cumminbk Posted February 4, 2006 Share Posted February 4, 2006 now i wonder if someone could help explain the advantanges of the more memory. it seems there are lower end cards with 256 memory which are still poorer performers than newer 128mb cards. is there a way to know when a older card with more memory may be better than a newer card with less? how exatly is video card memory used anyway? visuals are just loaded faster? please explain. spazmire11 Posted February 4, 2006 Share Posted February 4, 2006 the more memory in most cases is just a marketing scam.unless you are playing games at high resolutions, with lots of textures it will not help.even then the frame rate will still be poor because of lack of gpu power since its a low end card.128mb cards are great for the average gamer.now, if the 256mb card and the 128mb card cost the same or withing 5$ go with the 256 it has some preformance increase Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

teqguy Posted February 4, 2006 Share Posted February 4, 2006 While it's always nice to have more memory to play with, the fact of the matter is that current software simply doesn't take advantage of it... as is the case with high bandwidth interfaces, high bandwidth memory, dual core processors, and the extended 64bit instruction set.Even with the case of high end games, the average video memory usage is about 40-90MB, as textures are temporarily cached and then flushed. teqguy Posted February 6, 2006 Share Posted February 6, 2006 (edited) If you have a motherboard that supports PCIe, I would go for the 7800GT instead. Two 6600GTs in SLi can't compete with the performance of a 7800 unless you have software that actually supports SLi... and even then, the graphical quality of the 7800 is unmatched.Furthermore, SLi is one of the most unnecessary technologies to date, and by supporting it, you're supporting moving PC gaming entirely into the niche market, where only people who spend $2000+ on a computer can afford to play.
