XP SP2: KB894391 superseded by KB902400?

On 32-bit XP SP2, KB894391 provides version 5.1.2600.2665 of:

ole32.dll, olecli32.dll, olecnv32.dll, rpcss.dll

according to the MS KB article: KB894391

But KB902400 provides version 5.1.2600.2726 of those files (plus a lot of other files): MS05-051

So that would make 894391 obsolete ... right?

Could someone please double-check this? and if I'm correct, Tomcat76, could you remove 894391 from your XP hotfixes list?

Thanks again guys.

You're right: the same files are being updated. All files are newer in the KB902400 update except for Rpcrt4.dll which stays the same.

Note to TommyP...

MS add this important note:

"When you install these security updates, the installer checks to see if one or more of the files that are being updated on your system have previously been updated by a Microsoft hotfix.

If you have previously installed a hotfix to update one of these files, the installer copies the RTMQFE, SP1QFE, or SP2QFE files to your system. Otherwise, the installer copies the RTMGDR, SP1GDR, or SP2GDR files to your system."

This basically says that HFSLIP should install the GDR versions when not including KB894391 (and any other hotfix that also updates these files). Is there an easy way for HFSLIP to determine this?

The order of preference of the updates...... I had to read between the lines (with FDV's guidance) on this.

1. GDR

2. QFE

In other words, if a hotfix has a GDR and QFE, the GDR will get copied over. If the the hotfix has a QFE only, then the QFE gets copied over. But to answer your Q, the GDR is copied over. There is nothing to worry about HFSLIPwise.

On a plain (non-HFSLIP'd) XP SP2 install: no, Windows Update does not recommend KB894391.

I haven't tried it with HFSLIP yet. But I will try to find time to do that today.

Win2K-hfslipped doesn't need KB894391 when KB902400 is included so I assume it's the same for XPSP1 and XPSP2. I'll update the lists.

Edit: Done.
