Turns out I have two machines from the same install CD.

I can no longer get updates from Microsoft for one of the machines as of this month.

The "Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)" always fails.

I would like to re-install a different CD W2KPRO to to one of the machines,

only to give it a new product ID and CD key. Thinking this will fix the problem,

I go out and buy a new retail W2KPRO CD. But instead of re-installing can I just

enter the new numbers in the registry of the currently installed OS?

If I do reinstall from the CD, is there a way to re-install with the new CD key, and not

change any other system settings, patches and installed programs? Or is it time to just

back-up, reformat and do fresh install with new CD?

You can reintall win2k, and setup will detect the already installed os, it will keep all your program & settings & drivers ... but all system file are restored so you must repatch all windows ... during the setup, the new key will ask you too.

Goodbye.

You can get a keyfinder/changer called "Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder" here -- http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

This finds your origanal key and then you go to " Options > Change Windows Key " Type in your new key and this will tell you if it is compatable with the version of windows you are running.

Hope this helps
