Blurring Problem with display when I run a Program

My OS is Windows XP Home Edition. Dell Dimension, desktop, one year old.

When I run a program called Photofinish (which enhances photographs) the screen goes black for four seconds, then it returns, but the quality and definition of the colours and images is blurred. This is a recent problem when I try to run this program. What could be wrong? How can I correct it? (I have disabled all the startup programs - msconfig - but the problem remains.) I have changed the display settings, but this makes no difference. The problem remains.

this sounds like a software problem. sounds like the software is loading its own display driver, especially sine you mention that the display goes black for a short time. this sounds fishy to me and i would suspect that application may be sub-par. you may want to find something else and if you need any input on good free or non-free graphics editing applications, say so.

Are you using a CRT or an LCD monitor? LCDs are particularly sensitive to changes in resolution, as they were designed to only display one fixed resolution. Running them at any other resolution causes sub-optimal display.
