I encounter this problem each time I use my computer:

When I boot my computer or let it sit idle for a while my network dies.

When I open the task manager I see two identical svchost.exe processes, both from "NETWORK SERVICE":

When I kill the top instance of svchost.exe it restores my network.

What is causing this issue, and how do I fix it?

I am running XP with SP2

I have a 1.7GHz mobile P4 (centrino) in an IBM T42

1.25 GB RAM

What exactly do you mean that your network "dies"?

Just a note... you probably don't want to be ending any task named "svchost", unless it's using 99% of your CPU (in which case it's most likely a virus).

if you are losing network and this fixes it, its most likely a sofisticated virus.

id try re-installing windows.

but first, make sure you goto control panel, sysem, device manager, then check to see if your network connection is told to go into sleep mode, when idle

sometimes with certain hardware, it get stucks that way.

the actual svchost.exe is a microsoft file, use Process Explorer to check and validate the svchost.exe is located in: C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe

if its in any other place then that, its more then likely a virus, in which case i would recomend getting Avast! Antivirus Which is completly free. and if that doesn't detect anything, download and run Hijackthis and post your log in the Malware Forum It wouldn't hurt to do a scan with Adaware SE 1.06 and clean out anything found in there before posting your hijackthis log in the Malware forum.

This is not a virus, it was the sleep mode problem described by gdogg.
