Need upgrade advice for my Athlon64 system

Hi, I have this PC:

MSI K8T Neo Fis2R (MS-6702)

Athlon64 3400+ (socket 754, 2.4 GHz 512 KB cache - NewCastle?)

NVIDIA GeForce 5900 Ultra 256 MB (AGP 8x)

2 x 512 MB RAM DDR400 (generic brand, 8-3-3-3 or something)

I recently got a ATI X1800 256 MB, but I can't use it yet since it's PCIx.

Should I get a mobo with 754 and PCIx? This would probably only cost $70.

Or should I dump the CPU and mobo (and memory?) and get a 939 socket CPU?

My CPU seems a bit slow trying to run games like Morrowind (this game really drains your

CPU power), but even the fastest CPU's aren't much faster than mine, I think. So for a $70

socket-754 mobo I might get by for another year or so..

Thanks!

I always go the max upgrade route...so you should get an all new cpu/mobo...get the venice core preferably. IT will be socket 939. And also try to get better ram or at least try to tighten the timings. If you get a mobo get a DFI or Asus. You wont regret it. You can using stock cooling get a considerable speed jump with the new Venice core. Hope that helps.

venice 3000/3200

But the CPU I'm using right now is socket 754 Athlon 3400.

So you are suggesting I get a new motherboard (socket 939) and then get a slower processor? Seems a bit odd.

Thanks guys, I think I will either sell the ATI X1800 or will wait a few months and then upgrade everything else.

Ripken assumes that everyone will overclock, that's why he recommended that CPU.

My opinion is to hang on to the Radeon and wait until next year for AMD's new Socket M2 interface to come out. It will use DDR2 RAM and obviously a 1002 CPU pin configuration. It's going to replace socket 939 so I would advise you to hang on to get the most out of your money.
