Mamoun Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 HiiWhere is the definitions of the drivers ( when you install a new device you had the types of the latest devices, genius, hp...etc, )folder? or it's not stored in a folder in win xp?
boooggy Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 what do u mean? where r backed up teh old drivers after u install new ones?u have to be more specific.....
InTheWayBoy Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 C:\Windows\INFI think that might be what you are talking about...any new hardware that didn't come with the default install will have a name of "oem??.inf"
Mamoun Posted August 12, 2005 Author Posted August 12, 2005 Thanks for the quick reply and sorry that I didn't explain the problem wellI newly installed windows xp on my computer, then when I plugged in a mouse, a USP mouse, it said found new hardware then it try to recognize it, but the definitions of the mouses ( types and companies list that I choose my mouse from ) is empty and it asked me to download the drivers (and this computer had no modem )so I want to know where is the devices information that I can copy it from the computer that had the networking, and put them in the other computeror may be you can suggest a download to make the mouse workthe mouse is not manufactured by a popular company, so it's harder to make it work ( but it worked on the computer that had the networking )
Mamoun Posted August 12, 2005 Author Posted August 12, 2005 C:\Windows\INFI think that might be what you are talking about...any new hardware that didn't come with the default install will have a name of "oem??.inf"<{POST_SNAPBACK}>then I can copy the files in this folder and put it in the same directory in he other computer?sorry if it seems a stupid question
InTheWayBoy Posted August 12, 2005 Posted August 12, 2005 I don't know if that will work...because for ever inf file there are various support files that go with it...the inf is just the road map on how the device works with Windows. The bigger question is why it's asking you for mouse drivers...USB mice are generally supported right out the box, at least the basic features are. If it's just a regular mouse and you are getting that message, I would tend to think there is something wrong with your OS, like maybe it's missing some key system files. What mouse are you trying to install?
Mamoun Posted August 12, 2005 Author Posted August 12, 2005 (edited) Actually, you are right, I wounder why it asked me, the mouse that I'm trying to install is just too unpopular, but if you want really to know it's Jacktec.it ask for the windows CD too ( well, I can't get the CD, because I bought my computer with windows xp )So I can't find a solution I checked the inf folder in the both computers, the computer that the mouse didn't work on it had less files in the INF folderIs it safe to copy these files to the other computer? Edited August 12, 2005 by Mamoun
InTheWayBoy Posted August 13, 2005 Posted August 13, 2005 Well that also depends on hardware configs...while it's safe to copy files between the two, it's useless to copy over the files if they are for different hardware items...an nvidia driver does nothing for an ati video card. You could try a repair install, but you'll need the CD to do that...and one of the same type I believe. You shouldn't be asked for files though...notice how their website has no support link...that's cause all the products they sell are basic enough not to need any downloads. You might have lost so key system files somewhere, and I don't know of any easy way to determine what you're missing let alone how to replace it. You could try sfc /scannow and see what it reports, but all it will do is offer to replace certain files and again you would need the original CD to fix this.Although, if you might have the source files on either PC, depending on how it's setup. If you have C:\I386 then you most likely have a local copy of the source files...you could try making that into a bootable CD to accomplish the previously mentioned tasks. Just a thought...good luck!
Mamoun Posted August 13, 2005 Author Posted August 13, 2005 I'm now confused, Is the folder i386 for the installed devices? I tried searching in this folder for jacktec on my other computer that the mouse worked with it, and I didn't find it.
Mamoun Posted August 13, 2005 Author Posted August 13, 2005 It's fixed I did what you said to copy the C:\i386 into a CD, I found this folder in the computer that the mouse worked with it, then when the other computer asked to put Win XP CD to the CD drive to make the mouse work, I put the CD that contains the folder i386, and then the mouse workedYou are my hero thanks you very much InTheWayBoy And thanks boooggy for the replying too.I love this forum
InTheWayBoy Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 No Problem...to save you some future headache, I would copy the I386 folder to the computer that didn't have it, and then use something like this to make the OS know where to look for the files next time:http://www.theeldergeek.com/specify_source...ation_files.htmThat way in the future you hopefully won't run into this again.Good Luck!
Mamoun Posted August 16, 2005 Author Posted August 16, 2005 Thanks again InTheWayBoy for your great help
