When you upgrade from XP home to XP SP1,it puts a backup folder on your computer, does anyone know where it is and whats its called,I would like to delete it, to make more room on my harddrive and is it safe to get rid of it?

yes, if you are sure that you don't want to un-install the SP1 update, you can delete it, I did it about a month ago.. no problems.. if you want to remove it from the Add/Remove Programs list you need to do some registry changes. but this is not neccesary..

C:\Windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$ should be the folder you can delete, I think it's about 300mb big, all the other SP1 update folders should be keps in tact.. also if this folder doesn't show up you will need to enable the hidden/system file attributes for folder browsing.. and to get rid of the SP1 uninstall info under the Add/Remove Programs section you will have to change the following setting in your registry...

1.Start the registry editor by going to Start > Run > type "regedit" (without the quotes, duh')

2.navigate to the folder : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and delete the uninstall folder...

3.Reboot and check if the SP1 uninstall part was removed...

Gamehead, in your case, either you have some dual boot setup, you might have changed the backup files path, or you didn't have enough space on you windows partition, and the installation set it on a seperate partition that did have enough space...

These are the folders that are being created when you install SP1 update...

- %systemroot%\Servicepackfiles (these are most of the installation files neccesary and can not in any way be deleted)

- %systemroot%\$NtServicePackUninstall$ (this can be safely removed if you are sure that you won't have to uninstall SP1 at any time)

- Random numbers, up to 20 characters, like 9650eb12e8b4d3547657, on the root of the volume that had the most free space. Those folers with large numbers should been deleted after you finished installing it, if not you can safely delete them..

I have done this a month ago, and I can guarantee you that it won't do any harm if you delete it..

Also keep in mind in the future if you reinstall Windows while installing SP1 you can choose to achive files...click "do not archive files" and you wont have to do this next time.
