vickerps Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 HiHaving a problem with window XP sp2 When i try to open a file e.g (text file) windows XP takes about 30 seconds to opening the file. Also if i try to right click on any file the contents menu also take about 30 second to appear. The problem only seem to be with files; folders opening normally and if i right click on my computer or network places for example the contents menu come back straight away.I have install microsoft antispyware on and the latest dat of mcaffe on to see if there where and viruses, trojans or spyware on my system but all results came back clean. However this machine doesn't have any internet access anyway so i expect there to none.anyone got any ideas
DL. Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 Are there lots of application installed items in the right-click menu?
garnet Posted October 14, 2005 Posted October 14, 2005 Is the machine sluggish even otherwise, if so try running a disk cleanup, remove the temporary files, recycle bin files etc and then try running chkdsk and disk defragmenter. Possbly ur system is loaded with junk/drive cluttered.
Rhelic Posted October 14, 2005 Posted October 14, 2005 The only reasons I can think of that would cause this slowndown (which have been said above):1. Many apps that have added themself to your right click menu2. Spyware3. Something else that is using your HD heavily (this excludes Google or Microsoft desktop search as they only use the HD when it PC is idle)Of course if it's 2 or 3 then you should get slowdowns in other places.
Nex6 Posted October 14, 2005 Posted October 14, 2005 couple of points:1: log on as another user and see if the same thing happens (freshly created)2: how much ram and cpu is being used vs what is available3: run ad aware, and run a Virus checker.4: run chkdisk and defrag5: try it in safemode what happens?-Nex6
