RSS uses?

Hey everyone, I am new to rss. I've seen the icons on certain sites. I am wondering what kind of uses it has. I've ran across the below topics regarding the best software for rss and about google's rss. Is rss for news sites only? Please someone knowledgeable of rss explain it briefly, so I can maybe start using this technology. Thanks in advance

RSS and Atom files provide news updates from a website in a simple form for your computer. You read these files in a program called an aggregator, which collects news from various websites and provides it to you in a simple form

for example.. checking the news on msfn without having to visit the site, so i can see if anything new has been posted, and if it has go direct to that news article/forum post etc.
