I installed the "un-official Windows 98SE service Pack 2a" and am not happy with the new splash screen! I un-installed the entire service pack with the "add-remove programs" feature in the Windows 98SE control panel but the Splash Screen that I do not like is still there. I would like a Spalsh Screen that announces 98SE but this one is not acceptable to me. I went to the Microsoft web site and downloaded all the recommended upgrades but the "un-official" splash screen is still there.

Anyone have directions how to either get the original splash screen back, or get and install a better, new one?

I'm not happy with the quality or content of the graphics. This is on a PII, 400Mhz computer

find any instance of logo.sys and delete it.

for a diffrent one try here or search this forum for 'logo' or 'logos' and you'll turn up plenty.

uninstalling the pack because of this is overkill

USP2 contains far more updates than the ones MS offers for download,

it's worth sticking with.

Thank you for your replies! I found just the opening logo that I needed. I also found the directions to remove the one I was unhappy with and install the new one. :)

I just downloaded and unzipped all the zips from the link MDGx provided above...

Now, how do I pick and use one?...Just the titles of some of them have me intrigued!

Thanks for the help in advance,

I liked that old unofficial 98SE service pack boot logo much better. I think the new one is really ugly. The old one looked just like the normal 98 splash screen but with "second edition" added below.

The only other one I think is half decent is the one that looks like the XP boot screen with the black background. I think MDGx has it in his boot logo pack.

I am not much a specialist in that but I think you can simply rename the one you like as logo.sys and dump it in the windows directory.

There are some logo managers as well. Desktop Architect for example (free) but also others. I think some are listed on MDGx's page.

Instructions on how to install/create/edit/manage boot logos [LOGO.SYS/LOGOW.SYS/LOGOS.SYS] in Win9x/ME are included in the text file 95LOGOS.TXT [sections C. and D.] which is part of the 95LOGOS.ZIP [1 MB]:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/95LOGOS.ZIP

95LOGOS.TXT [15 KB]:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/95LOGOS.TXT

95LOGOS.TXT also lists all logos from 95LOGOS.ZIP and brief info about each of them.

BTW:

XrX Logo screen saver [no nag shareware] also displays C:\LOGO.SYS, even animated ones:

Hope this helps.

Thanks, MDGx, but those instructions seem a little daunting to me :blink:

I found the file Logo.sys on my PC under C:\...can't I just delete (or move) that file, rename one of the splash screens you provided above in the link to "Logo.sys" (no quotes), and "park" it under C:\ ??...

Then, when Windows starts, it would look for the logo.sys file that is there, and use it?

This is probably too simple to work, but wanted to ask before I try your linked suggestion...

Thanks for the help!

All you need to do is copy LOGO.SYS to C:\ root, which sounds very simple indeed, but:

- on some computers LOGO.SYS has read-only, system and/or hidden attributes, in which case 1 needs to change its attributes to "archive", in order for the replacement/custom logo to be successfully copied to C:\ root;

- some people still use DrvSpace hard disk compression, in which case LOGO.SYS must be copied also to H:\ root;

- on some computers MSDOS.SYS and/or WINBOOT.INI [if any] may not have the "Logo=1" line;

- some people don't know anything about DOS commands, file attributes, file renaming operations etc.

So you see, I need to cover all these [and other] situations, to make sure all this works properly on all 9x computers.

That's why the instructions in 95LOGOS.TXT may seem "daunting" to some people. ;)

Hope this helps.
