Maleko Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Ok, as you know im lookin at setting up a RAID0 array...now i was just reading up on it, and when you manually configure the RAID array you can choose the Chunk size, ive heard you have a smaller chunk size for server applications? So shoudl i manually config it, or auto config, if i manually do it, what chunk size is best really?I can imagine there may be a few different views on this.Obviously the chunks are either:2,4,8,16,32,64,128Now ill be playing games on it, and using video editing and photo editing programs...
big poppa pump Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Setting a cluster size different from the stripe size would be totally retarded and it basically negates the point of having raid 0. Your stripe size always has to equal your cluster size. It also comes down to what you are going to use your raid partition for. For audio/video editing where you use fairly large files go with the highest stripe/cluster size. For day to day applicaitons where you tend to use smaller files go with either a 16k/16k or a 32k/32k partition.
ripken204 Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 why does it have to be equal? most people dont set them equal. the defualt ntfs cluster size is 4kb and most people just leave that alone. u could also try 64/16 . a 4:1 ratio for stripe:cluster has proven to be the bests performers.
big poppa pump Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 The reason most people leave it alone is because its a royal PITA to install an OS on a 16/16 unless you already have an existing OS on your system. And please show where it mentions a 4:1 stripe/cluster betters a 16k/16k or a 32/32k.
Maleko Posted February 22, 2006 Author Posted February 22, 2006 wo wo, hang on....Chunks...now i know clusters are on a hard disk, im askign about chunks, can you explain what the ratios are?
ripken204 Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 take a look at the dfi forums, they have a quite extensive post on raid0 and many other poststhe 4:1 ratio is just stripe:clustersay u want a 64 stripe, then you should have a 16 cluster
big poppa pump Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 DFI forums dont prove crap. The only thing that goes on over there is basically comparing one's e-d**k to another.
ripken204 Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 well i see that you are proving yourself. http://www.dfi-street.com/forum/showthread...ght=raid+stripethis is that thread i was talking about. you will see many benchmarks in here. now until u can prove your side of the arguement, stop badmouthing people.btw, read point 2 in the 1st post
big poppa pump Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 I don't give a hoot about benchmarks. Show me where it proves that a 4:1 ratio gives a performance boost in real time applications.
ripken204 Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 benchmarks is the only thing to really prove that things are faster, unless u wanted to sit there with a stopwatch.
Maleko Posted February 23, 2006 Author Posted February 23, 2006 ok, thnks ripken, will look at the hard drives wen i get them, will look at a 4:1 ratio
