I scan for viruses and spyware and ad aware atleast once a week or so(as long as i dont forget). Also there are always at lease 40+ things running in Windows Task Manager Processes and im not shure witch ones i can stop from comming on at bootup. LLXX
Run HiJackThis and post its log. Much easier to read than a screenshot of the task manager. There is also a program by Microsoft called BootVis that can show the time it takes for various components to initialise during the boot process. cluberti
What happens if you boot without a network card plugged in?Also, if you download autoruns (from www.sysinternals.com) and disable all non-Microsoft items, does the slow boot problem persist?Slow boot problems are actually caused by drivers not coming online fast enough, or services either not responding to Service Control Manager requests in a timely fashion or dependancy issues (where one service others are depending on starts up very slowly, causing the rest to start slowly). Subcodec
This may be a little biased, but looking at the list of services, many of them are from Symantec. Norton/Symantec antivirus is a huge resource hog. In the many computers I've seen this on, all are slow on booting and regular use. I don't run an anitvirus myself, but if you check out this thread, you can find a lot of advice and alternatives. This is just my 2 cents. Your boot time may also be affected by driver loading and/or other programs starting during boot.
DonDamm
You took the words out of my mouth! lol My first thought was "Norton". If you insist on Symantec stuff, at least use the corporate client. It seems to be very light on its feet and doesn't cause so many problems. Here's a hint if you really want to speed things up: Use Hibernate. Really, it works great and you'll be up and working in 30 seconds. Try it out. It just copies your RAM contents to a file and replaces it on startup instead of loading all the drivers from scratch. I use it here on my Server 2003 which normally takes a few minutes to start from scratch because of 'the large number of services I have on it. cookiemonster[MoA]
I know Norton uses alot of resorces. But my main problum is that the computer will work fine for a few mounth and then it starts acting up with no majer changes to the system.
ripken204
just disable norton from starting up and you'll see the difference
compster
I'd agree that Norton/Symantec can be brutal loading on startup.There are alos some programs starting that you don't really need started until you need them.O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Acrobat\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dllO2 - BHO: AcroIEToolbarHelper Class - {AE7CD045-E861-484f-8273-0445EE161910} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Acrobat\AcroIEFavClient.dllO3 - Toolbar: Adobe PDF - {47833539-D0C5-4125-9FA8-0819E2EAAC93} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Acrobat\AcroIEFavClient.dllO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [symantec NetDriver Monitor]C:\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SNDMon.exe /ConsumerO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Mirabilis ICQ] C:\Program Files\ICQ\NDetect.exeO4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottimeO4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Norton SystemWorks] "C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\cfgwiz.exe" /GUID {05858CFD-5CC4-4ceb-AAAF-CF00BF39736A} /MODE CfgWizO4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [iCQ] C:\Program Files\ICQ\ICQ.exe -traybootO4 - Global Startup: Acrobat Assistant.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Distillr\acrotray.exeO8 - Extra context menu item: E&xport to Microsoft Excel - res://C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\OFFICE11\EXCEL.EXE/3000O9 - Extra button: ICQ Pro - {6224f700-cba3-4071-b251-47cb894244cd} - C:\Program Files\ICQ\ICQ.exeO9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: ICQ - {6224f700-cba3-4071-b251-47cb894244cd} - C:\Program Files\ICQ\ICQ.exeO9 - Extra button: Research - {92780B25-18CC-41C8-B9BE-3C9C571A8263} - C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~2\OFFICE11\REFIEBAR.DLLO9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exeO9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe Edited February 27, 2006 by compster
