmd

Make your way to your XPCD (ie, D:\, E:\, whatever the drive letter is)

Now without quotations, type "expand X:\I386\joy.cp_ C:\WINDOWS\system32\joy.cpl"

X representing whatever the drive letter is.

How's that?

Jeremy:

I put the file joy.cpl in the C:\root directory as you specified.

My cd drive where the disk is located is E:\

the then put cmd in Run and in dos I wrote the following:

C:\expandE:\I386\Joy.cp_C:\WINDOWS\system32\joy.cpl

Dos then game me the following message:

The filename directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect.

Sorry for this headache I am giving you :}

If you're expanding directly from your CD, you don't need to copy it to your C drive. Forget I mentioned that.

C:\expandE:\I386\Joy.cp_C:\WINDOWS\system32\joy.cpl
is wrong.
Now without quotations, type "expand E:\I386\joy.cp_ C:\WINDOWS\system32\joy.cpl"

Follow that exactly.

There is a space between "cp_" and "C", incase you don't realize.

Jeremy: I get the same error message.

I checked the xpdisk again and could not find joy.cpl. the file that is there is cp_ which is the same file on the root drive. Did I do something to change it into cp_??. The cpl extension is gone.

P.S. I retried it with a space between cp_ and C:\...get the same message.

The file on your XPCD is .cp_. And your CD/DVD-ROM drive letter is E:, so...

When you get into the Command Prompt, type "E:" and then use the "expand E:\I386\joy.cp_ C:\WINDOWS\system32\joy.cpl" command.

Jeremy: It finally transferred to read:

C:\joycp_:26810 bytes to 68608 bytes, 155% increase.

I tried opening the recorder, but still got the exception message.

I do appreciate your help, but this looks like a loser. What do you think?
